Venturi Space’s Mona Luna is a proposed lunar rover, not a lander. The company’s June 2025 pitch outlined a modular rover that could be delivered by a future European lunar mission. Since then, Venturi has reported Earth-based driving tests at ESA’s LUNA centre and an ESA-funded technology risk-reduction study—but the available announcements do not confirm a lunar flight contract.
What Venturi Space is proposing
Venturi Space, a Monaco-based company, presented Mona Luna in June 2025 as a next-generation rover for European lunar exploration. The pitch described Europe as developing a potential delivery path using Ariane 6 and the Argonaut lander, while needing a rover to explore the surface. That was the proposal’s framing at the time, not confirmation that the full mission architecture had been approved. ExtremeTech’s June 19, 2025 report, republished by Yahoo Tech, covered the pitch.
The distinction matters: Mona Luna is the surface vehicle. A rocket and lander would be needed to transport it to the Moon and place it on the surface.
How the proposed rover is designed
Modular instruments and tools
The June 2025 design placed instruments near the rover’s centre, where the layout was intended to shield them from lunar temperature extremes. A rear panel opens to reveal modular sensors and tools, which a robotic arm can attach or detach. The design rationale is that one arm could serve multiple instruments, potentially reducing mass and complexity; the pitch does not establish that this approach has been demonstrated in lunar operations. Deformable wheels
Venturi’s wheel concept is intended to handle difficult terrain and a wide temperature range. ExtremeTech reported a target operating range of −240°C to 130°C in June 2025. That is a design claim reported by the publication, not an independently certified operating result.
Mass and speed figures from the 2025 report
ExtremeTech reported a rover weight of 1,650 pounds, rising to as much as 4,400 pounds with payloads. It also reported a speed of up to 9 mph, or up to 12 mph with lighter payloads. These figures describe the design as reported in June 2025; they should not be treated as a later, independently verified specification sheet.

What the later tests and ESA study show
Earth-based driving tests at ESA’s LUNA centre
On December 12, 2025, Venturi said Mona Luna had completed its first test campaign at ESA’s LUNA centre in Cologne. The company reported trials on loose soil, slopes and obstacles, and said the 750 kg rover, expandable to 1,000 kg, climbed and descended slopes of up to 33 degrees. These are company-reported terrestrial results, not lunar trials or proof of performance on the Moon. Venturi’s December 2025 announcement provides the test details.
ESA-funded technology risk reduction
Venturi announced on February 24, 2026 that an ESA contract for a technology risk-reduction study had begun on January 1, 2026. The study covers mobility, power supply and thermal regulation for future lunar rovers. Venturi says the work includes dedicated tests of wheel, battery, suspension and rover-egress technologies, using Mona Luna as a test platform. This establishes an active technology-development relationship; the announcement does not say ESA has awarded Mona Luna a delivery or flight contract. Could Mona Luna go to the Moon around 2030?
Venturi describes Mona Luna as under development and says it could be delivered by an Ariane 64 rocket and the Argonaut lander, with a possible mission to the lunar south pole around 2030. The date is a possibility, not a confirmed launch commitment. The company’s Mona Luna program page and space program overview present the rover and delivery concept in those conditional terms.
The evidence therefore places Mona Luna beyond a pitch alone: Venturi has reported terrestrial driving tests and an ESA-funded study of rover technologies. It does not establish a confirmed lunar mission, flight qualification or delivery date.
