The right choice depends on acceptable data loss, how quickly service must return, recovery verification needs, storage design and licensing. The guidance below reflects Veeam Backup & Replication build 13.1.1.18; supported features and entitlements can vary by edition and configuration.
How do Veeam backups, replication and CDP differ?
These approaches solve related but different recovery problems. A backup preserves recovery points for restoration; a replica is a synchronized copy that can be started on a target host; CDP captures VM changes for a seconds-level recovery-point objective (RPO), according to Veeam’s product guidance.
| Approach | What Veeam creates | Best fit in Veeam’s guidance | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Image-level backup | A block-level VM image backup, treated as a VM object | Restore options ranging from a whole VM to files or application items | Service restoration requires using the backup to recover data; no specific recovery-time guarantee is stated. |
| Replication | A VM copy in native VMware vSphere format on a target host, kept synchronized | Veeam recommends it when an RPO measured in hours is acceptable | The replica is ready to start, but actual recovery time depends on the design and environment. |
| Continuous data protection (CDP) | Near-instantaneous replication of VM changes | Veeam points to CDP when an RPO measured in seconds is needed | Feasibility and achieved objectives must be validated for the specific environment. |
The hour-level and seconds-level distinctions are Veeam’s planning guidance, not performance guarantees. Choose by the loss and outage your business can tolerate, then validate that infrastructure, network capacity and product configuration can meet those objectives. Veeam’s VMware vSphere overview and replication documentation describe these approaches.
How do I back up VMware vSphere VMs with Veeam?
Veeam documents image-level VM backups: it treats a virtual machine as an object rather than a collection of files and copies the VM image at block level. A backup can support recovery of the full VM, Instant Recovery, VM files, guest files and folders, and application items. Veeam’s backup guide for build 13.1.1.18 describes restoration from a compressed and deduplicated backup file as requiring time; it does not establish a particular recovery-time guarantee. Read Veeam’s VMware backup documentation.

Plan the backup around the recovery that matters, not just the act of creating a backup file. Decide which workloads require whole-VM recovery, which need individual files or application data, and what acceptable data loss and restoration time are. Also account for the repository that will hold backup data and the verification method available under your license.
What is the difference between Veeam backup and replication?
Backup: preserve recovery points
A backup is the option to use when you need recoverable points from which to restore a VM or selected data. Because the data must be restored from the backup, it is not the same as having a live, ready-to-start VM copy.

Replication: keep a target VM ready
Veeam replication creates a copy of a VM in native VMware vSphere format on a target host and keeps it synchronized. The first cycle creates the full replica; subsequent cycles transfer changed blocks. If the production VM fails, you can fail over to the replica. After repairing the source, you can fail back. Veeam recommends ordinary replication when an RPO measured in hours is acceptable. The replica supports low recovery time by being ready to start, but neither recovery time nor an achieved RPO is guaranteed independently of the deployment. Veeam’s replication guide covers the product workflow.
CDP: target seconds-level RPOs
Veeam describes CDP as near-instantaneous replication of VM changes and points to it when the required RPO is measured in seconds. That is a product-guidance distinction, not proof that a particular design will achieve seconds-level protection. Validate support, capacity and recovery behavior for the target environment before relying on it.

When should I use CDP for VMware?
Consider CDP for workloads where even an hour-level recovery point would mean too much lost data and a seconds-level RPO is the requirement. For less time-sensitive workloads, ordinary replication may match an hour-level RPO need; backups remain important for restoring from recovery points and for granular recovery.
Before selecting CDP, compare the workload’s criticality and acceptable data loss with available infrastructure and network capacity, the required recovery time, verification requirements, repository design and license entitlements. Veeam’s documentation gives directional guidance, not a substitute for testing whether the specific environment can support the objective.

How can I verify that Veeam backups are recoverable?
Creating a backup and verifying that it can be recovered are separate activities. Veeam names SureBackup and SureReplica as technologies for verifying backup and replica recoverability, but availability depends on the license. The documentation says Standard edition users can manually verify VM backups with Instant Recovery; this should not be read as inclusion of SureBackup or SureReplica in every edition. Confirm the entitlement that applies to your licensing route. See Veeam’s recovery verification overview.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does Veeam immutable backup storage work?
Immutability protects backup data from deletion until its configured expiration date. It is a repository capability, not a complete security or recovery strategy by itself. Veeam documents immutability for multiple repository types, including hardened repositories and object storage, but the mechanics and retention behavior depend on the selected storage technology and configuration.

For object storage, Veeam documents object lock and versioning for several listed services; for Azure Storage it documents version-level WORM and blob versioning. Do not assume these options behave identically across providers, or that enabling immutability alone guarantees that data can be recovered. Check the applicable repository requirements and configured retention. Veeam’s immutability documentation and object-storage immutability guide describe the supported approaches.
What can you restore from a Veeam VMware backup?
Recovery is not limited to restoring an entire virtual machine. Veeam’s VMware recovery documentation lists VM recovery, disk recovery and item recovery, including VM files, guest operating system files and folders, and application items. It also describes restoring to other environments. This granularity lets administrators match the recovery operation to the incident rather than restoring more than necessary. See Veeam’s VMware data recovery guide.
Veeam documents a version-direction constraint: backups made with earlier product versions can be restored with later versions, but backups made with later versions cannot be restored with earlier versions. Include product-version compatibility in recovery planning.
How should you choose a VMware protection design?
- Set the RPO: define the maximum acceptable data loss. Veeam’s guidance associates ordinary replication with an RPO measured in hours and CDP with one measured in seconds.
- Set the recovery-time objective: determine how quickly the workload must return to service. A ready-to-start replica can support low recovery time, while backup restoration takes time and has no universal duration established in the cited guidance.
- Match protection to workload criticality: not every VM requires the same RPO, recovery time or verification rigor.
- Check feasibility: confirm that infrastructure and network capacity can support the selected approach and validate actual recovery behavior.
- Choose the recovery scope: decide whether the likely need is a whole VM, disk, VM file, guest file or application item.
- Plan verification and storage: check license availability for SureBackup or SureReplica and select a repository and immutability configuration appropriate to retention and recovery needs.
The cited Veeam documentation applies to Backup & Replication build 13.1.1.18, but feature support and licensing can vary. Veeam Data Platform is described in a VCSP rental-licensing reference as including Veeam Backup & Replication, Veeam ONE and Veeam Recovery Orchestrator; that reference does not establish general customer pricing or entitlements for every purchasing route.
