Matthew Sigel’s $500,000 Bitcoin figure is a conditional valuation, not a promised price or a dated forecast: it follows from a scenario in which Bitcoin’s total market value reaches roughly half of gold’s. In a 2025 Morningstar interview, VanEck’s head of digital assets said that outcome could imply $500,000–$600,000 per Bitcoin by 2030, depending on gold’s price. The central question is whether Bitcoin gains enough monetary use to justify that share of gold’s value.
How the gold comparison produces a $500,000 Bitcoin figure
The framework compares the total market value of Bitcoin with the value of gold. If Bitcoin were worth about half as much as gold in aggregate, dividing that hypothetical Bitcoin market value by the number of coins gives an implied per-coin price. The $500,000 figure is therefore a translation of a relative market-size assumption—not a standalone forecast based on a particular trading pattern.
The conversion is sensitive to gold’s value. In the Morningstar interview, Sigel put the implied Bitcoin price at $500,000–$600,000, depending on gold’s price, if Bitcoin reaches half of gold’s market value by 2030. A change in gold’s value changes the implied Bitcoin price even if the assumed one-half ratio stays the same. The interview does not establish a single gold-price input that readers can use as a fixed conversion.
What adoption assumptions sit behind Sigel’s estimate?
Sigel’s gold comparison depends on Bitcoin being used more widely as money and as a reserve asset, rather than simply attracting more investment demand. In the Morningstar interview, he described a scenario in which Bitcoin accounts for 2% of central-bank reserves and 5%–10% of global trade. He contrasted the reserve assumption with gold’s stated 18% share.

These are Sigel’s assumptions, not consensus estimates or established outcomes. They describe possible sources of monetary demand that could support a larger Bitcoin market value; they do not show that central banks or businesses will adopt Bitcoin at those levels.

The targets should not be treated as a steadily updated forecast series: they have different dates and horizons, and the 2050 figure belongs to a distinct scenario exercise. VanEck says future performance is unknown in that report, so its modeled base case is not a promised outcome.

What could prevent Bitcoin from reaching half of gold’s value?
For the gold-relative thesis to work, Bitcoin would need to gain monetary usefulness as well as market value. VanEck’s 2024 scenario analysis emphasizes that scaling—the ability to support practical transaction use—is a key condition. It states: “If Bitcoin cannot become an important medium of exchange because adequate scaling is not completed, our core thesis for its meteoric rise will be broken.” This is VanEck’s statement in its 2024 scenario report, not a quote from Sigel’s later interview.

- Scaling and competition: failure to scale, competition from other cryptocurrencies, or a schism in Bitcoin’s community.
- Policy and government action: changes to monetary policy, government bans, or attacks.
- Concentration and security: ownership becoming concentrated in large financial entities, theft or hacking, and financial attacks.
These are risks VanEck discusses for its 2050 scenario, not a complete risk assessment. They matter to the nearer-term gold comparison because the adoption assumptions require Bitcoin to remain usable and attractive over time.

The exact figures and assumptions above come from the accessible Morningstar interview and VanEck publications. Taken together, they support a clear reading of the headline: $500,000 is a conditional outcome of a gold-relative market-size thesis, with substantial adoption and execution assumptions—not a guarantee that Bitcoin will reach that price by a certain date.
