How the 2026 Champions field is built
Champions Shanghai is the 2026 season-ending global event, featuring 16 teams across the four VCT territories: Americas, EMEA, Pacific and China. Riot’s 2026 handbook describes four entrants from each territory: the top two finishers in that territory’s Stage 2 playoffs and the two teams earning the most Championship Points.
How the group stage works
The 16 teams are divided into four GSL groups. Each group has one representative from each territory, and its matches are Bo3. The top two teams in each group advance, producing an eight-team playoff field. Riot’s event guide describes the elimination rule simply: “Lose two and you’re out.”
In practical terms, each team can absorb one group-stage loss but is eliminated after a second. Riot’s published pages identify the groups as GSL and state the advancement and elimination rules, but do not lay out every possible match sequence or state how a tied group record is resolved.

How the playoff bracket works
The eight group qualifiers enter a double-elimination bracket. A playoff team that loses once has a route through the lower bracket; its second loss ends its tournament. Playoff matches are Bo3 except for the lower final and grand final, which are Bo5.
Seeding, pairings and tiebreakers: what Riot has not specified
The official format information reviewed does not state the group draw procedure, how teams are seeded into the playoff bracket, which group finishers meet in the opening playoff rounds, or the criteria for breaking ties in the group stage. It therefore does not establish that group winners receive a bye or that any particular cross-group pairing applies. These details require an event-specific announcement from Riot rather than inference from the published format.
