Choose based on where a projector can sit in your room: an ultra-short-throw (UST) model sits close to the screen, while a long-throw model needs a position farther back. Measure the room and check the specific projector’s distance chart for your target image size before deciding; the category label alone does not tell you whether a model will fit.
How to choose between UST and long throw
Start with the space between the screen and the places where a projector could realistically go. A shallow room or one without a usable rear shelf or ceiling position often points toward UST. A room with enough depth for a rear shelf or ceiling installation may accommodate a long-throw projector.
These are layout tendencies, not guarantees. Check the candidate model’s throw ratio and distance chart against the image size you want, and account for the screen, furniture, mounting position, and lens offset.
| Your room or priority | Likely direction | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Shallow room or no usable rear projector position | UST | Model distance chart, console depth and height, screen size, and image offset |
| Room has depth and a rear shelf or ceiling position | Long throw | Throw distance at your desired diagonal, mount position, zoom or lens shift, and line of sight |
| Screen wall is not smooth or flat | Either, with particular care for UST | Screen flatness and explicit compatibility with the projector’s throw type |
| Frequent overhead lights or daylight | Either, within limits | Projector brightness, light falling on the screen, screen material, and whether curtains are needed |
| You want the projector out of the back of the room | UST | Front-console location, screen compatibility, and precise alignment |
| You want to reuse a rear shelf, ceiling mount, or screen | Often long throw | Compatibility and the existing setup’s throw range before replacing equipment |
What the throw terms mean—and why measurements matter
Throw ratio relates the distance from the projector to the screen to the width of the projected image. Christie defines UST as roughly 0.25–0.5:1 and short throw as 0.5–1:1; these are category ranges, not a substitute for a model-specific chart. “Long throw” and “standard throw” are often used for projectors positioned farther from the screen, but the cited manufacturer pages do not establish one universal dividing threshold.

Distance examples vary by model and by the point from which distance is measured. XGIMI’s 2026 buying guide gives broad examples of 6–20 inches for UST and 8–12 feet for standard throw for a 100-inch image. Optoma’s CinemaX P2 example gives a 100-inch image at 9.84 inches, measured from the closest body edge in its description. LG gives a 90-inch image at 2 inches for an UST example and cautions that throw ratio varies by model. These figures are not interchangeable specifications: check the diagram and distance chart for the projector you are considering.
Before buying, measure from the screen plane to each possible projector position. Compare that measurement with the manufacturer’s chart at your desired diagonal, then allow for the projector’s chassis depth, lens or body reference point, furniture, and screen offset.

Where each type sits in the room
UST: near the screen
A UST projector is typically placed on a media console close to the screen. That can free the back of the room from a projector and reduce the chance that someone will walk through the beam. It does not make installation automatic: Optoma warns that even a small adjustment to a CinemaX P2 can shift the image and make it appear out of square.
Long throw: farther back or overhead
A long-throw projector needs room depth for its image size and throw ratio. It may sit on a rear table or shelf, or be mounted overhead if the specific model supports that orientation. Plan for the beam path, cable routing, line of sight, and mounting limits. Zoom, lens shift, and offset are model-specific; do not assume they can compensate for an unsuitable location.

- THE LIVING ROOM UPGRADE THAT FITS YOUR LIVING ROOM — 0.2:1 ultra-short throw ratio sits inches from the wall, no ceiling mount, no professional installation, setup complete in minutes. At 200 inches, it delivers a screen 6× larger than an 85-inch TV — at a fraction of the wall space. Pair with an ALR screen for clear, high-contrast images even under direct overhead lighting. This is the all-in-one laser TV replacement for modern living rooms.
Screen surface and ambient light
UST puts extra demands on screen flatness
Because UST light reaches the screen at a steep angle, surface irregularities can be more visible. XGIMI’s guide says bumps can make the image look wavy and recommends a flat, rigid screen. It also says a UST-compatible ambient-light-rejecting (ALR) screen can help with ceiling lights and window glare. That does not mean every UST projector universally requires an ALR screen; verify the screen’s stated compatibility with the projector’s throw type.
Neither throw type makes a bright room disappear
Ambient light is a projector, screen, and room issue—not a benefit guaranteed by throw distance. XGIMI says both categories can struggle with bright overhead lights without ALR and that direct sunlight on the screen washes out either type. Christie notes that higher lumen counts can help in well-lit environments, while the brightness needed depends on the installation. Consider where light lands on the screen, the projector’s brightness, screen material, and curtains; direct sunlight remains a poor viewing condition.

Image quality is model-specific
The cited sources do not establish a controlled head-to-head winner for brightness, sharpness, or overall image quality. XGIMI notes that some UST projectors may have softer corners, which can be more noticeable with computer text; this is a manufacturer buying-guide observation, not a universal result. The same guide notes that light-colored room surfaces can reflect light onto the screen and weaken black depth for either setup.
Evaluate the exact projector and screen combination for the way you will use it. If you expect to display computer text, check corner focus; if contrast matters, consider reflected room light as well as projector specifications.

Use product examples carefully
Manufacturer examples show how widely specifications vary; they are not category averages or automatic home-theater recommendations. Ricoh lists its commercial UHL3660 as a 4K UHD UST laser projector with a 0.24 throw ratio, an 85–160-inch screen-size range, and 6,500 lumens. Those are specifications for that commercial model, not typical figures for UST projectors as a group. Christie’s commercial Captiva DWU500S is an example of a projector with a built-in 0.25:1 UST lens. LG’s UST technology page illustrates a 90-inch image at 2 inches while noting that ratios vary by model. Check current model and regional availability before treating any example as a product recommendation.
Plan the complete setup before purchasing
- Measure the room: record the screen plane to each plausible projector position, plus the available console or mount dimensions.
- Choose an image size: use the diagonal you actually want, then check the chosen model’s throw chart or calculator for that size.
- Confirm measurement reference points: determine whether the manufacturer measures from the lens or chassis, and include the unit’s depth and screen offset.
- Check screen compatibility: confirm the screen’s flatness, material, gain, size, and suitability for UST or long throw as applicable.
- Plan installation details: verify mounting orientation and limits, lens offset or shift, alignment needs, cable route, and whether people may cross the beam.
- Assess the light: note overhead lights, windows, and direct sun on the screen; match projector brightness and screen material to those conditions.
Christie says both UST and short-throw projectors reduce shadows, but this does not mean every setup eliminates shadows. Room layout and the beam path still matter.
