What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Short answer: choose the browser-control architecture before choosing Rust or Go. Go’s chromedp is a high-level Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) client with no third-party dependencies. In Rust, playwright-rs keeps Microsoft Playwright’s driver-backed model, while playwright-cdp speaks CDP directly and is focused on Chromium. The right choice depends on browser engines, driver processes, deployment, and the Playwright features your tests need—not on an assumed Rust-versus-Go speed winner.
What you are actually choosing
Headless automation has three layers: your application language, the control protocol, and the browser process. Go and Rust are only the first layer. A Go service can control Chrome through CDP with chromedp. A Rust service can either use Microsoft Playwright through playwright-rs, or use the separate playwright-cdp crate to control Chromium natively over CDP.
No reviewed documentation establishes that Rust or Go is faster, more reliable, cheaper, or more popular for every workload. Measure your own pages, concurrency, browser versions, and container limits before committing.
Architecture comparison
| Option | Control model | Runtime and driver | Browser scope established by the documentation | Good reason to evaluate it | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Go with chromedp |
High-level CDP client implemented in Go | No third-party dependencies in the package; Chrome is headless by default | Browsers supporting CDP; examples center on Chrome | A Go codebase needing direct Chrome/CDP control | Manage Chrome lifecycle, cancellation, and remote allocation deliberately |
Rust with playwright-rs |
Rust bindings to Microsoft Playwright | A local Playwright driver is part of the documented architecture | The cited remote example connects to Chromium-based Chrome; do not infer complete multi-engine coverage from that example | A Rust team wanting Playwright’s locator and assertion model | You deploy and version the driver as well as the browser |
Rust with playwright-cdp |
Playwright-shaped API speaking CDP directly | No Playwright Node.js driver; one WebSocket to Chromium | Chromium is the only fully supported engine; Firefox and WebKit entry points resolve to Chromium | Native CDP access with a Rust-only runtime | API coverage is not equivalent to full Playwright or cross-browser support |
How do I automate Chrome with Go?
Install and start with a context
The package documentation describes chromedp as a high-level CDP client for scraping, unit testing, and profiling. It is asynchronous and written in Go. Add it to a module, then create a context whose cancellation owns the browser session:

Chrome runs headlessly by default according to the package FAQ. For a visible local session, create an allocator with options that disable headless mode, but keep that setting out of production unless you specifically need it.

Remote Chrome and lifecycle
If Chrome is started separately, use RemoteAllocator and point it at the browser’s debugging endpoint. This separates browser hosting from the Go process, which can be useful in CI or a browser container. Protect the endpoint; an exposed CDP port grants powerful control over the browser.
The documentation states that a lost browser connection cancels the context. On Linux, started Chrome child processes are force-killed to avoid leaks. Treat those as package behavior and still add explicit timeouts, cancellation, and cleanup around every job.
How can Rust connect to Chrome over CDP?
Choose the Rust model first
Use playwright-rs when you want bindings to Microsoft Playwright and accept its local driver. Use playwright-cdp when you want a Playwright-shaped Rust API without the Playwright Node.js driver and can limit the target to Chromium.

Driver-backed Rust with playwright-rs
The documented remote-CDP example requires a local Playwright driver, then connects that driver to a remote Chromium browser. Its flow is representative:
- Install the crate and the Playwright driver required by the release you select.
- Start Chromium with a secured remote-debugging endpoint.
- Start the local driver from Rust.
- Connect to the browser endpoint.
- Navigate, locate an element, assert text or visibility, click, and close the browser.
A Docker-hosted browser can implement this split, but an example container is not a recommendation for a hosted service. Verify image maintenance, browser patching, network isolation, and endpoint authentication yourself.
Native CDP with playwright-cdp
The crate’s documented shape is asynchronous Rust: launch Chromium, create a page, navigate, evaluate JavaScript, and close the browser. A minimal pattern looks like this (adapt names to the crate release you install):
use playwright_cdp::Playwright;
#[tokio::main]
async fn main() -> Result<(), Box<dyn std::error::Error>> {
let browser = Playwright::launch_chromium().await?;
let page = browser.new_page().await?;
page.goto("https://example.com").await?;
let title = page.evaluate("document.title").await?;
println!("{title:?}");
browser.close().await?;
Ok(())
}
Check the current crate API before copying this into production. The important architectural fact is that the connection is native CDP over a WebSocket, not Microsoft Playwright’s Node.js driver.

Browser engines, headless modes, and CDP fidelity
Do not treat “headless Chrome” as one target
Playwright distinguishes its Chromium headless shell from its newer headless mode. A Chromium channel can select the newer mode, while branded Chrome and Edge may implement headless behavior differently from the default shell. Browser downloads, channels, and launch flags are version-sensitive, so record the exact browser binary and framework release in CI and consult the documentation for that release.
CDP attachment is intentionally narrower
Playwright’s connectOverCDP route works only with Chromium-based browsers and is significantly lower fidelity than Playwright’s own protocol connection. A browser launched outside Playwright may also lack the curated arguments that Playwright expects, breaking features. Use CDP attachment for interoperability, not as a transparent replacement for every Playwright capability.
Decision guide
- Existing Go service, Chrome only: evaluate
chromedpfirst. It keeps control in one binary and avoids a third-party driver dependency. - Rust team prioritizing Playwright locators and assertions: evaluate
playwright-rs, budgeting for driver installation and version coordination. - Rust team wanting a driver-free process: evaluate
playwright-cdp, provided Chromium-only coverage is acceptable. - Firefox or WebKit is a requirement: do not select
playwright-cdpon the assumption that its entry points provide those engines; its API documentation identifies Chromium as the only fully supported engine. - Remote browser service: design authentication, network policy, browser patching, and failure recovery before choosing a client library.
Deployment checklist
- Pin and record the application, library, driver, and browser versions.
- Verify the browser binary exists in the runtime image and has required fonts, shared libraries, sandbox permissions, and writable temporary storage.
- Set per-navigation and whole-job timeouts; cancel contexts or async tasks on failure.
- Limit concurrency according to CPU and memory measurements from your own pages.
- Keep CDP endpoints private and rotate any credentials used to reach remote browsers.
- Decide whether you need the Chromium headless shell, new headless mode, or branded Chrome/Edge behavior.
- Test lazy loading, popups, downloads, authentication, redirects, and pages protected by bot checks.
Troubleshooting
Chrome never starts
Check the binary path, executable permissions, container libraries, sandbox policy, and temporary directory. Capture stderr and verify the same command works outside the automation process.
The session dies midway
A lost browser connection cancels a chromedp context. Check browser crashes, memory pressure, network resets, and premature cancellation. For remote CDP, confirm the endpoint remains reachable and is not shared by competing jobs.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Selectors or assertions behave differently
Wait for the application’s readiness condition rather than a fixed short delay. Confirm that the element is inside the expected frame or shadow root, and remember that CDP attachment has lower Playwright fidelity.
Firefox or WebKit tests fail with playwright-cdp
This is an engine mismatch, not a selector bug. The crate documents Chromium as fully supported; choose a multi-engine-capable architecture instead.
Headless output differs from headed output
Compare the selected browser channel and headless implementation, viewport, device scale, fonts, GPU flags, and launch arguments. Branded browsers can differ from the default Chromium shell.

Cost and performance expectations
Library choice does not provide a documented speed or reliability guarantee. Browser startup, page complexity, JavaScript execution, network latency, image loading, and concurrency usually dominate. Benchmark representative URLs with identical browser binaries, viewport settings, warm and cold starts, failure rates, and memory limits. Include driver startup time when evaluating playwright-rs, and include remote-hop latency when using any separately hosted browser.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use chromedp with a browser running on another machine?
Yes. Start Chrome separately with a secured debugging endpoint and use chromedp’s RemoteAllocator. Treat the CDP endpoint as privileged control traffic and restrict network access.
Does playwright-cdp provide Firefox and WebKit automation?
Its API documentation identifies Chromium as the only fully supported engine; Firefox and WebKit entry points resolve to Chromium.
Is Playwright’s CDP connection equivalent to its normal protocol?
No. Playwright documents connectOverCDP as Chromium-only and significantly lower fidelity than its Playwright protocol connection.
