Puppet Strings generates reference documentation from Puppet and Ruby source files and their comments. From a module directory, run puppet strings to create browsable HTML in doc/; use the generate action to choose Markdown or JSON output. The quality of the result depends on documenting public elements, parameters, defaults, and constraints next to the code.
What Puppet Strings documents
Puppet Strings scans module code in directories such as manifests/, functions/, lib/, types/, tasks/, and plans/. It can produce reference documentation for classes, defined types, functions, tasks, plans, resource types, and providers. It can infer basic structural information from code, but comments supply the context users need to understand how to use each element. See Puppet Strings documentation and the upstream project.
Install Strings in the module’s Ruby environment
Install Puppet Strings as a Ruby gem in the same Ruby and Puppet environment used for the module. Puppet’s documentation and the project README describe installation for Puppet Agent and standalone Puppet gem environments. Because gem and Puppet version requirements can change, check the current upstream README before prescribing versions or installation commands.
Generate documentation from a module
Run the default command from the module directory:
puppet strings
This generates HTML under ./doc/. Open doc/index.html in a browser to review it. To generate a specific format or destination, use puppet strings generate:

puppet strings generate --format markdown --out docs/REFERENCE.md
puppet strings generate --format json --out docs/documentation.json
The generate action can also be given particular files or directories, making it useful to check only the code being edited. Consult the command documentation for current options.
Choose an output format for its audience
| Format | Best for | Content and default destination |
|---|---|---|
| HTML | People browsing documentation | README plus reference documentation; writes to doc/ by default. |
| Markdown | Reference documentation committed to a repository or rendered by a code-hosting site | Reference information only; defaults to REFERENCE.md. Use --out to select another path. |
| JSON | Custom tools and documentation pipelines | Reference information only; defaults to standard output. Use --out to write it to a file. |
These distinctions matter when choosing what to publish: Markdown and JSON do not include the README content that accompanies the default HTML output. Format behavior and defaults are documented by the Puppet Strings project.

Write comments that help module users
Put YARD-style comments immediately before the class, defined type, function, task, plan, resource type, provider, or parameter they describe. Start with a concise overview, then explain information users cannot safely infer from the type declaration alone.
- Describe the element’s purpose and intended use.
- Document each important parameter, including valid values, defaults, and constraints.
- Include copyable examples for common workflows.
- Use supported tags such as
@authorand@apiwhere useful. Mark implementation details that should not appear as public API with@api private.
Follow the current Strings/YARD reference for supported parameter tags and the complete tag list; do not assume a template’s tags are valid across every release. Puppet’s style guidance recommends comments for each element and explanations of valid options and defaults.

- Write or modify the Puppet or Ruby element.
- In the same change, update its colocated description, parameter documentation, valid values, defaults, and API visibility.
- Run
puppet strings generateusing the format your repository publishes. - Inspect the output for missing sections, outdated defaults, broken examples, and private implementation details exposed as public API.
- Commit generated reference output if the project’s contribution policy expects it.
Puppet’s guidance states: “Whenever you update code, update your documentation comments at the same time.” See Puppet Strings documentation.

Add a Reference section to the README
If the module uses Puppet Strings, include a README section that tells contributors how to generate its documentation, which format the project publishes, and where the generated files go. That short instruction connects the source comments to the documentation users actually find.
