Use Pipedream’s prebuilt Playwright Take Screenshot action to capture a URL on demand, on a schedule, or after another app event. Give the action a URL and filename, set the viewport, color scheme, and full-page option, deploy the workflow, and enable its trigger. The resulting image is written to /tmp; add a File Store or other storage step if you need the screenshot after the run ends.
What you need before creating the workflow
- A Pipedream account and a workflow.
- The URL that should be captured, including any path or query string.
- A filename such as
homepage.webporpricing.png. - A destination for durable storage if the image must be retained beyond the workflow execution.
Pipedream’s official Playwright component is a source-available, prebuilt action. Pipedream describes Playwright as enabling reliable end-to-end testing for modern web apps. The action launches a browser, opens the URL, captures the page, writes the file to /tmp/<filename>, and closes the browser.
Build a screenshot workflow in Pipedream
1. Create the workflow and choose a trigger
- In Pipedream, create a new workflow.
- Select the trigger that matches how the capture should start:
- HTTP request: expose an endpoint that another service can call.
- Schedule: capture at a recurring interval, useful for visual change monitoring.
- App event: start the workflow when a connected service emits an event.
- Send a test event when Pipedream asks for one, so later steps have sample data.
2. Add the Playwright Take Screenshot action
- Add an action and search for Pipedream’s Playwright Take Screenshot component.
- Connect the Playwright account if Pipedream prompts for an account connection.
- Enter the target page in the required URL field.
- Set Filename, for example
homepage.png. The file will be created as/tmp/homepage.png. - Choose a Color scheme:
no-preference,light, ordark. - Set Full page to true when you want the entire scrollable document rather than only the visible viewport.
- Optionally enter viewport width and height. If omitted, the component defaults to 1280 × 720.
3. Deploy and enable the trigger
- Deploy the workflow.
- Run a test event and inspect the action output for errors.
- Turn the trigger on. An HTTP trigger is ready to receive requests; a schedule begins running at its configured times; an app trigger waits for the selected event.
Configure the capture for common use cases
Viewport screenshots
Leave Full page disabled for a viewport-sized image. Set width and height explicitly when the screenshot must match a design breakpoint, such as 1440 × 900 or a mobile-sized viewport. The action creates the Playwright page with those dimensions before navigation.
Full-page documentation or audits
Enable Full page to include content below the fold. Long pages can produce very tall images, so choose a practical filename and plan for the resulting file size in your storage step.

Light and dark previews
The color-scheme input tells the page which preferred color scheme to advertise. It does not force a site that has no dark-mode implementation to create one.
Dynamic pages
The documented component calls page.goto(this.url) and then page.screenshot(opts); it does not add a fixed delay or a custom readiness condition. If the page renders data after navigation, modify the component or add a preceding step that waits for a condition appropriate to that site, such as a selector becoming visible. A fixed sleep is not universally correct: it can be too short for a slow response and waste time on a fast one.
Keep screenshots after the workflow finishes
/tmp is execution-local temporary storage, not an archive. Pipedream’s File Stores documentation says local copies in /tmp can be deleted after a workflow goes cold, and community guidance says files there are not guaranteed to remain between executions. If the image matters, add a storage action immediately after the screenshot step.
Use Pipedream File Stores
- Add a File Stores step after Playwright.
- Pass the generated path, such as
/tmp/homepage.png, to the upload operation. - Save the returned durable identifier or link in the event payload, database, notification, or downstream app.
Use another storage provider
An S3-compatible bucket, object-storage integration, or another configured provider can serve the same purpose. Upload the local file before the workflow ends and pass the resulting object key or URL onward. Check the provider’s current retention, access-control, and public-link behavior before making the image publicly accessible.

Pass a URL through an HTTP trigger
For request-driven captures, define the URL and filename as trigger inputs and map them into the Playwright action’s URL and filename fields. Validate the URL before launching the browser, restrict which domains are allowed if untrusted callers can reach the endpoint, and generate a collision-resistant filename when several requests may run at once. A storage step should use the same generated name or an execution identifier so concurrent runs do not overwrite one another.
Choosing between Playwright and GetScreenshot in Pipedream
Pipedream also documents a GetScreenshot API action that can be connected to an HTTP or webhook trigger. It requires a connected GetScreenshot account and API-key authentication.

Troubleshooting Pipedream screenshot workflows
The action cannot load the page
Verify that the URL includes the scheme, such as https://, and that the site is reachable from a hosted browser. Check the action’s run details for navigation errors and test the same URL manually. A bot-check or login wall may require a different capture approach or authenticated setup.

Confirm that the URL is correct and that the page does not require a later application state. Add a readiness wait based on a real selector or page condition rather than relying on an arbitrary fixed delay. For a long document, enable full-page capture and allow lazy-loaded content to finish rendering.

The file disappears in a later step or run
Use the path from the screenshot step immediately, then upload it to File Stores or another durable provider. Do not treat /tmp as a cross-run archive.
Two executions overwrite one another
Generate unique filenames using an event identifier or timestamp and use that same name for the storage object. This is especially important for HTTP triggers receiving concurrent requests.
The result is the wrong size or theme
Set viewport width and height explicitly and check the color-scheme field. Remember that full-page mode changes the image height, not the viewport width.

- Use an HTTPS URL and test it with a representative event.
- Choose full-page mode only when content below the fold is required.
- Set viewport dimensions when visual consistency matters.
- Wait for a meaningful readiness condition on dynamic pages.

Does Pipedream automatically provide a permanent image URL?
No. The Playwright action writes to temporary /tmp storage. Add File Stores or another storage integration and pass its durable identifier to later steps.
