To use it, authorize GitHub, install the Pages CMS GitHub App for the repository’s owner, and configure the repository with a .pages.yml file.
What Pages CMS does—and what it does not
Pages CMS is an open-source editing layer for static sites whose content is stored in GitHub. It provides a UI for people who need to edit content and media without learning Git, and writes those changes back to the repository. Your repository remains the source of truth, with changes represented in Git history.
Pages CMS does not generate the site or publish it. Your existing static-site generator still builds the files, and your hosting or deployment service still serves the resulting site. That separation lets a team add an editorial interface without replacing its established build and release workflow.
GitHub Pages is one possible hosting option, separate from Pages CMS. GitHub documents publishing from a repository, custom domains, and Jekyll support in its GitHub Pages documentation.

Set up Pages CMS with a GitHub repository
- Open the Pages CMS hosted app and sign in with GitHub.
- Install the Pages CMS GitHub App on the GitHub account or organization that owns the repository. Grant access to the repository you intend to edit.
- Open that repository in Pages CMS.
- Create
.pages.ymlwhen the app prompts you to configure the repository. - Use the browser editor to manage the collections and media locations defined in the configuration.
The official Pages CMS quick start describes this initial flow. The CMS needs GitHub authorization and repository access because its edits are saved to GitHub, not to a separate content database.
What goes in .pages.yml?
The configuration declares where media belongs and which repository files editors can manage. A minimal example can set media: media and define a pages content collection with a docs path and two fields: a string title and a rich-text body. In that example, media is the media folder, docs is the collection path, and the fields describe the editable content.

- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
Use the quick start’s current example as the starting point rather than treating those names as required conventions. Add fields and collection settings to match the files and content model your site actually uses. Pages CMS also documents options for media storage, filename rules, and collection views; consult the configuration documentation for the supported syntax and options.
How an edit reaches the published site
- An editor changes a configured content file or uploads media through the Pages CMS interface.
- Pages CMS writes the change to the GitHub repository, preserving the repository as the content source of truth.
- Your existing build process runs the static-site generator against the updated repository.
- Your deployment platform publishes the generated output according to its existing workflow.
The exact trigger for the build and deployment depends on how the repository is configured. Pages CMS is responsible for editing repository content; it does not take over the site generator or host.

Pages CMS vs. Decap CMS
Both tools support Git-based content workflows, but their setup and supported environments differ. Decap CMS documentation describes a React single-page app that wraps Git operations through GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket APIs. Its setup guide places the app at /admin and configures a backend to authenticate and update repository content. Pages CMS’s documented setup centers on the hosted app, its GitHub App, and a repository-level .pages.yml.
| Decision point | Pages CMS | Decap CMS |
|---|---|---|
| Repository and backend support | GitHub repositories, using the Pages CMS GitHub App, as documented by the Pages CMS documentation. | Documentation describes GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket APIs through its backend workflow; see the Decap CMS documentation. |
| Initial setup | Sign in to the hosted app, install its GitHub App, open a repository, and configure .pages.yml. |
Set up the CMS app at /admin and configure a backend for authentication and repository updates, as described in the Decap CMS setup guide. |
| Configuration and content model | Repository-level .pages.yml defines content collections, fields, media, and related options; consult the configuration documentation for details. |
Configuration uses Decap CMS’s own format and setup. The cited documentation establishes a configurable Git-based editor, not that its content model is identical to Pages CMS; see Decap CMS documentation. |
| Media handling | Media location and related options are declared in the Pages CMS configuration; supported details are in its documentation. | Not stated in the cited Decap CMS material. |
| Preview, review, and commit behavior | Not stated in the cited Pages CMS material. | Not stated in the cited Decap CMS material. |
| Generator and deployment | The site generator and deployment platform remain separate parts of your workflow. | The cited setup material describes the editing app and backend; it does not establish a particular generator or deployment workflow. |
The available documentation does not establish that either CMS is universally better. Compare the repository providers your team uses, the configuration each requires, how media is stored, how authentication fits your organization, and the editing and publishing workflow you need. Verify preview, review, permissions, and commit behavior against the current product documentation before relying on them.
