Can you install LineageOS on your phone?
Only if LineageOS lists your exact phone model and variant and provides the corresponding device guide and build. The project warns that “Devices not listed are not supported,” and a build intended for another device cannot be substituted. Check the live device page before downloading anything: support status and available builds can change, and a supported model may not have a build available at a given moment. Official support is community-maintained, not a promise that every issue will be fixed immediately. LineageOS porting guidance describes ongoing work on bugs, security updates, and performance; proposed ports are reviewed and may not be accepted. Can you build a DIY Android TV device with LineageOS?
Yes, for specific supported hardware. The official device index lists the Banana Pi M5 (S905X3, eMMC Only) with a distinct Android TV build. It also lists a separate tablet build for the same board, so choose the Android TV entry and follow its own installation guide. This is a board-specific DIY route, not a method for converting any retail smart TV or TV box.

How installation differs from installing an app
Installing LineageOS on the M5 means flashing firmware and the operating system, not copying an app onto an existing TV box. The official procedure uses Amlogic burn mode, LineageOS Recovery, and ADB sideload. At a high level, it has you hold the board’s SW4 button while connecting power to enter burn mode, flash the initial image or firmware, enter recovery, format data, and sideload the correct LineageOS ZIP. The guide warns that Amlogic flashing utilities can be finicky on some host platforms.

Use the live M5 installation guide for the complete sequence and current files; do not substitute instructions or packages for a different M5 build, device variant, or Android TV/tablet entry. The firmware-flashing steps can alter or erase device data, so follow the guide’s prerequisites and warnings before proceeding.
Do you need Google Apps?
No. LineageOS can boot and run without Google Apps (GApps). LineageOS says it cannot preinstall Google’s apps because of licensing restrictions. GApps packages are assembled by independent developers and are not supported by LineageOS. If you want them, use the LineageOS Google Apps page to find a package for the relevant LineageOS release and architecture, and follow your device guide’s instructions for installing it at the correct recovery stage.

For Android TV builds, the GApps page describes full and minimal package variants. The page says full includes Google’s Android TV launcher and recommendations applications. minimal leaves the included launcher in place; on LineageOS Android TV builds, the page describes that default as an Android 10-era non-GMS launcher. These are setup differences, not guarantees that a particular app will be available or that streaming services will certify the device.
