To use a proxy with a website screenshot API, choose a service that explicitly supports proxy routing, then pass the proxy address and—if needed—credentials in the service’s documented request field. The screenshot browser makes the page request through that proxy, so the target may see the proxy’s public IP rather than the capture service’s IP. This is useful for checking regional page variants, but it does not guarantee access to protected or geo-restricted content.
Keep proxy credentials and API keys on a server you control. Do not put them in browser-visible image URLs or client-side code.
What a proxy changes in a screenshot request
A website screenshot API opens a target page in a hosted browser, processes its HTML and JavaScript, and returns an image or document. A proxy is a routing setting for that browser’s network requests; it is not the target URL and is not a substitute for the screenshot API’s own authentication. Cloudflare describes its screenshot endpoint as rendering the page by processing HTML and JavaScript before capturing it (Cloudflare Browser Run documentation).
When the provider supports a proxy, the browser connects through the proxy to fetch the target page. That can help you inspect location-sensitive content or test a regional experience. Whether it works depends on the proxy’s actual egress location, the target site’s behavior, the provider’s supported proxy types, and any access controls on the page.

How to send a proxy to a screenshot API
- Confirm proxy support. Check the API’s current documentation for the exact parameter name, supported proxy types, and accepted syntax. Do not assume one vendor’s parameter works with another.
- Choose the proxy endpoint. Common documented forms include
address:portanduser:password@address:port. Some APIs accept the value as a URL; others define separate fields. - Send the request from a trusted backend. Keep both the screenshot API key and any proxy credentials out of browser code, public pages, and public image URLs.
- Set capture options. Add viewport and output format, then use supported waits, cookies, headers, or selector controls only as needed.
- Verify the result. Check the rendered page, redirects, locale, and any available status or error information. A successful API response does not by itself prove the proxy produced the geography or page state you intended.

How to choose a proxy-capable screenshot API
Do not compare proxy support as a single yes-or-no checkbox. The details determine whether a capture will be useful and safe.
- Proxy format and transport: Does the API accept host and port, authenticated proxy URLs, or both? Does it support the proxy type you have, including HTTPS proxying if required?
- Browser behavior: Does the service execute page JavaScript, and can it wait for a selector, a delay, or another completion condition? Cloudflare and Screenshots.dev document browser rendering or JavaScript-related controls in their documentation.
- Page identity: Can you pass the cookies or headers required for the page? Screenshots.dev documents header and cookie inputs; keep values sensitive and server-side.

How to check regional behavior
A proxy may help with regional-content testing, location-sensitive previews, and some network-restriction scenarios. ScreenshotAPI.net lists simulating different locations, accessing geo-restricted content, and testing regional variations among possible uses. These are not guarantees: a proxy does not ensure a target will serve a particular variant or allow the capture. Check the target site’s terms and the screenshot provider’s acceptable-use policy before using the setup for scraping or monitoring.
- Establish a baseline. Capture the page without a proxy and note its visible locale signals, such as language, currency, or region selector.
- Route through the intended location. Use a proxy whose egress location is known, in the exact format the screenshot API supports.
- Check the target’s own signals. Where appropriate, use a page that displays the observed IP or locale, or inspect the page’s visible regional content. A proxy vendor’s advertised location alone does not prove which location the target sees.
- Separate network location from browser settings. A proxy changes network routing; language, timezone, cookies, and page preferences may also affect what the site displays. Set those only if the screenshot provider supports them and the test requires them.
- Record redirects and page state. A country redirect, consent screen, login page, bot check, or cached response can make a capture look like a proxy failure when the route itself is working.
Protect API keys and proxy credentials
A GET-based screenshot API can be convenient, but query parameters are easier to leak through browser history, server logs, monitoring tools, and copied links. Never place a credential-bearing proxy value or API key in an HTML img URL that visitors can inspect. Make authenticated requests from your backend, store secrets in environment-managed configuration, and avoid logging full request URLs or authorization data.

Some services offer signed URLs for public embeds; use them only as documented and treat them as credentials with whatever scope and lifetime the provider assigns. Do not assume that a signed URL hides credentials if it is copied, logged, or shared.

- Proxy connection failure: Recheck scheme, hostname, port, username, and password; confirm that the API supports the proxy type. Encode reserved characters in credentials according to the provider’s rules rather than improvising a URL format.
- The page shows the wrong region: Verify the proxy’s actual egress location and check for redirects, existing cookies, locale settings, or cached output. Test against a page with a visible location signal.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: Confirm JavaScript rendering is enabled, then use the provider’s documented wait option. Check whether required page assets are blocked by request or resource filtering.
- The capture is logged out: The page may require a session cookie or authorization header. Pass only the required values through supported fields, keep them server-side, and confirm that redirects do not lead to a login page.
- The target shows a bot check or blocks access: A proxy changes network origin; it does not guarantee bypass of bot checks, CAPTCHA challenges, login requirements, rate limits, or contractual restrictions. Follow the target site’s and provider’s rules rather than trying to evade protections.
- Credentials appear in logs or a public URL: Revoke and replace exposed credentials, remove them from the public surface, and switch to backend requests or a supported signed-link flow. Review logging and monitoring configuration for stored request URLs.
