Do not assume the card is officially supported on Server 2019: NVIDIA’s current Windows support tables list ConnectX-3 families for WinOF and ConnectX-4-and-newer families for WinOF-2, but do not list ConnectX-2. Check the adapter’s exact model and driver before troubleshooting cables or buying optics.
Is ConnectX-2 supported on Windows Server 2019?
Official NVIDIA Windows support listings do not establish ConnectX-2 support on Windows Server 2019. NVIDIA’s Windows adapter-family overview identifies ConnectX-3 and ConnectX-3 Pro with WinOF, and ConnectX-4 and newer families with WinOF-2; ConnectX-2 is absent from those listed Windows families. The WinOF-2 compatibility matrix includes Server 2019 for ConnectX-4-and-later entries. Its displayed WinOF entries concern ConnectX-3 families and do not list Server 2019 among their operating systems.
That is not proof that no legacy driver or configuration can ever work. It means the cited vendor listings do not support claiming that a ConnectX-2 is officially supported on Server 2019. HPE’s 2019 listing for a Mellanox driver package named for Windows Server 2019 is not, by itself, evidence that the package supports this particular ConnectX-2 card; verify the supported adapter models in the package details before installing it (HPE driver listing).
Identify the exact adapter before choosing a driver
“ConnectX-2 VPI” does not identify the exact board, connector, firmware state, or currently configured link type. Record the card’s complete product or part number and PCI hardware ID. In Windows, open Device Manager and check whether the adapter appears under Network adapters or as an unknown device; open its Properties and note the driver provider and version. A recognized device with a loaded driver is a different problem from a card that Windows cannot identify.

Use a driver only when its documentation explicitly covers the card and operating system combination. Do not treat a driver for ConnectX-3 or a newer family as interchangeable with ConnectX-2, or present an unofficial or modified package as vendor-supported.
Can the card connect to an Aruba S2500?
The Aruba S2500 side uses Ethernet SFP+ media. HPE’s S2500 QuickSpecs list SFP+ DAC cables and 10GbE SFP+ optics, including SR, LR, and LRM options. The S2500 installation guide states that each switch has four 10GBASE-X ports intended for Aruba SFPs (Aruba S2500 Series Mobility Access Switch Installation Guide).

VPI means the adapter may support more than one link protocol; it does not prove that its port is currently configured for Ethernet. Check the exact card and port configuration. A direct Ethernet connection to the S2500 requires Ethernet mode on the adapter, not InfiniBand mode.
Match the media at both ends
Before selecting a DAC or optic, inspect the ConnectX-2 card’s actual port and confirm what media it accepts. The S2500’s SFP+ compatibility does not establish compatibility with an unknown NIC connector, cable, transceiver, or firmware combination. HPE’s QuickSpecs enumerate S2500 DAC lengths of 50 cm, 1 m, 3 m, 5 m, and 7 m, as well as supported optic categories; those switch-side specifications are not a guarantee that a given item will work with an unidentified adapter.

Troubleshoot a link that does not come up
- Identify the hardware. Record the ConnectX-2 part number, PCI hardware ID, port count, and connector. Also note the S2500 model and the switch port being used.
- Check Windows recognition. In Device Manager, confirm whether Windows identifies the card and note the bound driver version. If the device is missing or reported as unknown, resolve driver and hardware identification before assuming the switch or cable is at fault.
- Confirm Ethernet mode. Verify that the relevant adapter port is configured for Ethernet. VPI capability alone does not establish its active protocol.
- Verify media compatibility. Check the exact cable or transceiver model against both the adapter and the S2500. Reseat both ends and inspect for damage; do not infer NIC-side compatibility from the switch’s SFP+ documentation.
- Check switch port state and indicators. Ensure the S2500 interface is enabled and inspect its port LEDs. The installation guide describes the LEDs as reporting enabled state, duplex, and speed, which can help distinguish a disabled port or link problem from a Windows driver-recognition issue.
- Reassess the platform combination. If Server 2019 is a requirement and you cannot establish a suitable vendor driver for the exact ConnectX-2, use a NIC and operating-system combination documented as supported instead of assuming a driver for another generation will work.
What to verify before buying replacement media or hardware
- The full ConnectX-2 model or part number and PCI hardware ID.
- The driver and firmware versions, and whether Device Manager recognizes the card.
- The adapter’s physical connector and active link protocol.
- The exact S2500 model, software version, port configuration, and intended port.
- The cable or transceiver model and documented compatibility at both ends.
Without those details, there is no reliable basis to name a specific DAC, optic, or replacement adapter as a match. If the adapter is not recognized or lacks a documented Server 2019 driver, replacing it with a supported NIC may be less time-consuming than preserving the legacy card.
