A seller’s video is useful, but it cannot replace a live test.
Before you arrange to meet
Ask the seller for a recent video of the exact console powering on, displaying a stable image, connecting to the internet, and demonstrating its ports and buttons. If a disc drive is included, ask to see it working as well. Sony recommends this video check, while also advising buyers to test the console in person. See Sony’s PlayStation buying guide.
Request clear photos of the model label and serial number, HDMI port, controller, cables, box or proof of purchase if available, and any advertised disc-drive attachment. Sony flags removed serial numbers and broken warranty seals as warning signs.
Confirm exactly what comes with the console and whether you need a disc drive. The PS5 Pro has a port for the optional drive but does not include an integrated drive. Check the PS5 setup guidance and Sony’s PS5 Pro product page for details. Ask why the seller is selling and whether the console has been repaired, opened, or had problems. Vague answers are a reason to insist on a thorough test, not proof of a defect. Review the seller’s history and feedback, as Sony advises.

Inspect and test the console at handover
- Match the console to the listing. Check its model label and make sure the serial number is present and appears intact. Do not proceed if the number is removed or visibly altered. Sony identifies this as a warning sign; its US/Canada warranty terms exclude consoles with altered, defaced, or removed serial numbers.
- Look over the case and openings. Check for cracks, impact damage, liquid residue, heavy dust, loose panels, damaged connectors, or signs of unauthorized opening. An exterior inspection cannot confirm the condition of the components inside.
- Power it on and check the picture. Connect the console to a display over HDMI. Look for a stable image and normal menu operation; Sony recommends checking image quality and confirming the console powers on.
- Test ports, controller, and network. Try the USB connections you can access, connect by Wi-Fi or Ethernet if practical, and pair and test the controller. Confirm the console can reach PlayStation services. Sony warns that a console reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from those services. A successful check shows current access; it does not guarantee future access or resolve every ownership question.
- Run it under use. Navigate the menus or start a game and watch for unexpected shutdowns, overheating warnings, unusual noise, or other visible faults. Sony advises checking for overheating. A brief test cannot establish long-term reliability.
- Test an included disc drive. Insert a known-good disc and confirm it is read. Sony says the optional drive supports PS5 and PS4 Blu-ray games, plus 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD playback. Pairing the drive to the console during setup requires an internet connection. See Sony’s PS5 Pro product details.
- Complete the account handover. Ask the seller to deactivate the console from their account and confirm they no longer need access to it. Before signing in with your own account, reset the console to remove the seller’s data. Sony recommends deactivation and resetting before transfer; see its console transfer guidance for Canada.
Compare the offer, not just the console
Use the same checks across listings so a lower price does not distract from missing accessories, unclear service access, or poor return terms. Sony says third-party used PlayStation products may not be covered by warranty. Its certified-refurbished products include warranty according to its buying guide, but confirm the terms for the exact listing. The available US certified-refurbished listing is for a PS5, not a PS5 Pro.

What the checks can—and cannot—tell you
Sony lists the PS5 Pro with a 2 TB custom SSD and identifies HDMI output, USB ports, an M.2 expansion connector, and a disc-drive port in its CFI-71XX PS5 Safety Guide. Use the model label to confirm the unit being sold, rather than assuming every accessory or configuration is the same.

A live connection to PlayStation services is the practical check for current access, but Sony’s public guidance does not establish a tool that guarantees a console is free of all prior account, ownership, or service issues. If a status concern remains, contact Sony support before paying. Warranty terms also depend on region and circumstances: Sony’s cited US/Canada page describes a one-year warranty for the original purchaser, which does not establish that a used buyer elsewhere can transfer or claim it.
