To take a mobile-sized website screenshot with Puppeteer, set the viewport before navigating, load the page, then call page.screenshot(). Use explicit dimensions when you need a particular viewport; use device emulation when the test also depends on a named device’s metrics and user agent.
Capture a page at a specific mobile viewport size
This runnable example uses 390 × 844 pixels as an illustrative viewport, not a standard that represents every phone. Change the dimensions to match the layout or test case you need.

}- Launch Puppeteer and create a page.
- Call
page.setViewport()with the desired width, height, and optional device scale factor. - Navigate to the target URL after setting the viewport.
- Save the image with
page.screenshot(), then close the browser.
Set the viewport before navigation: sites can behave differently when first loaded at a phone-sized viewport than when resized afterward. Puppeteer also notes that changing isMobile or hasTouch can trigger a reload. See the Page.setViewport() documentation.
Choose between viewport sizing and device emulation
Set explicit viewport dimensions
Use page.setViewport() when you want to control the page’s width and height directly. The deviceScaleFactor option controls the device scale factor; choose values that fit the capture you are testing rather than assuming one setting represents all phones.

Emulate a known device
Use page.emulate() with a device from Puppeteer’s KnownDevices catalog when you need the device’s metrics and user agent together. Emulation is a shortcut for setting both the user agent and viewport. Apply it before navigation. Available device names depend on the installed Puppeteer version, so check the catalog for your version. See Page.emulate().
Control what the screenshot includes
- Viewport image:
page.screenshot({ path: 'mobile.png' })captures the current viewport by default. - Full document: set
fullPage: trueto capture the whole page, including content below the fold. - Specific rectangle: use the
clipoption to capture a selected region. - Specific element: use
ElementHandle.screenshot(). Puppeteer will try to scroll a hidden element into view before capturing it.
When a path is supplied, its file extension can determine the image format. PNG is the documented default; the quality option applies to formats that support it, not PNG. Consult Puppeteer’s Screenshots guide and the ScreenshotOptions interface for available options.

Troubleshooting
- The result looks like a desktop page: Set the viewport or emulate a device before calling
page.goto(), then check the configured dimensions. - The layout changes after resize: Avoid resizing after navigation where possible. If changing mobile or touch settings causes a reload, allow the page to finish loading again before capture.
- The screenshot is only the visible area: Set
fullPage: truefor the whole document, or useclipfor a specific rectangle. - A chosen device name is unavailable: Device catalog entries vary by Puppeteer version. Check
KnownDevicesin the version installed in your project. - The element is not initially visible: Puppeteer’s element screenshot method tries to scroll it into view. Confirm the selector identifies the intended element and that the element can be displayed.
Performance and repeatability
networkidle2 is used in the example as a navigation wait condition; pages that keep network activity open may not reach it promptly. If that is a problem, select a wait condition appropriate to the page and test, then ensure the content you need has rendered before capturing. For repeatable visual checks, keep the viewport dimensions, device scale factor, device emulation choice, target URL, and screenshot options consistent between runs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a mobile viewport make Puppeteer a real phone?
No. Setting viewport dimensions resizes the page; device emulation additionally configures device metrics and the user agent. Choose based on the mobile behavior your test needs.
