Windows 11 can suspend an idle USB device or port without putting the whole PC to sleep. This feature, called USB selective suspend, is enabled by default and is intended to reduce power use. Microsoft recommends leaving it on for normal use; if one peripheral repeatedly disconnects or fails to resume, a visible device-specific setting can be tested as a troubleshooting step.

What USB selective suspend does

Selective suspend is a form of runtime power management: Windows can suspend an idle USB device’s port while other ports on the same hub continue operating. The device can resume when needed, even though the PC remains in its normal working state. This is different from putting the entire computer to sleep. Microsoft’s USB documentation says selective suspend is enabled by default and strongly recommends against disabling it.

The feature is meant to avoid unnecessary activity and reduce power use. Microsoft explains that correctly suspended devices can help the system enter a lower-power processor state and can improve battery life on mobile systems, but does not provide a general percentage or battery-life estimate. Microsoft’s USB power-management overview describes those benefits qualitatively.

Why USB devices may seem to turn off

An idle device or port may be suspended as part of normal power management; that alone does not mean the whole PC has gone to sleep or that the USB device is faulty. If a peripheral disconnects unexpectedly or does not resume reliably, selective suspend is one possible factor, not a proven cause. Start by checking whether the issue affects one peripheral or several, trying another port, and reviewing the device maker’s current driver or firmware guidance.

How to test a device-specific power setting

Use this only when a problem is repeatable and the relevant control is present. The change is a diagnostic test, not a universal fix for USB disconnects.

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand the relevant device category, or Universal Serial Bus controllers if you are checking a hub. Open the affected device or hub’s Properties.
  3. If a Power Management tab appears and includes Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power, note its current state, then clear the checkbox for the test.
  4. Use the device normally and check whether the same disconnect or resume problem changes. If it does not, restore the original checkbox state and investigate the peripheral, port, cable, hub, or driver separately.

The checkbox is available only when the device or its driver exposes that control. Microsoft’s WinUSB documentation describes this driver-dependent user control. Microsoft also shows a similar checkbox for a selected hub in USB Type-C interoperability test procedures; that is a test context, not a general recommendation to disable suspend.

Why the USB selective suspend menu may be missing

Some Windows power settings depend on the PC’s hardware and manufacturer, and device-level tabs depend on what the driver exposes. Therefore, not seeing the checkbox or a particular power option does not establish that Windows has no USB power management. Microsoft’s power-mode support guidance notes that available options can vary by device and manufacturer.

Microsoft documents a separate USB settings > USB selective suspend setting under advanced Power Options in a support article for a specific Windows Vista troubleshooting case. That legacy path is not evidence that the same tree is available on every Windows 11 PC. If it is present on your system, it may offer separate battery and plugged-in choices; treat those as broader power-policy controls, unlike the Device Manager checkbox, which applies to a particular device or hub. The Vista-specific Microsoft article should not be read as a guaranteed Windows 11 menu guide.

Which control should you use?

Control What it affects When it is useful Availability
Device Manager checkbox A selected device or hub’s power behavior. A targeted diagnostic test when a particular peripheral has a repeatable symptom. Depends on the device and driver exposing the Power Management tab and checkbox.
Power Options selective-suspend setting Broader USB power policy; where exposed, may distinguish battery from plugged-in use. Reviewing broader power behavior rather than testing just one device. Not guaranteed in Windows 11; the cited Microsoft path is documented for a Windows Vista support case.

What to do if changing the setting does not help

  • Restore the setting you changed if the symptom stayed the same.
  • Check whether the issue follows the peripheral to another port, or affects other devices on the same hub.
  • Review current driver and firmware guidance from the peripheral’s manufacturer.
  • Continue troubleshooting the device, cable, port, hub, or driver rather than assuming selective suspend caused the problem.
