If a USB port will not detect, power, charge, or reliably connect a device, first test the device and cable in another port or computer, then test a known-working device in the suspect port. These quick checks help separate a peripheral or cable problem from a computer-port problem before you change settings. For USB-C, also verify that the computer port, cable, and device support the feature you need: the same connector shape does not guarantee charging, video, or Thunderbolt compatibility.
Why a USB port may not work
A connection can fail at several points: the peripheral, its cable, a hub or dock, the computer’s port, or the software managing the connection. A device that is not detected may also be underpowered or asking the computer to provide a feature that the port or cable does not support.
- Peripheral or cable fault: If the same device fails on another computer, suspect the device or cable.
- Hub or dock issue: An intermediate connection adds another possible point of failure; a hub may also need its own power supply.
- Power shortage: A peripheral may draw more power than the computer can provide, particularly when the computer is on battery or other USB devices are drawing power.
- USB-C capability mismatch: A USB-C port, cable, and device must share the capability in question. USB-C alone does not promise video, charging, Thunderbolt, or every data feature.
- Port damage or software problem: Debris, a loose connector, damaged contacts, a driver issue, or a device-specific error can prevent a connection.
Microsoft Support’s Fix USB-C problems in Windows puts the compatibility check plainly: “Make sure your PC supports the same USB-C features as the connected device.”
How to isolate the problem safely
- Reconnect the device. Unplug it and plug it back in securely. If the plug or port feels loose, do not force it.
- Try another port. Connect the device directly to a different computer port, bypassing any hub or dock.
- Test a known-working device in the suspect port. A keyboard, mouse, or other USB device that works elsewhere can help show whether that port is responding. If you use a hub for this test, make sure the hub has power.
- Test the original device and cable on another computer. If they fail there too, the issue is more likely with the peripheral or cable than with the first computer.
- Restart the computer. Then repeat the direct-connection test before changing drivers or power settings.
If multiple known-good devices fail only in one port, the host port or its configuration becomes more likely. These tests narrow the cause; they do not by themselves prove that hardware has failed.

Inspect the port without causing damage
Disconnect the device before looking into the port. Check for visible debris, a loose fit, or bent or broken parts. Do not scrape contacts, insert tools, or force a plug into an obstructed or damaged connector.
Dell’s USB port troubleshooting guide advises using compressed air with the can upright and in short bursts. It cautions against water, liquid cleaning solutions, or a damp cloth near USB ports. Stop and seek support if the connector is visibly damaged or loose.

Check USB-C compatibility, power, and charging
Match the feature, not just the connector
Check the specifications or markings for the exact computer port, then verify that the cable and peripheral support the same function. A display connection may require DisplayPort Alternate Mode or Thunderbolt support; not every USB-C port provides video. For external displays, Thunderbolt devices, or adapters, confirm the required protocol support and test with a direct connection. Microsoft’s Surface USB-C troubleshooting guidance likewise recommends checking compatibility and connecting directly while diagnosing.
Rule out insufficient power
If Windows says the USB device needs more power, connect the computer to AC power, disconnect unused USB devices, and use the peripheral’s own power supply if it has one. A powered hub may help when the peripheral is compatible but lacks sufficient power; it will not repair a defective computer port.

Confirm the charging path
For USB-C laptop charging, use a port designated to support charging and a charger and cable that meet the computer’s requirements. Faster charging depends on the computer, charger, and cable supporting the relevant standards and power levels. A USB-C plug fitting the port is not enough to establish charging compatibility.
Use the Windows error to guide software checks
If Windows shows “USB device not recognized,” open Device Manager, locate the marked device, and record the message or code under Device status. Follow the advice for that specific code rather than applying one fix to every failure. Microsoft notes that a generic recognition failure can mean the device reported a problem or that a driver is involved.

Common wording includes “USB device might need more power,” “Use different USB port,” “Slow USB charger connected,” “Device Descriptor Request Failed,” “Power Surge on the USB Port,” and “This device cannot start (Code 10).” The wording can point toward power, compatibility, or a device/driver error, but the specific status code and your device’s requirements matter.

Dell also lists power-management changes among its advanced checks, but disabling USB selective suspend should not be a routine fix. Microsoft’s technical documentation, USB Selective Suspend, explains that it lets Windows suspend an individual idle port to save power and strongly recommends leaving the feature enabled generally. If a targeted power-setting test is warranted, make it reversible and restore the original setting if it does not resolve a demonstrated problem.
When to contact support or arrange repair
Contact the computer or peripheral maker, or a qualified repair service, if several known-good devices fail on the same port, the connector is loose or visibly damaged, or the problem remains after the applicable model-specific software checks. Dell notes that a port that remains nonfunctional after its troubleshooting may need hardware repair.
Surface computers have a distinct USB-C reset procedure described in Microsoft’s Surface support guidance. Do not apply that procedure to other computers; follow the instructions for the exact model and manufacturer instead.
Windows support and model-specific guidance

Dell’s cited advanced troubleshooting applies to Dell computers running Windows 11. Port behavior, driver and firmware steps, and recovery procedures vary by computer model and operating system.
