To send USB requests from a Linux userspace program, open the device’s usbfs node, identify and claim the relevant interface, then call the ioctl that matches the endpoint or request: typically USBDEVFS_CONTROL for control transfers or USBDEVFS_BULK for bulk transfers. The node’s bus and device numbers can change after enumeration, so discover and validate the device at runtime rather than treating its path as permanent. The steps below describe host-side access to USB peripherals using the Linux 6.17 USB host-side API; check your target kernel and distribution’s device permissions before relying on exact behavior.

Understand the usbfs model before choosing an ioctl

Linux exposes USB devices to host-side userspace through usbfs, with device nodes typically named /dev/bus/usb/BBB/DDD. Here, BBB and DDD are the current bus and device numbers, not a stable identity. Enumeration can assign different numbers after reconnecting, so applications should rediscover the peripheral and validate its descriptors rather than save a node path as a permanent identifier. See the Linux 6.17 USB host-side API documentation.

USB is organized around configurations, interfaces, and endpoints. As the kernel documentation puts it, “USB device drivers actually bind to interfaces, not devices.” Endpoints have transfer types—control, bulk, interrupt, or isochronous—and the request you send must fit the device’s descriptors and protocol. A vendor-specific protocol may require details from the device or class specification; choosing an ioctl alone does not define what bytes the device expects.

Choose the request interface that matches the job

Need usbfs interface What to account for
Device, class, or vendor control request USBDEVFS_CONTROL Pass a control-transfer structure containing setup fields and an optional data buffer. Limits can depend on the kernel and host controller.
Bulk endpoint read or write USBDEVFS_BULK Use the endpoint address and direction from the descriptors, plus the buffer, length, and timeout.
Concurrent or sustained asynchronous transfers USBDEVFS_SUBMITURB and URB reap/discard operations Completion is collected later; asynchronous submission adds request-lifecycle handling.
Claim or release an interface USBDEVFS_CLAIMINTERFACE and USBDEVFS_RELEASEINTERFACE A claim can conflict with an interface already bound to a kernel driver. Closing the device descriptor releases claims.
Clear a stalled bulk or interrupt endpoint USBDEVFS_CLEAR_HALT Use this for a halted endpoint as documented; do not substitute a raw control request for the documented operation.

The kernel documentation also describes libusb as a userspace library wrapper option. A library can handle parts of device discovery and transfer management; raw usbfs ioctl calls expose the lower-level interface directly. Choose based on whether you need direct ioctl access, the transfer types the device supports, and how much asynchronous lifecycle management your application should own.

Open and prepare the device

  1. Discover the device at runtime. Find the current usbfs node, then inspect and validate its descriptors, including configuration, interface, endpoint address, and transfer type. Rediscover it after a reconnect; do not rely on an old BBB/DDD path.
  2. Open the node for the operation. Use the access mode required by your operation. The kernel reference says default usbfs nodes are writable only by root, so an ordinary application may encounter a permission error. Configure deliberate, narrow device access under the host’s device policy instead of treating running the application as root or making nodes broadly writable as the default fix.
  3. Claim the interface when needed. Pass the interface number to USBDEVFS_CLAIMINTERFACE before operating on it where required. Check for conflicts with a kernel driver rather than casually disrupting a driver that owns the interface. Release the claim with USBDEVFS_RELEASEINTERFACE when finished, or close the descriptor.

Build and issue synchronous requests

Synchronous ioctls are the simpler choice when a request can block the calling thread. The argument to an ioctl is structured data—not a generic buffer—and each call’s structure must be populated according to its definition in the target system’s USB headers and the kernel API documentation.

Control transfer with USBDEVFS_CONTROL

Set the control-transfer structure’s request type, request, value, index, length, timeout, and data pointer. The request fields must match the device protocol. Use the direction encoded in the request type to determine whether the data stage goes to or comes from the device; do not infer protocol meaning from the ioctl name.

Bulk transfer with USBDEVFS_BULK

Provide the endpoint address, buffer pointer, length, and timeout in the bulk-transfer structure. Select the endpoint and its direction from the descriptors. Bulk is appropriate when the device protocol uses a bulk endpoint; it is not a substitute for a control, interrupt, or isochronous transfer just because the application has data to send.

For both calls, check the ioctl result and, when applicable, the actual number of bytes transferred. A successful call does not mean the device-level protocol accepted or understood the payload; interpret returned data and protocol status according to the peripheral’s specification. Timeouts, stalls, and other failures should be handled as explicit outcomes. Host controllers may report failures differently, so avoid assuming one controller’s error behavior applies everywhere.

Use asynchronous URBs only when the concurrency helps

With asynchronous operation, submit URB-like requests using USBDEVFS_SUBMITURB, then collect completion later through the corresponding reap operations; cancel outstanding work with the appropriate discard operation when needed. This can support concurrent or sustained transfers without blocking on each individual request, but the application must track submitted requests, completions, cancellation, and cleanup. Prefer synchronous calls unless overlapping transfers or responsiveness justify that extra state management.

Handle stalls, errors, and unplugging

  • Timeout: Treat it as an operation failure or incomplete operation according to the device protocol; decide whether a retry is safe before resubmitting.
  • Stalled bulk or interrupt endpoint: The kernel reference documents USBDEVFS_CLEAR_HALT for a halted endpoint. It warns about synchronization concerns with USBDEVFS_RESETEP and USBDEVFS_RESET; do not use those reset operations as casual recovery shortcuts.
  • Disconnect: If a transfer reports ENODEV, stop issuing requests on that descriptor and close it. After re-enumeration, rediscover the device and validate it again before reopening and resuming.
  • Interface conflict: A claim failure can indicate that a kernel driver or another owner already has the interface. Resolve ownership intentionally rather than manipulating the binding without regard to its driver.

Keep the implementation on the correct side of USB

This API concerns a Linux computer acting as USB host and accessing a peripheral. It is not Linux USB gadget programming, where Linux runs on the peripheral side. For exact ioctl structures, device-node behavior, and operation details, consult the versioned Linux 6.17 USB host-side API reference and verify compatibility with the kernel and device policy on the system where the application will run.
