If a wired USB keyboard isn’t responding on your Mac, start by reseating it and testing another port. Then connect it directly to the Mac, check whether an Apple silicon laptop is waiting for accessory approval, and cross-test the keyboard and Mac to isolate the fault.
1. Reseat the keyboard and try another port
- Disconnect the keyboard from the Mac.
- Reconnect it, making sure the connector is fully inserted.
- Try another USB port on the Mac, if available.
Apple recommends these physical checks in its keyboard troubleshooting guide.
2. Connect the keyboard directly and check power
If the keyboard is connected through a USB or Thunderbolt hub, bypass the hub and plug it directly into the Mac. This helps determine whether the hub or its connection is part of the problem.
If macOS displays “USB Devices Disabled,” says the device needs more power, or cannot complete the operation, reconnect the keyboard and try another port. If you use a self-powered hub, check that it is connected to its AC adapter. See Apple’s USB Devices Disabled guidance.

3. Approve the accessory on an Apple silicon laptop
A new or unknown USB accessory may trigger an approval prompt on an Apple silicon Mac laptop. Unlock the Mac and allow the accessory. If you declined the prompt, disconnecting and reconnecting the keyboard may bring it up again.
To review the setting, open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessories. Depending on the selected option, macOS can ask every time, ask about new accessories, automatically allow accessories when the Mac is unlocked, or always allow them. 4. Cross-test the keyboard and Mac
Test the keyboard on another Mac, if one is available, and try a different keyboard on the affected Mac. These two checks help separate a keyboard fault from a problem with the Mac or its connection path.
