Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose a USB-C hub or dock for a monitor, peripherals, Ethernet, or charging; choose an SSD dock only if you specifically want a drive bay for attached storage. They solve different problems, and a dock does not improve game performance on Steam Deck. Check the exact accessory’s video, port, and power specifications against your handheld before buying.
What is the difference between a USB-C hub and an SSD dock?
A USB-C hub expands the handheld’s connections. Depending on the model, that can mean video output, USB ports, Ethernet, and power passthrough. An SSD dock adds a connection or bay for a storage drive; it may also provide hub functions, but the drive feature is the reason to choose one.
The name alone is not enough to confirm what a product supports. Some products called docks are primarily hubs, while an SSD enclosure is a separate accessory that connects a drive externally. Verify that the listing explicitly identifies an SSD slot or enclosure and states the drive type and size it accepts.
Which option fits your setup?
| What you need | Better fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| A monitor and a few peripherals | USB-C hub | Video output, USB ports, and power passthrough |
| Desk or TV setup with Ethernet, multiple accessories, or charging | Powered USB-C dock | Port selection, Ethernet, charger inclusion, and power available to the handheld |
| Storage attached through the accessory | SSD dock with a drive bay, or a separate external SSD enclosure | Drive format, size, interface, and whether the product supports external storage use |
| More game storage without an external drive hanging from the setup | microSD card, where supported | Handheld compatibility and card capacity requirements |
| Replacing the handheld’s internal SSD | Internal-drive upgrade tools and instructions for that exact model | Correct drive form factor; an external enclosure may help with cloning but is not the replacement itself |
What Steam Deck supports
Valve says Steam Deck’s USB-C port supports charging, peripherals, and video, and that “Any USB-C hub can be used to expand your options.” Its Docking Station connects the Deck to external displays, wired networking, USB peripherals, and power. Valve’s specifications list DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode and USB 3.2 Gen 2 over USB-C; that does not mean every hub supports the same video modes or data rates. Confirm the accessory’s own specifications. Valve Steam Deck Hardware · Valve Steam Deck Tech Specs

- BUILT-IN M.2 SSD ENCLOSURE, NOT JUST A HUB: The SABRENT HB-6PNV puts a real M.2 SSD enclosure inside a 6-port USB-C hub. Fit your own M.2 NVMe or SATA drive in the 2242, 2260 or 2280 form factor; the aluminum body and an integrated thermal pad keep it cool while it works. One integrated USB-C cable to your laptop gives you your ports and your storage in the same unit. Drive sold separately.
- 10GBPS TO THE LAPTOP, 5GBPS TO THE DRIVE: Know both numbers before you buy. The integrated USB-C cable connects to your computer at 10Gbps (USB 3.2 Gen 2x1). The internal M.2 slot runs at up to 5Gbps, which is quick for photos, project files and backups but is not the full rated speed of a modern NVMe drive. Two of the USB Type-A ports run at 5Gbps (USB 3.2 Gen 1x1, commonly called USB 3.0) at 5V/900mA, and a third Type-A port runs at 480Mbps (USB 2.0) for a keyboard or mouse.
- 4K 60HZ HDMI PLUS GIGABIT ETHERNET: Mirror or extend to one external display at up to 4K@60Hz through the HDMI 2.0 port, and drop onto wired Gigabit Ethernet (1GbE) through the RJ45 jack when the Wi-Fi will not hold. Video output requires a host that supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode) - most USB-C laptops have it, but check yours first, because a USB-C port without DP Alt Mode carries data and no picture. One HDMI output, not two.
- 90W BYPASS CHARGING TO YOUR HOST DEVICE: Plug your own USB-C charger into the hub and up to 90W of USB Power Delivery (PD 3.0) passes straight through to the laptop or tablet on the other end, so one cable handles data and charging together. Worth being clear if you are shopping for a powered hub: that power goes to your host device, the USB Type-A ports supply 5V/900mA, and no charger or power adapter is included in the box.
- WIDE COMPATIBILITY, AND THE LIMITS IN PLAIN TERMS: Works with Windows, macOS and Linux - MacBooks, laptops, tablets, smartphones and handhelds including the Steam Deck and ASUS ROG Ally - and an onboard LED confirms the hub is live. The M.2 slot takes 2242, 2260 and 2280 drives only, so 2230 and 22110 drives will not fit, and there is no SD or microSD card reader on this model. In the box: the hub, an M.2 rubber fastener, the heatsink screw and screwdriver, and the user manual.
For storage, Valve also lists UHS-I microSD support across Steam Deck models. A microSD card is a different option from a dock-mounted or externally connected SSD. Check the specifications for your LCD or OLED Deck rather than assuming that every generation has identical details.
What ROG Ally supports
ASUS documents docks that connect an ROG Ally to an external display, USB peripherals, and charging, but supported features differ by model. The ROG Gaming Charger Dock, for example, specifies HDMI 2.0 output up to 1080p at 120 Hz or 4K at 60 Hz, alongside USB-A peripheral use and USB-C charging. Those are specifications for that product, not a guarantee for other docks. ASUS ROG Gaming Charger Dock specifications

- OFFLINE CLONER, NO COMPUTER NEEDED: Copy one SATA drive to another at the press of a button, up to 60MBps, with the dock unplugged from any PC. Target drive must be the same size as the source or larger.
- READS AND WRITES TWO DRIVES AT ONCE: Both bays mount as separate drives when connected to a computer over USB, so you can move files between them or work off both. Hot-swappable, tool-free, with an HDD access LED per bay.
- SATA ONLY, 2.5in AND 3.5in: Fits bare 2.5in and 3.5in SATA hard drives and SATA SSDs. It does NOT support IDE/PATA drives, drives with a 4-pin Molex power connector, M.2 or NVMe drives, and drives are not included.
- WHAT COMES IN THE BOX: Docking station, power adapter and a USB Type-C cable. The cable is USB-C on the dock end - check your computer has a USB-C port or add your own USB-C to USB-A cable before you order.
- USB 3.0 SPEEDS UP TO 5GBPS: Plug and play on Windows and Mac with no drivers to install. Real-world speed is set by the drives you fit - a mechanical hard drive will not reach 5Gbps, and offline cloning runs up to 60MBps by design.

Does docking the Deck improve performance?
No. Valve’s FAQ says docking is “more akin to plugging a USB-C hub into a PC,” and that Steam Deck runs at full performance in portable mode. A dock is for connectivity and convenience, not a performance upgrade. Valve Steam Deck FAQ
Will a dock charge the handheld while connected to a monitor?
Some docks support charging while connected, but the result depends on the dock, its power supply, and connected devices. Check whether the unit supports USB-C Power Delivery, whether a charger is included, and how much power remains available to the handheld after the dock and its accessories draw power. Do not infer charging capability from the word “dock” or from HDMI support.

When does an SSD dock make sense?
Choose one when you have a specific need for a drive connected through the accessory—for example, keeping game files or other data on an external SSD. Confirm the dock actually includes an SSD bay or interface and check its supported drive form factor and protocol. If the product is just a hub, it will not become an SSD dock because an SSD is connected elsewhere.
External storage is not an internal SSD upgrade
An external drive adds storage outside the handheld. Replacing the internal SSD is a separate hardware upgrade with model-specific requirements. ASUS’s upgrade guidance distinguishes the original ROG Ally’s M.2 2230 drive from M.2 2280 drives used by newer ROG Ally X and ROG Xbox Ally-family devices. It also describes using an external SSD enclosure to clone the existing drive before replacement. Those internal-drive dimensions do not establish what size an unrelated dock accepts. Checklist before you buy
- Video: Confirm HDMI or DisplayPort support and the resolution and refresh rate you need. USB-C video support on the handheld does not guarantee video output from every hub.
- Power: Check USB-C Power Delivery input and output, the included charger, and the power budget available to the handheld with other devices connected.
- Ports: Count the USB-A and USB-C ports you need, and check their data speeds. Verify Ethernet and audio separately; neither is universal.
- Storage: For an SSD dock or enclosure, verify that it accepts the drive’s size and interface. For internal replacement, use instructions for your exact handheld model.
- Fit and setup: Consider the stand or cable arrangement, footprint, and whether a separate charger or storage accessory adds clutter.
- Model generation: Match the specifications to the exact Steam Deck or ROG Ally model, not just the product family name.
Recommendation
For a monitor and basic accessories, start with a USB-C hub whose video and power specifications match your handheld. For a permanent desk or TV setup, choose a powered dock if you need Ethernet, several peripherals, or charging. Pick an SSD dock only when you want storage connected through the dock; for internal SSD replacement, follow your model’s upgrade instructions and use a compatible enclosure if cloning is needed.
