They are not competing types: one charger can be both USB-C and GaN. To choose a charger, match its power output and charging protocols to your device, then check its ports, cable requirements and size.
USB-C and GaN describe different things
USB-C is the connector system
A USB-C port tells you what connector the charger uses, but not by itself how much power it supplies, whether it supports USB Power Delivery (USB PD), or how quickly a particular device will charge. Those details depend on the charger’s specifications, the cable and the device.
GaN is a semiconductor technology
Gallium nitride (GaN) is a material used in some charger power electronics. It can enable compact designs, but it is neither a charging protocol nor a speed rating. Navitas describes its GaN power ICs as enabling smaller designs; that vendor claim should not be treated as proof that every GaN charger is smaller, cooler or more efficient than every silicon-based charger. Where USB Power Delivery fits
USB PD is a power-negotiation protocol that can operate over USB-C. USB-IF says the connected equipment negotiates power, allowing a device to request what it needs. Its overview describes USB PD Revision 3.1 as supporting up to 240 W with a full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector. The revision’s listed fixed voltage levels are 28 V for up to 140 W, 36 V for up to 180 W, and 48 V for up to 240 W. These are standard capabilities under the specified conditions, not a guarantee that any USB-C charger, cable or device supports those levels. USB-IF USB Power Delivery overview
#1 Best Overall
- Faster & Cooler Choice: This UGREEN USB C Charger Block supports a max power transmission of 30W. Within 30 minutes, it can charge your iPhone 17 or Galaxy S26 to about 60%. Not only that, the Always-On Temperature Detection also ensures that it will not overheat during the fast charging process.
- Spend Less, Charge More: This USB C Charger has 3 interfaces, including 2 USB C and 1 USB A interface, which ensures its wide compatibility and can be used with different devices. You can charge three of your devices at the same time. Just enjoy the convenience of multiple interfaces.
- Real safety is safe inside and out: The charger features an upgraded GaN II chip, offering efficient heat dissipation and faster response to over-voltage, over-current, and short-circuit protection. Its housing is made of flame-retardant matte PC material, ensuring complete safety both inside and out for this compact charger.
- Compact and lightweight: This charger easily fits into your bag or pocket, making it perfect for travel, office, or daily carry. Its small size doesn’t just save space — it also keeps your desk tidy, reduces clutter, and lets you charge multiple devices anywhere without hassle.
- Multi-Protocol Charging: Supports PD, QC, and PPS fast-charging protocols. Tip: When using multiple ports simultaneously, single outputs up to 15W. For original Mag Safe accessories, use a single port.
Standards are revised: the USB-IF document library lists USB Power Delivery Specification Revision 3.2 Version 1.2, dated September 14, 2026. Revision-specific limits should therefore be read in the context of the particular specification and product. USB-IF document library
How to choose a charger for your device
- Check the device’s supported input. Find the power level and charging modes specified for your phone, tablet or laptop. A higher-wattage charger does not force a device to draw more power, and it will not necessarily make the device charge faster if the device or cable is the limiting factor.
- Match the charging protocol. Confirm that the charger supports the protocol your device needs. A USB-C port does not guarantee USB PD support or compatibility with a manufacturer’s proprietary fast-charge mode.
- Check the cable. Make sure it is rated for the power you intend to use. The USB-IF overview’s highest cited USB PD levels require a full-featured USB-C cable and connector.
- Read the multi-port power table. For a charger with several ports, check its maximum total output and how power changes when multiple ports are in use. The headline wattage may not be available from each port simultaneously.
- Compare portability and plug format. Check the product’s actual dimensions and weight, whether its pins fold, and whether its plug fits your region. GaN may be relevant if compactness is a priority, but the label alone does not establish a product’s size.
- Review the documentation. Verify the manufacturer’s output specifications and applicable compliance information. USB-IF explains that USB Type-C products use signaling defined in USB specifications to negotiate power and publishes compliance requirements for Type-C chargers. USB-IF compliance information
Example: one charger can be USB-C and GaN
LC-Power’s LC-GAN-100 datasheet describes a GaN charger with two USB-C ports, one USB-A Power Delivery port and a maximum output of 100 W. It illustrates that a product can combine USB-C ports and GaN technology; its datasheet does not establish current retail availability, output for each port in every multi-port configuration, or compatibility with a particular device.
