Install urlwatch on a Mac with Homebrew, define the pages or commands you want to monitor, test a run, and schedule it with cron. The interval between cron runs determines how often urlwatch checks for changes; the project recommends running no more often than every 30 minutes.
Install urlwatch on macOS
- Install Homebrew if it is not already available on your Mac.
- In Terminal, run
brew install urlwatch. The Homebrew urlwatch formula provides the install command and shows current package and macOS details; those can change over time. - Run
urlwatchonce. This initializes or migrates urlwatch’s data files.
The project documentation describes setup and command behavior in its introduction. Homebrew listed macOS bottle support when the formula was checked, but the formula page is the place to confirm current package details.
Configure your first monitoring job
Run urlwatch --edit to open the YAML job list, urls.yaml. Add one or more jobs for the content you want checked. Run urlwatch --edit-config to edit global settings, including reporter configuration.
Choose the right job type
url: Fetches a page directly. Start here when the content is present in the page response and does not require browser-side JavaScript to appear.navigate: Loads a page in a headless browser. Choose it when ordinary URL retrieval does not return the content you need because the page depends on JavaScript. Browser jobs use more resources.command: Runs a shell command and monitors its output.
The urlwatch guide documents these job types, filters, and configuration commands. Use the simplest job that captures the content you care about; browser rendering is not necessary for every page.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Reduce noisy page changes with filters
A whole-page comparison may report changes that do not matter to you. Filters let you focus or normalize the output before urlwatch compares it. The guide describes CSS and XPath selection and text, JSON, PDF, and other filters; filters can also be chained. For example, select a page element that contains the price or status you care about rather than monitoring unrelated page content.
Run a manual check and understand the result
After saving the YAML job list, run urlwatch in Terminal before creating a schedule. It retrieves or executes each job, applies its filters, compares the processed result with the previous output, and reports detected changes. This first manual run is useful for confirming that jobs work and that the result contains the relevant content.

By default, you can inspect reports in the terminal. urlwatch also supports configured reporters such as email and third-party services. External destinations need to be configured in the global settings; change notifications can include the changed URL and a unified diff. See the urlwatch project for its overview of change reporting.
Schedule recurring checks with cron
On macOS, the documented scheduling approach here is cron. Each execution runs urlwatch, so the cron schedule sets the checking interval. The project recommends not running checks more often than every 30 minutes.

- Open your crontab in Terminal:
crontab -e. - Add a schedule line for urlwatch. The guide’s example for every 30 minutes is
*/30 * * * *; the command follows the schedule fields, for example*/30 * * * * /path/to/urlwatch. - Save and exit the editor. If the command is not found when cron runs, use the full path to the urlwatch executable rather than relying on the interactive shell’s PATH.
- Confirm the schedule and output behavior on your Mac, including any reporter configuration needed to receive results when Terminal is closed.
To find the executable path for your installation, run which urlwatch in Terminal and use the resulting path in the crontab command. The cron example and interval guidance are documented in the urlwatch introduction.
Choose retrieval, filtering, and reporting deliberately
| Decision | Use this when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Direct URL versus browser navigation | Use direct retrieval when it exposes the needed content; use browser navigation when JavaScript is required. | Browser jobs are more resource-intensive. |
| Whole page versus filtered content | Monitor the whole output for broad changes, or select and normalize a meaningful part when unrelated page changes create noise. | A filter narrows what is compared, so choose it to match the change you actually need to notice. |
| Terminal versus configured reporter | Use terminal output for manual inspection; configure a reporter when notifications need to go elsewhere. | External destinations do not work until configured. |

A job returns no useful page content
If a page populates its content with JavaScript, an ordinary URL job may not capture the rendered result. Try a navigate job instead, and account for its greater resource use. If the content is present but the report is noisy, use a filter to compare the relevant element or content.
Cron runs but the expected command is not found
Cron may not use the same PATH as your interactive Terminal. Run which urlwatch and put the executable’s full path in the crontab entry.

No email or external notification arrives
Running a job does not by itself configure an external destination. Use urlwatch --edit-config to configure the desired reporter, then test a manual run and inspect its output.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a clean screenshot rather than change monitoring, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF; it is not a replacement for urlwatch’s recurring change detection.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
