To convert a URL to Markdown, either send the address to a URL reader such as Jina Reader, clip the page that is already open with the MarkDownload browser extension, or build a fetch-and-convert pipeline for repeatable processing. Choose based on whether the page needs JavaScript, whether you need only a selection, and whether the result must be automated.
Choose the right URL-to-Markdown method

Method 1: Convert a URL with Jina Reader
Jina Reader provides a URL-prefix workflow: place the target address after the Reader prefix, then request the resulting address. For example, a target such as https://example.com/article is requested through https://r.jina.ai/http://example.com/article. The response is Markdown suitable for saving or passing to another text-processing system.
Why rendering mode matters
Jina documents more than one acquisition path. Its browser fetch engine can execute JavaScript, while its lighter curl-based engine cannot. Automatic mode can combine approaches. If the article text appears only after scripts run, use the browser-capable or automatic option rather than assuming a raw HTTP fetch contains the visible page.
Useful controls
- Request Markdown, HTML, plain text, screenshots, or frontmatter according to your downstream workflow.
- Target a CSS selector when you need one article region instead of the whole document.
- Select an engine explicitly when the default fetch does not expose rendered content.
Reader’s live documentation also describes an experimental ReaderLM-v2 option. Treat model names, headers, defaults, and limits as changeable and verify the current Jina documentation before hard-coding them.

Method 2: Clip an open page with MarkDownload
- Open the webpage in Firefox.
- Install and activate the MarkDownload add-on.
- Choose the page or selected text to clip.
- Review the generated Markdown in the preview.
- Make minor edits, then copy the result or download it as a file.
MarkDownload describes a pipeline that simplifies page content with Mozilla Readability.js and converts the resulting HTML with Turndown. It also documents downloading all tabs in a window, which is useful for a small batch of pages.
When browser clipping is preferable
Use this route when you are already reading the page and want a visible preview, a selected passage, or a quick download without writing a script. The add-on listing states: “It is not guaranteed to work with all websites.” Complex layouts, paywalls, interactive content, and unusual markup can therefore require manual cleanup.

Privacy and permissions
The MarkDownload listing says its permissions include access to data on all sites for the download-all-tabs function and says no other data is captured or sent online. That is the listing’s stated privacy description, not an independent audit.
Method 3: Build your own converter
A reliable custom workflow separates two jobs: fetching the page and converting its HTML structure to Markdown.

Fetching
- Use a normal HTTP client for server-rendered pages.
- Use a browser automation engine when JavaScript creates the content you need.
- Define timeouts, redirects, authentication, and robots or access policies appropriate to your application.
Cleaning and conversion
- Remove navigation, cookie notices, advertising, and unrelated sidebars.
- Preserve headings, lists, links, code blocks, tables, and image alternatives where possible.
- Convert the cleaned HTML with a maintained HTML-to-Markdown library.
- Store the source URL and retrieval time alongside the Markdown so readers can trace the copy.
Jina’s documented architecture illustrates this separation with browser and curl acquisition choices followed by multiple HTML-to-Markdown profiles, including Mozilla Readability, a rule-based engine inspired by Turndown, and an experimental model-based option. The available documentation does not establish that one profile is most accurate for every website, so test representative pages from your own corpus.
JavaScript, selection, and automation decision guide
- The URL is not open in a browser: start with a URL reader.
- The visible text is created by JavaScript: choose a browser-capable fetch path and check the rendered output.
- You need one paragraph or article section: use MarkDownload’s selection workflow or a selector-based extraction.
- You need repeatable jobs: use a documented URL service or maintain your own fetch-and-convert pipeline.
- You need a quick file: use the browser extension’s preview and download controls.
Common problems and fixes
The Markdown is nearly empty
The page may render its content with JavaScript. Retry with a browser-capable engine, or open the page in Firefox and clip it with MarkDownload.

Menus and cookie notices dominate the output
Reader-mode cleanup may not identify every site-specific element. Use a CSS selector for the main article, select only the required text in the browser, or remove the unwanted blocks in a custom cleanup step.
Tables or code are malformed
Inspect the source HTML and test another conversion profile. Markdown cannot represent every HTML layout faithfully; preserve the original HTML when exact structure matters.

The page cannot be converted at all
Some sites require authentication, block automated requests, or expose content only after interaction. Neither a URL service nor an extension guarantees universal compatibility; use an authorized browser session or obtain an export from the site owner.
