It shows the status code, Location target, host changes, and final response. That makes it useful for site migrations, broken links, HTTP-to-HTTPS checks, and inspecting unfamiliar links—but a trace is not a malware or phishing verdict.
What is a URL redirection checker?
HTTP redirects are responses whose status codes begin with 3 and that normally include a Location header telling the client where to request next. MDN summarizes it as: “Redirect responses have status codes that start with 3, and a Location header holding the URL to redirect to.” MDN’s HTTP redirection guide documents the protocol behavior.
A checker repeats that exchange and presents a readable chain:
- The exact URL you submitted.
- Each response status and
Locationdestination. - The next request in sequence, including domain, scheme, path, and query string.
- The final response, an error, a repeated URL, or a chain that never terminates.
This is different from simply opening a link. A browser hides most intermediate responses, may execute JavaScript, and can follow additional browser-side navigations.

How to check where a URL redirects
Use a web checker carefully
- Copy the complete address, including
http://orhttps://. - Paste it into a redirect-tracing service that reports every hop rather than only the final page.
- Check the submitted URL, each status code, every destination host, and the final result.
- Compare the observed path with the path you expected. Pay particular attention to unexpected domains, tracking parameters, or a downgrade from HTTPS to HTTP.
Do not paste credentials, private reset links, signed download URLs, or other secrets into a third-party checker. A service may log the submitted address.
Trace from a terminal with cURL
For a repeatable, local check, use:
curl -sS -D - -o /dev/null -w "nFinal: %{url_effective} %{http_code}n" -L --max-redirs 20 "https://example.com/old-page"
-D - prints response headers, -L follows redirects, and --max-redirs limits how far cURL will follow. To inspect one hop at a time, omit -L, record the Location header, and request that destination yourself. This avoids hiding a problematic intermediate response.
For a quick header-only request, try curl -I "https://example.com/old-page". Some servers treat HEAD differently from GET, so confirm important findings with a normal GET request.

import requests
url = "https://example.com/old-page"
for hop in range(21):
r = requests.get(url, allow_redirects=False, timeout=20)
print(hop, r.status_code, url)
location = r.headers.get("Location")
if not location or not (300 <= r.status_code < 400):
print("Final response:", r.status_code)
break
url = requests.compat.urljoin(url, location)
else:
print("Stopped: more than 20 redirects")
Install the dependency with python -m pip install requests. The script deliberately disables automatic following so relative targets and every status remain visible.
Check with JavaScript (Node.js)
Node’s built-in fetch can expose each hop:
const start = 'https://example.com/old-page';
let url = start;
for (let hop = 0; hop <= 20; hop++) {
const res = await fetch(url, { redirect: 'manual' });
console.log(hop, res.status, url);
const location = res.headers.get('location');
if (!location || res.status < 300 || res.status >= 400) break;
url = new URL(location, url).href;
}
Some runtimes represent cross-origin redirects as an opaque response. If that happens, use cURL or a server-side HTTP library where you control redirect handling.
What the status codes mean
| Status | Meaning and method behavior | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
301 |
Permanent move. User agents may change a non-GET request to GET. | Old URL permanently replaced. |
308 |
Permanent move that preserves the request method and body. | Permanent API or form endpoint move. |
302 |
Temporary response; user agents may change a non-GET request to GET. | Short-term relocation or compatibility behavior. |
307 |
Temporary response that preserves method and body. | Temporary API or form relocation. |
303 |
Directs the client to another resource, commonly after POST, so reloading does not repeat the submission. | Post/Redirect/Get workflows. |
The code alone is not a diagnosis. A successful-looking 301 that ends at a 404 is still broken, while a 302 may be correct when a destination is genuinely temporary. See MDN’s status-code and redirection reference for protocol details.

How to read a redirect chain
Start with the submitted URL
Confirm the scheme, hostname, port, path, capitalization, fragment, and query parameters. A fragment (the part after #) is not sent to the server and will not appear in an HTTP trace.
Inspect every hop
Record whether each destination is relative or absolute, whether the host changes, and whether HTTP becomes HTTPS or vice versa. A normal site migration might show one direct 301 from an old path to its replacement. Multiple hops often indicate outdated internal links, chained migrations, HTTP-to-HTTPS plus www normalization, or a tracking service.

Classify the ending
- Expected final response: the intended host returns the expected success or application response.
- Unexpected domain: the chain leaves the organization’s domain or enters a URL shortener, ad, or tracking host.
- Error: the final response is a 4xx or 5xx, DNS fails, TLS validation fails, or a server times out.
- Loop: a URL repeats, such as A to B and B back to A.
- Browser-only navigation: the HTTP chain ends, but JavaScript or an HTML
meta refreshsends a browser elsewhere.
Why a URL keeps redirecting
Configuration conflicts
Common causes include simultaneous rules forcing HTTP to HTTPS, adding and removing www, appending a slash, or rewriting a path in both a reverse proxy and the application. Make one layer authoritative and test each variant.
Self-referential or circular rules
A rule that redirects a URL to itself, or two systems that disagree about the canonical scheme, creates a loop. Browsers eventually report a redirect-loop error. Google Search Console specifically advises checking for self-referential redirects and invalid destinations; see its “Not followed” troubleshooting guidance.
Cookies, geolocation, and authentication
Login gateways, consent settings, language detection, and regional routing can produce a different chain for different clients. Re-run the check with the same cookies, user agent, and region as the affected visitor, while avoiding disclosure of private tokens.

Redirects, search visibility, and site migrations
Google treats permanent redirects as signals that the destination should replace the source in search results. Temporary redirects generally leave the source URL as the preferred result. Server-side redirects are clearer to crawlers than client-side JavaScript or meta-refresh workarounds. Google’s site-move guidance recommends mapping each old URL to its most relevant final URL and updating internal links.
Google Search Central says Googlebot can follow up to 10 hops in a redirect chain, but that is an upper processing limit, not a recommended chain length. Redirect directly to the final destination wherever possible. After a migration, monitor crawl statistics, indexed URLs, and unexpected HTTP errors; a redirect does not guarantee rankings or immediate indexing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Security and privacy: what a trace can—and cannot—tell you
Open redirects
An open redirect accepts untrusted input that controls the destination. A trusted-looking link can therefore send a visitor to an attacker-controlled site. The OWASP Code Review Guide identifies unvalidated redirects and forwards as a security concern. If you operate the application, allow-list destinations or use server-side identifiers instead of accepting arbitrary URLs.
Tracking stopovers
A chain may reveal a tracker’s domain between the link and its destination. MDN describes redirect tracking as a cross-site navigation pattern that can use first-party storage to follow users; see MDN’s redirect-tracking documentation. The hostname and parameters show that a stopover occurred, not exactly what data was collected.
Why the checker is not a safety verdict
A redirect trace does not scan the final site for malware, prove that a domain is legitimate, reveal every script or server-side data practice, or guarantee that the result will be identical for every user. Treat it as one inspection step: verify the domain independently, use updated security software, and do not enter credentials merely because the chain looks short.

How many redirects are too many?
There is no universal safe number. One direct redirect is usually preferable; every additional hop adds a request, latency, another possible failure, and another place for cookies or tracking parameters to change. Googlebot’s documented ability to follow up to 10 hops should not be used as a target. For site maintenance, remove avoidable hops, update internal links to the final URL, and keep old redirects only as long as they serve real visitors or migration needs.
Or skip the browser setup
If your actual goal is to capture the final page after you have identified it, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is not a redirect-safety scanner, but it can capture the destination in an automated workflow:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots each month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Troubleshooting checklist
- “Too many redirects”: look for a repeated URL, then reconcile proxy, CDN, and application rules for scheme and host.
- Only one hop appears: the tool may not follow redirects, may be using HEAD, or may stop at a blocked response. Use a GET trace with a stated hop limit.
- Different result in a browser: inspect JavaScript, meta refresh, cookies, authentication, user-agent, and geolocation behavior.
- Unexpected tracking domain: preserve the full chain, remove sensitive query values from shared reports, and verify the destination independently.
- 403, CAPTCHA, or timeout: the server may require a browser, block your IP, or depend on a regional edge. Do not treat a failed trace as proof that the URL is nonexistent.
- Migration ends at 404: correct the source-to-destination mapping, then test the old URL, canonical URL, sitemap, and internal links.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a redirect checker follow JavaScript redirects?
Not necessarily. A header-based checker follows HTTP 3xx responses; JavaScript assignments and HTML meta refreshes require a browser-capable inspection.
Should I use 301 or 302?
Use 301 for a move intended to be permanent and 302 for a genuinely temporary change. For non-GET requests, consider 308 or 307 when preserving the method and body matters.
Can checking a URL notify its owner?
Usually the request creates a normal server log entry containing your checker’s IP, user agent, and requested URL. Avoid sending private links to services whose retention practices you have not reviewed.
