UPI merchant charges, settlement arrangements, and refund workflows depend on the acquiring bank or provider that onboards your shop. NPCI’s merchant FAQ says settlement is made as agreed with the merchant, and directs merchants to their acquiring bank for setup, transaction status, and complaints. Check your written agreement rather than assuming UPI is always free or that every provider pays out on the same schedule.
How does a shop start accepting UPI?
NPCI says merchants onboard by partnering with an acquiring bank, which provides the UPI infrastructure and handles merchant identification and setup. Contact the bank or payment provider you intend to use and ask what onboarding documents, account details, and acceptance options it requires. The exact process is provider-specific. NPCI’s UPI merchant FAQ lists QR, intent, application-based, and collect as merchant acceptance modes.
QR, soundbox, and POS options
A QR is one way to accept UPI, not the only way. The NPCI FAQ describes merchant QR information as including the merchant UPI ID. A printed QR or countertop stand is an optional display for your shop’s own valid merchant QR; it is not a substitute for merchant onboarding. The reviewed FAQ does not require every shop to have a soundbox, POS terminal, or separate display.
What does UPI cost a shop owner?
The reviewed NPCI merchant FAQ does not state a universal merchant fee or a current provider-by-provider rate card. Ask your acquiring bank or provider to identify each applicable transaction, service, or equipment charge in writing, and compare that with your agreement. Do not assume UPI is always free to the merchant, and do not apply card MDR rates to UPI.

When will UPI settlement reach the shop?
NPCI says the merchant receives the money immediately after the customer confirms payment into the merchant pool bank account or merchant bank account, as agreed with the merchant. The destination and arrangement therefore depend on your agreement. This statement does not establish a universal payout schedule for all providers or account setups; check your contract for the settlement destination and any provider-specific timing or reconciliation terms. How should a merchant refund a customer?
For returned goods or rejected services, NPCI says the merchant should ask its bank to refund the charged amount under the defined process. Use your acquirer’s refund workflow and provide the original transaction details so the bank can identify the payment. The FAQ does not establish a universal posting time for a voluntary merchant refund; ask your bank or provider when the customer should expect the credit to appear. NPCI’s merchant FAQ.
What if a UPI payment is pending or failed?
Separate a failed or pending customer payment from a refund that your shop initiates after a return. NPCI’s customer FAQ says a failed payment that debited the payer’s account is to be refunded, while noting that a reversal may take longer than intended; it advises contacting the bank if the amount has not returned within an hour. For a pending transaction, NPCI says delay can occur at the beneficiary bank and describes the amount reaching the beneficiary after the bank’s daily settlements, with a 48-hour statement. Who should a merchant contact about a transaction?
