Boot Camp does not officially support installing Windows 11 directly on a Mac. Apple’s current Boot Camp documentation covers Windows 10 on Intel-based Macs, while Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0, Secure Boot capability, and a supported processor. As a result, an Intel Mac can sometimes run Windows 11 through an unofficial upgrade path, but Apple and Microsoft may not support the resulting installation.

The safest practical route is to install Windows 10 with Boot Camp, install Apple’s Windows support software, update Windows 10 fully, and then attempt an in-place Windows 11 upgrade. Before proceeding, create a backup of important macOS and Windows files.

Check whether your Mac can use Boot Camp

Boot Camp is available only on Intel Macs. It is not available on Macs with Apple silicon, including M1, M2, M3, M4, and later Apple-silicon models. Apple’s supported Intel range includes:

Mac family Supported models listed by Apple
MacBook Models introduced from 2015 through 2017
MacBook Air Models introduced from 2012 through 2020, excluding MacBook Air (M1, 2020)
MacBook Pro Models introduced from 2012 through 2020, excluding MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020)
Mac mini Models introduced from 2012 through 2018
iMac Models introduced from 2012 through 2020
iMac Pro All models
Mac Pro Models introduced from 2013 through 2019

Check Apple’s Boot Camp support page for the exact requirements for your model. If you have an Apple-silicon Mac, use a virtualization product or another Windows-on-Arm method instead; Boot Camp is not an option.

Understand the Windows 11 compatibility problem

Windows 11 requires a compatible 64-bit processor, at least 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, DirectX 12 graphics with WDDM 2.0, UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable, and TPM 2.0. Apple’s Boot Camp documentation does not state that Intel Macs are Windows 11-compatible, and many Boot Camp installations fail one or more of these checks.

Do not assume that a Mac’s T2 Security Chip automatically satisfies Windows 11’s TPM 2.0 requirement. Apple does not make that claim in its Boot Camp documentation.

Microsoft’s current download page offers the Windows 11 2025 Update, version 25H2, as a multi-edition x64 ISO. The installation language must match the language of the existing Windows installation when using installation media for an in-place upgrade.

Prepare before installing

  1. Back up your files. Save important macOS data with Time Machine or another backup system. Also back up files stored in the Windows partition.
  2. Free storage on the Mac startup disk. Apple requires at least 64 GB of free space. Apple says 128 GB or more gives a better experience because Windows updates need substantial free space.
  3. Download the Windows 10 ISO. Apple’s supported Boot Camp procedure is for Windows 10. Use a legitimate Microsoft ISO or installation source.
  4. Download Windows 11 only from Microsoft. Use the Download Windows 11 page. Avoid modified ISOs that remove hardware checks or bundle unknown software.
  5. Prepare a USB drive if Boot Camp requests one. Apple specifies a USB flash drive of at least 16 GB for Macs that require USB installation media. Creating installation media erases the USB drive, so copy its contents elsewhere first.
  6. Install pending macOS updates. This is not a substitute for checking model compatibility, but current firmware and Boot Camp support software reduce avoidable installation problems.

Check Secure Boot on a T2 Mac

If your Intel Mac has a T2 Security Chip, start it in macOS Recovery by restarting and holding Command-R. Open Utilities > Startup Security Utility and check the Secure Boot setting. Apple says the default is Full Security. If it was changed to No Security, restore Full Security before installing Windows.

After Windows is installed, Apple says any Secure Boot setting can be used without preventing Windows from starting. This setting, however, does not guarantee that Windows 11 will pass Microsoft’s hardware checks.

Install Windows 10 with Boot Camp

  1. In macOS, open Applications > Utilities > Boot Camp Assistant.
  2. Follow the onscreen instructions. When asked for the Windows ISO, select the Windows 10 ISO you downloaded.
  3. If Boot Camp Assistant asks for a USB drive, insert the 16 GB-or-larger drive. Its contents will be erased while the installer is created.
  4. Move the partition divider to choose the Windows partition size. Choose carefully: Apple’s Boot Camp installation procedure does not provide a later resize option. Leave enough room for Windows, applications, updates, and personal files; 128 GB is a more practical starting point than the 64 GB minimum.
  5. Allow Boot Camp Assistant to partition the disk and restart the Mac.
  6. When Windows Setup asks where to install Windows, select the partition named BOOTCAMP. Do not select the macOS, recovery, or other data partitions.
  7. Click Format if Windows Setup does not format BOOTCAMP automatically, then select the formatted BOOTCAMP partition and click Next.
  8. Disconnect external devices that are not needed and complete Windows Setup.
  9. After Windows starts, look for the window titled Welcome to the Boot Camp installer. Follow its instructions to install Boot Camp and Windows support software, then restart when prompted.

If the Boot Camp installer does not start automatically, open it manually from the USB installer or the Boot Camp support-software location supplied by Apple. Do not skip the Apple drivers: they provide essential support for the Mac keyboard, trackpad, graphics, sound, Wi-Fi, and other hardware.

Update Windows 10 before attempting Windows 11

A direct Windows 10-to-Windows 11 upgrade requires Windows 10 version 2004 or later and the September 14, 2021 security update or later. In practice, install every available Windows 10 update first.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  2. Click Check for updates.
  3. Install available updates and restart.
  4. Repeat the check until Windows reports that it is up to date.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides normal free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. That makes continuing with Windows 10 a poor long-term plan, but it remains the Windows version documented by Apple for Boot Camp.

Try the supported Windows 11 in-place upgrade procedure

If Windows Update offers Windows 11 and the Mac passes Microsoft’s checks, you can use the normal upgrade process. Windows 11 may not appear immediately even on an eligible PC: Microsoft says the offer can be delayed, blocked temporarily by a known compatibility issue, or withheld because the hardware does not meet the requirements.

You can also use Windows 11 installation media:

  1. Sign in to Windows 10.
  2. Mount the Windows 11 ISO. In File Explorer, right-click the ISO, choose Properties > General > Change… beside Opens with, select Windows Explorer, and click Apply. Right-click the ISO again and select Mount.
  3. Open the mounted virtual disc and double-click setup.exe.
  4. If User Account Control appears, click Yes. Provide administrator credentials if requested.
  5. At Ready to install, check the selected option. The default is Keep personal files and apps.
  6. Choose Change what to keep if you need a different option: Keep personal files and apps, Keep personal files only, or Nothing.
  7. Continue through Windows Setup and allow the Mac to restart as required.

If there is no automatic prompt for installation media, open Right-click Start > File Explorer > This PC. Under Devices and drives, right-click the mounted installation media and choose Install or run program from your media.

If Windows 11 blocks the upgrade

An Intel Mac commonly fails the Windows 11 check because of TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, or processor eligibility. A Microsoft Q&A answer describes registry commands that bypass some Setup checks:

REG ADD HKLMSystemSetupLabConfig /v BypassTPMCheck /d 1 /t REG_DWORD /f
REG ADD HKLMSystemSetupLabConfig /v BypassSecureBootCheck /d 1 /t REG_DWORD /f

If Setup also rejects the processor, the same answer documents:

REG ADD HKLMSystemSetupLabConfig /v BypassCPUCheck /d 1 /t REG_DWORD /f

These commands are an unofficial workaround, not an Apple- or Microsoft-supported Boot Camp installation method. To use them during Windows Setup, press Shift+F10 to open Command Prompt, enter the applicable commands, close Command Prompt, and return to Setup.

The commands only bypass checks. They do not add TPM 2.0, create Secure Boot capability, or make the processor supported. Microsoft warns that Windows 11 installations on hardware below the minimum requirements can have compatibility problems, are unsupported, and are not guaranteed to receive updates. Make a complete backup before attempting this route, and expect that a future update or driver issue may require reinstalling Windows.

Switch between macOS and Windows

Restart the Mac and immediately hold the Option (⌥) key. Select the macOS or Windows startup volume. In Windows, Boot Camp’s system-tray control can also set the next startup disk or restart into macOS.

Fix common problems

Problem What to do
Windows 11 is not offered in Windows Update Install all pending Windows 10 updates, restart, and check again. The offer may also be delayed or blocked by a compatibility issue.
“This PC doesn’t currently meet Windows 11 system requirements” Check TPM 2.0, Secure Boot capability, CPU, RAM, storage, graphics, and UEFI requirements. On a Mac, one of these checks commonly fails.
The BOOTCAMP partition is too small Apple says it cannot be resized through the normal Boot Camp procedure. Back up Windows data, remove the Windows partition with Boot Camp Assistant, and recreate it at a larger size. Do not use another disk utility to remove it.
Setup targets the wrong partition Stop and return to the partition list. The correct target is the partition labeled BOOTCAMP. Choosing another partition can overwrite macOS or personal data.
The Boot Camp installer does not open Open the Boot Camp installer manually and install Apple’s Windows support software and drivers.
An external Thunderbolt 3 display goes blank Apple says the display can remain black, gray, or blue for up to two minutes while drivers install. Wait before forcing a shutdown.
The USB drive lost its files That is expected when creating installation media. Restore the files from your backup after the process.
Windows repeatedly returns to the installer Undo any boot-order change that made the installer the first startup device, then restart so the internal Windows installation boots.

What not to assume

  • Boot Camp does not officially support Windows 11 merely because Windows 10 runs on the Mac.
  • Apple-silicon Macs cannot use Boot Camp.
  • A T2 chip should not be treated as verified TPM 2.0 support for Windows 11.
  • The Boot Camp partition cannot be resized later using Boot Camp Assistant’s installation workflow.
  • The Windows 11 Installation Assistant is not a universal Mac installer. Microsoft supports it on x64 processors and says it does not run on Arm-based PCs.

FAQ

Can Boot Camp install Windows 11 officially?

No. Apple’s current Boot Camp documentation covers Windows 10 on Intel-based Macs, not Windows 11. Windows 11 may be installed through an unofficial upgrade workaround, but that configuration is not supported by Apple or Microsoft.

Best Value

Can I install Windows 11 with Boot Camp on an M1 or newer Mac?

No. Boot Camp is unavailable on Apple-silicon Macs. Use a supported virtualization or Windows-on-Arm solution instead.

How much space should I give the Boot Camp partition?

Apple requires at least 64 GB of free storage and recommends 128 GB or more for a better experience. Choose carefully because Apple’s documented Boot Camp procedure does not let you resize the partition later.

Will Windows 11 updates work after bypassing the checks?

They are not guaranteed. Microsoft warns that installations on hardware below the minimum requirements are unsupported and may not receive updates. Keep backups and treat the installation as experimental.

Why does Windows Setup reject my Mac?

The usual causes are missing TPM 2.0, lack of recognized Secure Boot capability, an unsupported processor, or another Windows 11 requirement involving RAM, storage, graphics, or UEFI firmware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

On an Intel Mac, the documented process is to install Windows 10 with Boot Camp and then attempt a Windows 11 in-place upgrade. That upgrade may pass on some Macs, but Apple does not officially document Windows 11 support. If Setup rejects the Mac, registry bypasses exist, but they leave Windows 11 unsupported and do not solve the underlying hardware limitations. Apple-silicon Macs cannot use Boot Camp at all.
