Update Chrome to the latest version offered for your device to protect against CVE-2026-0628, a flaw involving Gemini Live inside Chrome’s browser-integrated panel. On desktop, open More > Help > About Google Chrome, then select Relaunch if it appears. The historical fixed-version threshold was Chrome 143.0.7499.192; it is not a recommendation to install that old build today.

What was the Gemini security flaw?

CVE-2026-0628 was an insufficient policy enforcement vulnerability in Chrome’s WebView tag, affecting Gemini Live when loaded in Chrome’s integrated Gemini panel. The National Vulnerability Database describes the affected threshold as Chrome versions before 143.0.7499.192. Google fixed the issue in early January 2026, according to Palo Alto Networks Unit 42, which published its technical report on March 2, 2026. Unit 42’s report and the NVD entry for CVE-2026-0628 document the issue.

The issue concerned Chrome’s declarativeNetRequests extension API. Extensions using this API can intercept and modify properties of HTTPS requests and responses. Unit 42 says that kind of modification is expected when Gemini’s web app runs in an ordinary tab. The flaw was that the same mechanism could affect Gemini when it ran in Chrome’s more privileged, browser-integrated panel.

What could an attacker have done?

The attack described by Unit 42 required a user to install a malicious extension. In the researchers’ demonstration, the user then opened Gemini from Chrome’s toolbar. Unit 42 reported that successful exploitation could enable the extension to:

How do I update Google Chrome?

On desktop, use Chrome’s built-in update page:

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. In the upper-right corner, select More (the three-dot menu), then Help, then About Google Chrome.
  3. Let Chrome check for updates. If Relaunch appears, select it to finish applying the update.

Google says Chrome normally updates in the background when the browser is closed and reopened. If you postpone a relaunch, the update applies the next time Chrome restarts. If Relaunch is not shown, Google’s help page says Chrome is already on the latest version available to it. See Google’s instructions for updating Chrome.
