It coordinates the session; it does not carry the call’s audio or video. SIP commonly works with SDP, which describes the media participants can use, and RTP, which transports that media.
What SIP does
The IETF defines SIP as an application-layer control protocol for creating, modifying, and terminating sessions with one or more participants. It can support internet telephone calls, multimedia distribution, and conferences. SIP is about setting up and managing a communication session, rather than carrying the real-time sound or video itself. RFC 3261
SIP is designed to be independent of the type of session and can run over different transport protocols. That flexibility does not mean every transport or deployment behaves the same way or provides the same security.
How SIP helps a call get started
SIP uses requests and responses. A SIP user agent—software or a device acting for a participant—can send a request to initiate or change a session, and can receive and respond to requests from another participant. Proxy servers may sit between endpoints to route requests, apply policy, or provide services.

Registration can make a user’s current location available to proxy infrastructure, helping the network direct incoming requests. The route a request takes depends on the service and network setup; there is no single call path that describes every SIP deployment. SIP transactions and dialogs provide a framework for managing the messages and ongoing session.
SIP, SDP, and RTP have different jobs

These roles are related but separate: SIP can carry an SDP description while endpoints negotiate session details, and RTP can carry the resulting media. A secure setup may also use SRTP, RTP’s secure profile. The IETF’s guidance treats SIP, SDP, RTP, and SRTP as parts of a coordinated media-protection design, not as interchangeable protocols. What SIP security does—and does not—guarantee
Using SIP alone does not guarantee that signaling or media is confidential, protected from tampering, or secured end to end. Security depends on the deployment: which parties and network segments are protected, what authentication and transport protections are used, and whether the media itself is encrypted.
For example, protecting signaling between an endpoint and an intermediary does not, by itself, establish that media is protected between the communicating endpoints. SDP also needs appropriate trust safeguards. RFC 8866 warns against trusting a session description unless it comes from a known, trusted source through authenticated and integrity-protected transport.

RFC 3261 discusses SIP risks including registration hijacking, server impersonation, message-body tampering, denial of service, and amplification. When evaluating a SIP service, ask what signaling is protected, between which parties, how endpoints are authenticated, and whether the media uses SRTP or another appropriate protection. A general claim that a system is “secure” does not answer those questions. RFC 3261

SIP is useful to understand when setting up or troubleshooting internet calling, conferencing, or systems that connect phones to a voice service. It helps explain why a call can have a signaling problem even when the network might otherwise carry media, and why successful session setup is not proof that a call is encrypted.

For technical evaluations, relevant questions include which signaling transports and security mechanisms are supported, whether endpoints agree on compatible SDP media capabilities, how registration and routing work, and how media is protected. The standards define these protocol concerns; they do not rank products or establish a particular device as necessary to use SIP.
