On a Samsung washer, the 4E code indicates a water-supply problem: the machine is not getting water at sufficient pressure or flow. Start by checking the tap, household water supply, and inlet hose; then clean the hose’s mesh filter if needed. The code does not, by itself, identify a failed internal part.
What does 4E mean on my Samsung washer?
Samsung groups 4E and 4C as water-supply information codes. The washer has detected that water is not entering with enough force or flow. The exact code and hose arrangement can vary by model, so check your washer’s manual if its display or connections differ from the instructions here. How do I fix the 4E error?
Work through the external supply checks first. Before moving the washer or handling its hoses, power it off and unplug it. Turn off the water supply before disconnecting a hose or cleaning its filter.
- Check the water supply. Make sure the supply tap is fully open and water is available at the household supply. Samsung UK states a pressure range of 0.5–8 bar in its guidance; treat that as UK guidance and consult the exact model manual and local installation requirements.
- Inspect the inlet hose. Check for kinks, bends, pinching, blockages, or visible damage. Straighten a kinked hose. If a hose is damaged or leaking, Samsung US advises replacing it with one compatible with the washer’s model and connections; a 4E code alone does not mean a new hose is needed. - Clean the inlet mesh filter. Follow the steps below, using your model manual if the filter arrangement differs.
- Check the detergent drawer. If it has visible buildup or an obstruction, remove and clean it according to the manual, then refit it. Samsung notes that a blocked drawer can occasionally be associated with the related 4C check.
- Check hot and cold connections only if your model uses both. Confirm each hose is connected to the correct tap and inlet. Some cycles require a particular supply line; do not assume every washer has separate hot and cold inlets.
How do I clean the washer inlet filter?
- Turn off the water supply and unplug the washer.
- Disconnect the water inlet hose carefully, following the model manual if its fittings differ.
- Gently remove the mesh filter or filters and rinse them under running water. Do not force or damage the mesh.
- Reinstall the filters and reconnect the hose securely.
- Turn the water back on and check the connection for leaks before using the washer.
Samsung UK recommends cleaning the water-hose mesh filter at least twice a year. Its 4E/4C guide includes the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.

Why is my Samsung washer not filling with water?
A closed tap, inadequate household water pressure or flow, a kinked or damaged hose, or a clogged inlet mesh filter can prevent the washer from filling properly. A blocked detergent drawer can occasionally be related. On models with separate hot and cold supplies, a mismatched or unavailable line may also matter when a cycle calls for it. The code identifies a supply problem, not which of these causes applies.
