Electrical isolation breaks a direct conductive path between circuit sections while allowing information or energy to cross by another mechanism. Designers use it to reduce the risk that faults or ground-potential differences will reach people or low-voltage circuitry, and to address some noise and interference problems. The right approach depends on what must cross the barrier—signals, power, or both—and on the system’s safety and interference conditions.

What electrical isolation does

Texas Instruments defines electrical isolation as preventing unwanted direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) between two parts of a system while still enabling signal and power transfer. In practical terms, the sections have no direct conductive connection across the barrier, but a coupling mechanism carries the required signal or energy.

Isolation can help protect operators and low-voltage circuits during fault conditions, improve noise immunity, and allow circuits at different ground potentials to communicate. It is not a blanket solution to every safety or electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) problem: performance depends on the isolator, the surrounding circuit, and the frequencies and transients involved.

How the main isolation techniques work

Optocouplers: transfer signals with light

An optocoupler sends information across a galvanic barrier optically. It is a common way to isolate signals, and can suit some slower digital applications. Do not assume all optocouplers have the same speed, reliability, or cost; choose from the specifications and requirements of the application. Texas Instruments’ isolation application note discusses electrical isolation and signal transfer.

Magnetic and capacitive digital isolators: transfer digital signals across a barrier

These integrated devices use magnetic or capacitive coupling to transmit digital signals without a direct conductive connection between the two sides. The two families differ in how they couple the signal, so check the individual device’s electrical and safety specifications rather than treating them as interchangeable. Toshiba’s isolation-device safety note describes the device families and their standards context.

Isolation transformers: couple power magnetically

An isolation transformer transfers power magnetically across separated windings. Transformers can also interrupt low-frequency common-mode paths in power and signal circuits. The transformer’s interwinding capacitance still affects common-mode impedance at higher frequencies, so isolation does not necessarily eliminate high-frequency coupling. ITU-T Recommendation K.37 discusses these interference considerations. For general-purpose separating transformers and power supply units incorporating them, IEC 61558-2-1:2021 sets safety requirements and tests and is used with IEC 61558-1:2017.

Optical links: avoid a metallic signal path

Fiber-optic links carry signals without a metallic path between endpoints. They can be useful when interference coupling through signal ports is a concern. ITU-T K.37 describes optical components and fiber links as ways to avoid high- and low-frequency interference coupling via signal ports; that does not make them a universal fix for EMC issues elsewhere in the system.

How to choose an isolation approach

Start with the job the barrier must do, then compare actual device data and the applicable safety requirements. No technique is best for every design.

  1. Define what crosses. Decide whether the barrier must carry digital or other signals, power, or both. A signal isolator alone does not supply isolated power.
  2. Specify the signal. Record the required data rate, channel count, and channel directions. Verify these against the device’s limits and timing specifications.
  3. Describe the electrical environment. Identify expected voltage differences, transients, and common-mode interference. Compare isolation and transient ratings with the system’s requirements.
  4. Check implementation constraints. Account for package and board space, power needs, and any supporting isolated supply or optical hardware.
  5. Identify the end-equipment safety standard. Choose an isolation component appropriate for the equipment, use, jurisdiction, and implementation. Component-level compliance by itself does not demonstrate that the finished equipment complies.

For example, the Texas Instruments ISO7761 is a six-channel digital isolator. Its product page lists channel-direction variants, data-rate and propagation-delay information, isolation ratings, transient immunity, and other electrical and physical specifications. Those are useful comparison fields, not evidence that this part is suitable for a particular design.

These references do not determine which standard or edition applies to a specific product. Analog Devices distinguishes standards applying directly to isolation components from standards governing the equipment that uses them; component compliance alone is not end-product compliance. Treat that distinction as vendor guidance and consult the relevant standards for regulated equipment. Analog Devices’ safety-standards overview explains the difference.

Why isolation may not solve every interference problem

Isolation interrupts a direct conductive path, but coupling can still occur through other mechanisms. In particular, transformer capacitance between primary and secondary affects common-mode impedance at higher frequencies. ITU-T K.37 also cautions that purely capacitive measures are generally not satisfactory for low-frequency interference. Assess the actual frequency range and signal paths rather than assuming that adding an isolation component resolves all EMC or safety concerns.
