Underdog is an invite-only AI assistant beta, not a broadly available product. At launch, TechCrunch reported support for Mac and Windows PCs, on-device model inference, and encrypted keys for accounts users authorize it to access. Those features make local processing central to its privacy pitch, but they do not establish that every data flow stays on the device or that the product has passed an independent security audit.
What launched, and who can use it?
TechCrunch reporter Julie Bort reported on October 6, 2026, that Sigil Wen had launched an invite-only beta of Underdog on Monday. The beta ran on Macs and Windows PCs at the time of the report. Linux, iPhone, and Android versions were described as coming soon; the report did not say they were available.
Underdog is made by Conway Research. TechCrunch reported that the company’s backers include Andreessen Horowitz, Khosla Ventures, Hummingbird, SV Angel, Anthology Fund—a partnership between Menlo Ventures and Anthropic—and angel investors including Stripe co-founder Patrick Collison, Vercel founder Guillermo Rauch, Noam Brown, and Deedy Das. These are details reported in connection with the launch, not evidence of the product’s privacy or performance.
What does Underdog actually keep on the device?
According to TechCrunch, Underdog runs its AI model on the user’s device. Wen built Husky, the inference engine used by the assistant, and says it moves less data between a computer’s main chip and graphics chip than competing on-device engines. The launch report offers no comparative measurements or independent test of that efficiency claim.

TechCrunch also reports that Underdog encrypts keys to email and other accounts users authorize it to access. That is a reported security feature, but it does not by itself explain what information integrations send or receive, what data may leave the device, or how the system behaves in every situation. The article provides no full threat model, data-flow analysis, or independent security audit.
So “most private” is best understood as the launch headline’s characterization, not a verified ranking. The reported use of local inference and encrypted account keys supports a privacy-focused design claim; it does not prove that every action and integration remains local or establish privacy relative to Instinct, Muse, or other assistants.

What model does the beta use, and how capable is it?
TechCrunch reports that the beta uses a 27-billion-parameter reasoning model fine-tuned from Qwen3.8-27B. Wen says it compares favorably with Claude Opus 4.6 in some benchmarks and can handle everyday assistant tasks such as shopping research and answering math homework questions.
The report does not name the benchmarks, provide scores, describe test conditions, or present an independent comparison. The Claude comparison is therefore Wen’s claim, not established evidence that Underdog matches or outperforms Claude Opus 4.6. The article also does not provide a benchmark table from which readers could assess the claim.

How does Underdog plan to make money?
TechCrunch reports that Underdog will be free at first and will not carry ads. Wen says local inference lowers the company’s costs. The reported planned revenue source is a small percentage of payments the assistant makes through Stripe’s payment rails, described as similar to an interchange fee.
The launch report gives no fee rate, eligibility rules, terms, or date for payment features. This is a proposed monetization model, not a fee program established as currently operating.

What is still unverified?
- Privacy and security: No independent audit, full threat model, or data-flow analysis is provided in the launch report.
- Performance: No named benchmarks, scores, test conditions, or independent comparisons are published.
- Hardware requirements: The report does not state minimum CPU, GPU, memory, or storage requirements for Mac or Windows.
- Availability: Linux and mobile versions are future plans in the report, with no ship dates or feature details.
- Payments: The proposed Stripe-based fee has no published rate, terms, or launch date in the report.
For a reader deciding whether to trust or try the beta, the practical distinction is between what the launch report describes and what it verifies: local model inference and encrypted account keys are reported product features; comprehensive privacy guarantees and comparative performance remain unsubstantiated in that account.
