Which Ultra Street Fighter IV rollback mod should you use?
For a new setup, start with SF4Enhanced’s repository notice: it identifies Ember as the community standard and directs players there. SF4Enhanced’s final build is 1.2.1. Its public lobby servers remain online for existing users, but the project gives no guarantee about how long they will remain available. Ember’s v0.9.9 release is dated 27 September 2026.
These are unofficial community modifications for the Steam edition of Ultra Street Fighter IV, not changes to the console editions or a Capcom patch. You need the Steam game to use either project.

What rollback and relay fallback can—and cannot—do
Rollback netcode predicts inputs to keep play responsive when players’ inputs arrive at different times, then corrects the game state when late inputs arrive. Its benefit depends on the connection and the game’s ability to reconcile those states; it does not remove the physical delay caused by distance or cure packet loss, unstable internet, or every desynchronization.

SF4Enhanced documents direct peer-to-peer connections with automatic relay fallback. A relay can help when a direct connection is unavailable, but the project lists its relay servers in Spain and Germany. Players far from those locations may experience higher ping when relayed; direct connectivity can avoid that routing when available. The documentation also describes adjustable input delay and server selection.
Ember’s release notes describe ongoing fixes and a pause-and-resume-or-end response to brief interruptions, not a promise that all matches will recover cleanly. Expect results to vary by connection and opponent rather than assuming that installing rollback makes every bout lag-free.

What you need to set up a match
For SF4Enhanced
- Use the Steam version of Ultra Street Fighter IV and install the same SF4Enhanced build as your opponent.
- Follow the online-play instructions for that exact build. The current repository instructions specify Fixed frame pacing on both PCs. Older release notes used a different frame-rate setting, so do not carry an old setting forward without checking its version.
- Choose a connection and server option with your opponent. Direct peer-to-peer may avoid the Spain- or Germany-based relay route when direct connectivity works; relay fallback may be used otherwise.
For Ember v0.9.9
- Confirm that each player has Windows 10 or later on x64, the Steam game, and the Microsoft Visual C++ x86 runtime.
- Have every room participant—including spectators—run the same Ember build.
- Use the room’s private invitations and spectator options as needed. On Linux under Proton or Wine, consult the release notes for the documented limitations and manual update steps rather than assuming the Windows process applies.
How strong is the evidence that play is better?
SF4Enhanced’s 2026 release notes report a round-transition test in which 19,356 frames were checked before a fix and 17,106 afterward; the project reports 112 divergences before the fix and zero after. It says all 112 earlier divergences happened at round resets and that the fix was confirmed on two machines over a real connection. These are developer-reported results, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee for other setups.
Player reactions reported by Time Extension were mixed: some players praised the mods, while others said lag was worse than with the native game. Those reports are anecdotal, not controlled comparisons, so they do not establish how either mod will perform for a particular pair of players.

Were the mods made using Claude?
Time Extension reported that GitHub lists Anthropic’s Claude among contributors to both projects. That supports saying Claude received contributor credit; it does not establish that Claude independently created either mod or that the developers used no other tools or expertise.
The projects also share technical foundations. SF4Enhanced credits Anthony Danducci’s upstream sf4e work for the reverse-engineered engine API, save-state system, GGPO integration, session protocol, launcher, and overlay. Its repository also credits Ember with first working out much of the online-play analysis and fixes later ported into SF4Enhanced. They are distinct projects, but not wholly unrelated inventions.
