UI screenshot testing catches visual regressions by comparing a current page or component render with an approved reference image, called a baseline. A difference is a signal to investigate, not proof of a bug: review the changed pixels, decide whether the change is intended, and update the baseline only after you understand it.
How screenshot regression testing works
A test renders a page or component under defined conditions, captures an image, and compares it with a saved reference. In Playwright Test, await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() performs that comparison. The first run creates a reference image; review it and commit it with the test project. Later runs compare new captures against that baseline.
Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits until two consecutive screenshots produce the same result before comparing the final capture. This stabilization helps, but it does not make a changing page deterministic by itself. Tests still need controlled inputs and handling for content that changes between runs.
Start with a repeatable Playwright test
This TypeScript example assumes a Playwright Test project is already configured and the application is available at the configured base URL. It fixes the viewport, navigates to a page, waits for a meaningful element, and captures a full-page screenshot.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
await page.goto('/');
await page.getByRole('main').waitFor();
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home-page.png', {
fullPage: true,
});
});
- Run the test once in the environment you intend to use for baseline creation. Playwright writes the reference screenshot for the assertion.
- Open and inspect the generated image. Confirm that it shows the intended page state, viewport, and content before accepting it.
- Add the reviewed baseline to version control alongside the test.
- Run the test again after a code change. Inspect any reported diff in context before deciding whether the UI regressed or the change is intentional.
The assertion can also target a locator when a component-level image is more useful than a full page: await expect(page.getByTestId('pricing-card')).toHaveScreenshot('pricing-card.png'). Give captures stable names so the test and its reference are easy to identify.
Choose diff tolerances for the UI, not by habit
Playwright provides controls such as maxDiffPixels and a threshold for screenshot comparisons. A tolerance can prevent insignificant rendering variation from failing a test, but a loose tolerance can also conceal a real spacing, color, or layout change. There is no universally correct threshold: choose one based on which areas matter, and inspect the resulting images to ensure it does not hide meaningful changes.
Start with strict comparisons for stable pages, then relax only where you can explain the noise. If a test needs a broad tolerance to pass, first investigate whether the capture conditions or page content are unstable.
Control the conditions that produce each image
Screenshot output can vary with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep baseline generation and CI comparison in a consistent environment. Fix the viewport and test data, wait for relevant content, and account for volatile elements such as timestamps or rotating content. Playwright documents applying a stylesheet during capture to suppress or adjust such content.

Keep viewport and device pixel ratio aligned
Viewport dimensions and device pixel ratio (DPR) both affect the captured image. A mismatch can create widespread diffs even if the interface looks otherwise identical. Chromatic documents that a DPR 2.0 snapshot compared with a DPR 1.0 baseline is flagged as changed. Review browser, device, or capture-setting upgrades before mass-approving new references.
Wait for the right state
Wait for the element or page state that makes the UI ready for comparison; a fixed delay alone may be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one. For animated or time-dependent regions, use a capture stylesheet or otherwise make the tested state predictable. If content is still moving between captures, investigate the page behavior rather than assuming the assertion’s stabilization step has solved it.
Keep inputs stable
- Use the same test data and application state when generating and comparing a baseline.
- Set a known viewport and use the same browser and rendering environment in baseline work and CI.
- Identify content that changes independently of the code under test, then suppress or control it for the capture.
- When a dependency or capture environment changes, inspect the diff before accepting new baselines.
Review diffs and maintain baselines deliberately
A pixel diff tells you that the rendered image changed. It cannot decide whether the change was a desired design update or an unintended regression. Review the changed region in context, check whether the change matches the code or design intent, and only then accept a new baseline. Chromatic describes saving each snapshot and comparing it with the prior baseline, with metadata associated with test and build context.
Baseline updates are part of maintaining the test suite, not housekeeping to do automatically whenever a test fails. A mistaken approval can turn a regression into the new expected result.

Local Playwright assertions or hosted visual review?
These are different workflow choices, not interchangeable labels. Playwright screenshot assertions keep reference screenshots with the test project and offer configurable comparison thresholds. Hosted visual testing with Chromatic captures snapshots, compares them with baselines, provides a hosted review environment, and integrates with Playwright end-to-end tests.
| Consideration | Playwright screenshot assertions | Chromatic hosted visual testing |
|---|---|---|
| Baseline and comparison | Reference screenshots and later comparisons are managed with the test project; thresholds are configurable. | Visual snapshots are compared against baselines in its hosted workflow. |
| Review workflow | Decide how your team stores, reviews, and approves baseline changes. | Provides a hosted review environment; snapshots carry test and build context. |
| Integration | Screenshot assertions run as part of Playwright Test. | Chromatic documents integration with Playwright end-to-end tests. |
| Environment and coverage questions | Plan CI consistency, browser and viewport coverage, and baseline-file management. | Check capture consistency, review needs, integration fit, and current plan limits and cost with the provider; those details are not established here. |
Choose based on where your team wants rendering, baseline management, and review to happen. If you already run Playwright and want references managed in the project, local assertions are a direct starting point. If stakeholders need a hosted place to review snapshot changes, consider a hosted workflow and verify its current limits and cost before adopting it.
Troubleshooting visual test failures
The first run creates a screenshot instead of passing
This is the baseline-creation step. Inspect the image for the intended state, then add the reviewed reference to version control. Do not accept it without checking what the test actually captured.
Many unrelated regions changed at once
Check whether the baseline and current run used different operating systems, browser versions, headless settings, viewport dimensions, or DPR. A capture-density mismatch alone can flag an otherwise identical UI. Restore consistent settings or intentionally regenerate and review baselines after a planned environment change.

The test is intermittent in CI
Look for changing data, late-loading content, animations, or environmental differences between baseline creation and CI. Wait for the relevant UI state, stabilize inputs, and suppress volatile regions where appropriate. Raising a diff tolerance without finding the source can mask regressions.
The test fails after a design change
Inspect the diff and compare the changed area with the intended design or code change. If it is expected, review and update the baseline; if it is not, fix the UI. A failed comparison alone does not classify the change.
Changing the threshold makes the test pass but feels unsafe
Reduce the tolerance and identify the specific variation causing noise. Keep the tolerance tied to the visual areas that matter, and verify the diff does not hide meaningful layout or styling changes.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Frequently Asked Questions
Does a screenshot diff prove that the UI is broken?
No. It establishes that rendered pixels changed; a person must determine whether the change is intended or a regression.
Can I use ScreenshotNeo as the visual regression baseline system?
ScreenshotNeo captures images, while baseline comparison and approval remain part of your testing or review workflow. It does not replace Playwright’s screenshot assertion or a hosted snapshot review system.
