Board Game Arena is another place to browse browser-playable board and card games, but check each game’s player count and invite options before choosing it.
Quick comparison: how you invite a friend
| Service | Game format | Invitation method | Timing or setup detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chess.com | Chess, with game type and time control options | Challenge a friend from Play a Friend or their profile, use a username shortcut URL, or choose Challenge Link in the live-play interface. | Live challenges need the friend to be online to accept and expire after a few minutes; Daily challenges can be accepted later. |
| Codenames Online | Browser versions of Codenames and Codenames Duet | Create a virtual room and share its URL. | The cited page describes inviting friends but does not establish exact player-count rules. |
| PlayingCards.io | Card and tabletop-style games | Choose a game, create a room, and share the room code. | Moves synchronize, and each player has a private hand area for concealed cards. The guide does not establish which games are strictly for two players. |
| Board Game Arena | A broad catalog of browser-adapted board and card games | Check the selected game’s own page for invitation details. | The catalog alone does not establish that every game is for two players or supports a direct share link. |
Chess.com: choose a live or Daily challenge
Chess.com documents several ways to start a game with a friend: use the Play a Friend screen, open the friend’s profile, or use the username shortcut at chess.com/play/username. Its live-play page also offers a Challenge Link option. See the Chess.com guide to playing a friend and the live chess page.
Use Live when you are both ready
A Live challenge requires the other player to be online to accept and expires after a few minutes. Choose it when you and your friend can start around the same time.
Use Daily when the other player may respond later
A Daily challenge stays available for the opponent to accept later, so the two of you do not need to coordinate a simultaneous start.

Codenames Online: share a virtual-room URL
Codenames Online describes itself as a free browser implementation of Codenames and Codenames Duet. Create a virtual room, then share its URL with your friends. Pick the version that suits the group: classic Codenames or the Duet format. The page explains the room invitation but does not establish exact player-count rules, so do not assume this is a strictly two-player game. Details are on the Codenames Online page.

PlayingCards.io: share a room code
PlayingCards.io’s quick-start flow is to choose a game, create a room, and share the room code with your friend. Game movements are synchronized, while a private hand area keeps each player’s cards hidden from the other. That makes it useful when you want a card or tabletop-style game with concealed information.
