Twitch announced the change on June 20, 2023; its current help page lists seven label categories and explains how to apply and manage them.
What happened to Twitch’s Mature Content toggle?
The former one-setting toggle is no longer the way Twitch classifies mature streams. Streamers now select one or more Content Classification Labels that describe relevant themes in their content. Twitch says the labels specify which otherwise permitted content needs a label; the 2023 update did not change the Community Guidelines. Twitch’s June 20, 2023 announcement introduced six categories. The current Twitch help page lists seven, adding Politics and Sensitive Social Issues.

What are the current Twitch content labels?
Twitch’s current help page defines these seven categories. A label describes relevant themes; it is not permission to stream content that violates Twitch’s rules.
- Mature-Rated Games: Games rated Mature or considered less suitable for a younger audience. Selecting an ESRB Mature-rated game as the stream category automatically applies this label.
- Sexual Themes: Content focused on sexualized activities, sexual topics, or experiences.
- Drugs, Intoxication, or Excessive Tobacco Use: Excessive tobacco glorification or promotion, any marijuana consumption or use, legal drug- or alcohol-induced intoxication, and discussions of illegal drugs.
- Violent and Graphic Depictions: Simulations or depictions of realistic violence, gore, extreme injury, or death.
- Significant Profanity or Vulgarity: Prolonged and repeated obscenities, profanities, or vulgarities, especially when they are a regular part of speech.
- Politics and Sensitive Social Issues: Discussions or debates about politics or sensitive social issues, including elections, civic integrity, military conflict, and civil rights.
- Gambling: Participating in or promoting online or in-person gambling, poker, or fantasy sports involving real money.
These descriptions are summaries, not exhaustive tests for every situation. Check Twitch’s current Content Classification Labels guidance for edge cases and the applicable rules.

How streamers apply or change labels
- Open Stream Manager and open the Edit Stream Info panel.
- Find the Content Classification field and select the labels that apply to the stream.
- Review the selected labels before going live. Twitch carries them over to later streams until you change them.
- If the content changes during a broadcast, update the selected labels during the livestream.
If you select an ESRB Mature-rated game as your stream category, Twitch automatically applies the Mature-Rated Game label. The other relevant labels still need to reflect the content of your broadcast.
What viewers see—and how they control labeled content
Twitch says viewers typically encounter an interstitial on the channel page and must consent before watching a labeled stream. Three categories instead appear as an overlay in the video player once the stream loads: Mature-Rated Games, Significant Profanity or Vulgarity, and Politics and Sensitive Social Issues.

Viewers can adjust Content Display Preferences to hide labeled categories from recommendations, category browsing, and search. Those hide settings do not apply to followed streamers, and labeled content remains viewable when someone visits a channel directly. Twitch also says content labeled Sexual Themes is blurred by default for all users. See Twitch’s instructions for customizing content for the viewer controls.
What happens if a stream is mislabeled?
Twitch says inaccurate labeling may lead to a warning and the correct label being applied to the stream. Repeated violations can result in a label applied at the channel level for a set duration. Twitch says incorrect labeling does not result in account suspension. A channel-level label applied for more than seven days may be appealed through Twitch’s Appeals Portal.

How the launch-era list differs from today’s
The June 20, 2023 launch announcement described six labels. Twitch’s current help page includes Politics and Sensitive Social Issues as a seventh category. Use the current help page for today’s full list rather than treating the original announcement as the complete present-day policy.
Discovery also needs a current, qualified explanation. Twitch’s launch post said the update itself was not intended to change discovery visibility, but current viewer preferences can hide selected labeled streams from recommendations, browsing, and search, subject to the exceptions described above.
