Will it fit your iPad and mounting surface?
Fit is governed by measurements, not just the iPad family name. Twelve South’s product specifications give the device clip a maximum width of 220 mm (8.68 inches) and a minimum device height of 127 mm (5 inches). The shelf clamp fits surfaces from 10 to 34 mm (0.4 to 1.4 inches) thick, and the arm extends to 15 inches. Measure the iPad with its case on if you intend to leave the case fitted.

- Clamp location: Check that the shelf, desk edge, or other mounting surface falls within the 10–34 mm clamp range and leaves room for the clamp to attach securely.
- Reach: The arm’s specified maximum extension is 15 inches; actual positioning depends on where and how the base or clamp is mounted.
The manufacturer lists all generations of iPad, iPad Air, iPad Pro, and iPad mini, along with selected iPhone generations. For iPad mini and iPhone, it says to orient the clip vertically. Charging while mounted
Twelve South’s product FAQ says the stand does not block the charging ports. That addresses physical access to the port; it does not establish that every cable connector or accessory will fit in every mounted position. Twelve South product FAQ
Keyboard cases and added weight
A buyer review displayed on Twelve South’s product page reports that the added weight of a keyboard case made the iPad difficult to hold in position. The company’s response agrees that extra weight affects balance. This is a customer report and company response, not a controlled test; consider the total device-and-case weight if using a keyboard case.

How second generation differs from the original
Twelve South says first-generation HoverBar Duo has the same arm and clip, but changing between the base and clamp requires a hex tool. The second-generation QuickSwitch tab is intended to simplify that swap. The manufacturer described Gen 1 as $20 less when the page was accessed; the actual prices and availability of either generation may change. Is the HoverBar Duo a good choice for a desk?
The Duo makes most sense when both mounting options have a job: for example, a weighted base for ordinary desk use and a clamp on a shelf or counter where a base would take up space. Its articulated arm also offers more reach and positioning flexibility than a simple folding tabletop prop. If you mainly want a lightweight stand to carry and set on a table, compare the Twelve South Compass Pro. The manufacturer describes Compass Pro as folding flat and offering three stable angles. What do the “brilliant” endorsements actually establish?
Twelve South’s product page reproduces favorable comments from Daily Tekk and Tom’s Guide, including a Daily Tekk line saying “99% of people should buy” the stand and a Tom’s Guide description of it as a “must-have iPad Pro accessory.” These are attributed opinions displayed by the manufacturer, not measured findings or evidence that the Duo is right for every iPad owner. The more concrete case for it is the included choice of a desktop base and a clamp mount.
