In late 2023, macOS security researcher Patrick Wardle analyzed a Turtle ransomware specimen found on VirusTotal. That sample could encrypt certain files, but its delivery route was unknown, it did not persist, and Wardle reported no infections in the wild at the time. The findings describe one historical sample—not every Turtle build or today’s macOS threat landscape.
What was the Turtle macOS ransomware sample?
Wardle’s November 30, 2023 analysis began after a researcher alerted him to a possible Mac ransomware file on VirusTotal. The related archive contained binaries for multiple operating systems, including macOS. The analysis did not establish how the sample would reach a victim’s Mac.
At the time, Wardle reported no infections in the wild in the context of his analysis. He also noted that 24 of 62 antivirus engines flagged the VirusTotal sample. That was a snapshot from its discovery period, not a current detection rate or a measure of how widespread the malware was.
What did the analyzed sample do to Mac files?
The specimen was designed to encrypt files in its working directory. Wardle observed it reading a file, encrypting its contents with AES in CTR mode, renaming the file, and writing the encrypted content. In the analyzed build, the targeted extensions were .doc, .docx, and .txt; encrypted files received the hard-coded suffix .TURTLERANSv0.

Those details apply to the examined build. They should not be treated as a fixed target list or naming convention for every version of Turtle.
Why was the sample’s practical risk assessed as limited?
It did not establish persistence
Wardle’s analysis says the specimen did not persist. That means the examined sample was not shown to arrange to keep running after a restart; it does not establish how a different build might behave.

Its signature and notarization status presented a reported barrier
SecurityWeek’s December 1, 2023 summary reported that the analyzed file had an ad-hoc signature and was not notarized by Apple. The article said Gatekeeper would block it unless it arrived through an exploit or a victim specifically allowed it. This is a historical assessment of that file, not a guarantee that Gatekeeper blocks all malware or that current macOS controls behave identically.
The analysis found no known infections at the time
Wardle’s report of no in-the-wild infections was limited to the period and context of his analysis. It does not prove that no one was ever infected, and it says nothing about later Turtle versions or current activity.

Could files encrypted by this sample be decrypted?
For the specimen he examined, Wardle assessed that the use of symmetric encryption made the ransomed files recoverable. SecurityWeek also summarized his view that the key could be recovered and decryption was not difficult. That is a sample-specific finding, not a promise of recovery in an actual incident: a different build or another ransomware family may use different encryption and key handling.
What is known about Turtle’s operators?
No specific actor attribution was made in the contemporary analysis. SecurityWeek noted Chinese-language strings in the file, including a phrase translated as “encrypt files,” but that alone does not establish the operators’ identity, location, or affiliation. A 2024 IT-ISAC report labels Turtle a LockBit variant, but this differs from the primary analyst’s non-attribution; it should not be treated as settled attribution.

How to prepare for ransomware on a Mac
These are general ransomware-resilience practices, not Turtle-specific fixes. The IT-ISAC report recommends measures including:
- Keep frequent backups offline or otherwise isolated from systems that ransomware could reach, and test that you can restore from them.
- Apply security patches to operating systems and software.
- Test incident-response plans so people know how to report and contain a suspected incident.
- Segment networks to limit how far an intrusion can spread.
- Train staff to recognize phishing attempts.
- Use multifactor authentication (MFA) where available.
If you suspect an active infection, treat it as an incident rather than relying on the analyzed sample’s reported recoverability. Follow your organization’s response process or seek qualified incident-response help, and preserve relevant evidence.
