In an October 14, 2004 post, Hackaday pointed to SapAVR, a project described as adding a second microprocessor for higher-level commands, nonvolatile storage, and a PC interface. That gives a computer a way to send the robot commands; it does not establish that the modification replaces the robot’s motion system or provides direct motor control.
What the SapAVR modification adds
Hackaday’s brief post, published October 14, 2004, describes SapAVR as adding a second microprocessor to take over control of the robot. Its listed capabilities include nonvolatile storage and a PC interface. The post is a pointer to a modification, not a complete installation guide or evidence of a currently supported product.
The extra processor is best understood as a higher-level command interface. A computer can issue commands through the added electronics, while the Robosapien continues to carry out its built-in actions. The available description does not show that SapAVR replaces the robot’s original motion-control electronics or makes its motors independently addressable.
How computer control can work
A separate Carnegie Mellon University project illustrates one way to connect a Robosapien to a computer: it used a BasicX processor, a Bluetooth adapter, and a Java API to invoke the robot’s command set. This is an example of computer-mediated command sending, not evidence that every SapAVR build uses those components. The CMU project describes commands that select existing programmed actions; it does not directly control the motors. See CMU’s Robosapien Hacking project page.

In practical terms, a computer interface can make it easier to trigger or sequence available actions. It does not automatically create new movements or fine-grained control: those depend on what the robot’s own electronics and firmware support.
Historical SapAVR components—and the compatibility caveat
An archival copy of a SapAVR document surfaced with references to an AT90S2313 AVR processor, a MAX232 or MAX233 serial-interface option, and a 20-pin socket. These details are useful for understanding the project’s era, but they are not a verified bill of materials for a build today. The archival copy was surfaced through Scribd, and its component list should be treated cautiously.

Before attempting a reproduction, verify the target Robosapien revision and the electrical and software details of the specific design. In particular, do not assume that an old serial interface, processor, voltage arrangement, or firmware toolchain will work with a different robot revision or modern computer. The available sources do not establish plug-and-play compatibility, current part availability, or a ready-made kit.
Processor interface or external infrared commands?
Computer control can be approached in two broad ways: add electronics that pass commands into the robot, or have an external device generate infrared commands. They differ in where the interface hardware sits and how the computer communicates with it.

Neither route should be mistaken for a guaranteed low-level control system. The documented CMU example is limited to combinations of the robot’s preprogrammed actions; the sources do not establish a universal method for direct motor control.
