Its base chassis is 1U with 12 hot-swap NVMe bays, but its capacity figures describe different configurations: TrueNAS’s January 2026 announcement claims “1.4 PB of NVMe in 1U,” while its February 2026 data sheet lists 3.6 PB maximum all-flash capacity and 7 PB maximum capacity across configurations.
What the TrueNAS R60 is
TrueNAS announced the R60 on January 26, 2026, as a high-density NVMe platform intended to keep AI, high-performance computing (HPC), and analytics systems supplied with data. The company also names AI training and inference, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), MLOps, data science, and high-resolution video as target uses. These are workload targets, not guarantees that every deployment will achieve a particular performance level. TrueNAS’s announcement describes its design and intended uses.
The February 2026 platform data sheet describes a 1U appliance with 12 front-loading, hot-swap 2.5-inch NVMe bays. It supports enterprise Gen4 and Gen5 NVMe SSD media in listed capacities from 7.6 TB through 122 TB. The R60 is therefore compact at the chassis level; maximum-capacity configurations can also involve expansion shelves and a larger rack footprint. The R60 platform data sheet provides the hardware details.
How to interpret the R60 capacity figures
The headline numbers should not be treated as three descriptions of the same installed configuration. TrueNAS’s January announcement uses the phrase “1.4 PB of NVMe in 1U.” Its February data sheet separately lists 3.6 PB as maximum all-flash capacity and 7 PB as maximum capacity. The available materials do not explain exactly how the January 1.4 PB configuration maps to the February maximum figures, so compare them by source and label rather than assuming a direct like-for-like relationship.

| Figure | What TrueNAS says it describes | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 1.4 PB | NVMe in 1U | Wording from TrueNAS’s January 26, 2026 launch announcement; the announcement does not establish the configuration mapping to the later data-sheet maxima. Announcement |
| 3.6 PB | Maximum all-flash capacity | TrueNAS’s February 2026 R60 platform data sheet. Data sheet |
| 7 PB | Maximum capacity | TrueNAS’s February 2026 R60 platform data sheet; this is a separate maximum from its stated all-flash figure. Data sheet |
Capacity alone does not establish how much data a system can hold for a particular workload. When evaluating a quote, confirm the proposed drive and shelf configuration, usable capacity, and any data-reduction assumptions rather than treating a headline maximum as guaranteed usable space.
What TrueNAS claims about performance
TrueNAS publishes a maximum throughput figure of up to 60 GB/s for the R60 on its product overview and in its launch announcement. The reviewed vendor materials do not provide an independent benchmark, workload, or test methodology for that claim. It is a vendor-published specification, not evidence that an individual installation will sustain 60 GB/s for its workload. The TrueNAS R-Series overview and launch announcement present the figure.

The announcement associates the system with TrueNAS 25.10, “Goldeye,” and describes Parallel ARC eviction for multithreaded workloads and NVMe over Fabrics over TCP and RDMA. It also claims a 20–25% throughput improvement in mixed environments from the caching change. That improvement is a TrueNAS claim; the announcement does not provide detailed test conditions or an independent result. Treat it accordingly when estimating performance for a specific application.
Hardware, networking, and expansion
TrueNAS’s February 2026 R60 platform data sheet lists the following platform specifications. They are vendor-published figures and options, not independent measurements.

| Area | R60 specification in the February 2026 data sheet |
|---|---|
| Chassis and drive bays | 1U; 12 front-loading, hot-swap 2.5-inch NVMe bays |
| Processor | 16–32 cores; 32–64 threads |
| Memory | 192–384 GB DDR5 at 6400 MT/s |
| Networking options | 1× or 2× 400GbE, plus 2× or 4× 200/100/25GbE options |
| Expansion | Up to two NVMe expansion shelves and four SAS expansion shelves |
| Power | Dual redundant hot-swappable power supplies; typical HA power draw of 350–600 W |
The R-Series model comparison also lists 12 NVMe drives and 192–384 GB DRAM per controller for the R60. Its overview describes a platform height range of 1U–17U, up to 7 PB capacity, and expansion by up to two NVMe or four SAS shelves. The 1U figure is the R60 chassis description; the broader height range reflects the platform and expansion footprint. The January 2026 R-Series models sheet compares the R60 with other models.

The headline capacity and throughput figures are not enough to determine whether an R60 fits a deployment. Use a proposed, fully configured system and the intended workload to compare:

- Usable capacity: Confirm installed media, expansion shelves, and data-reduction assumptions behind the quoted usable figure.
- Workload performance: Ask for relevant results under the intended I/O pattern, including throughput and latency; a maximum-throughput claim alone does not establish either for a particular application.
- Network path: Match the offered 400GbE or 200/100/25GbE options to the storage clients, switches, and network design. The cited materials do not qualify specific third-party components.
- Space and power: Account for the rack footprint of the complete shelf configuration, not only the 1U base appliance, and check power requirements for the proposed system.
- Availability and software: Confirm the controller and high-availability design, supported protocols, and integrations needed by the deployment.
- Drive support and service: Ask TrueNAS or an authorized reseller to confirm the approved drive configuration and support implications before purchasing SSDs separately.
- Commercial terms: Pricing, lead times, and regional availability are not stated in the cited product materials. The R-Series page provides a quote/contact route for prospective buyers.
There are no apples-to-apples competitor tests or current prices in the cited official materials. Compare fully configured proposals against the same workload, usable-capacity basis, networking, expansion, availability, power, support, rack space, and price—not just headline petabytes or throughput.
