That is a potential headwind, not proof that yields caused Bitcoin’s rally or that 5% predicts a price drop.
What happened to Bitcoin and Treasury yields?
Cointelegraph reported on Oct. 5 that Bitcoin gained 43% in Q3 2026, describing it as the asset’s best third quarter since 2017. CoinDesk’s Sep. 30 live coverage put the gain at about 44%, conditional on Bitcoin closing the quarter near $84,000. The reports differ slightly in timing and rounding; neither figure should be treated here as an independently verified calculation. CoinDesk also reported that the 10-year Treasury yield reached 5.30% on Sep. 30. These are dated figures, not live market quotes.
Cointelegraph’s Oct. 5 report and CoinDesk’s Sep. 30 live coverage describe the tension: Bitcoin had rallied sharply even as the return available from government bonds rose above 5%.
Why can a 5% Treasury yield pressure Bitcoin?
The proposed channel is opportunity cost. A Treasury security can pay interest; Bitcoin does not. If investors can receive a relatively high nominal yield from government debt, they may require a stronger reason to keep money in a volatile asset with no income stream. Cointelegraph quoted Delphi Digital’s weekly newsletter: “When a government bond pays over 5% risk-free, every risky asset has to work harder to deserve the money.”

That is an argument about relative appeal, not a mechanical pricing rule. A yield above 5% may raise the hurdle for Bitcoin or add pressure to risk appetite, but the reports do not establish that Treasury yields alone determine Bitcoin’s price or that 5% is a reliable threshold for predicting its direction.
Why might Bitcoin still rise when rates are high?
The competing explanation in Cointelegraph’s coverage is the “debasement trade” thesis: some investors buy Bitcoin as a hedge against government borrowing and currency expansion that they believe could erode the dollar’s purchasing power. Vanessa Grellet, managing partner at Arche Capital, said “the debasement trade doesn’t require low interest rates.” In that view, concern about the long-term value of money can support Bitcoin even when bonds offer attractive nominal yields.

The two arguments can operate at once. Higher yields can make bonds more competitive, while concerns about debt or currency value can support demand for Bitcoin. The cited coverage does not measure how much either force contributed to Q3 returns, so neither should be presented as the sole explanation for the rally.
How could Fed expectations change the pressure?
Bond yields reflect market expectations as well as current policy. Cointelegraph reported that weaker-than-expected September U.S. jobs data reduced expectations of another Federal Reserve rate hike in October. That shift could ease the rate backdrop in the short term, but expectations are not a confirmed Fed decision. The report also quoted New York Fed President John Williams: “With the policy action we took at our September meeting, there is no need for urgency.”

For readers tracking the competing explanations, the useful signals are the nominal Treasury yield and, where available, real yields; changes in expected Fed policy; inflation and labor-market data that can move rate expectations; and Bitcoin-specific demand narratives such as the debasement trade. The two reports cited here do not provide a complete primary dataset for evaluating those factors together.

“Threaten” describes a plausible market headwind: a higher bond yield can increase the opportunity cost of holding Bitcoin. It does not mean Bitcoin’s Q3 gain has been erased, that a reversal is certain, or that a yield crossing 5% automatically sends Bitcoin lower. The reported return and yield figures come from financial-news coverage, and the sources do not independently establish a causal link between them.
