You can turn a picture into a brick mosaic with APP Helmond’s Brickaizer, the software formerly called Legoaizer. It helps translate an image into a stud-based design, adjust its size and colors, and export a plan or image. Its documented photo-library mode can also match the design to photographs of real bricks. Brickaizer is design software, not a physical kit; LEGO Mosaic Maker 40179 is a separate, ready-to-build option.
What happened to Legoaizer?
Legoaizer is the former name of APP Helmond’s mosaic-design application. The company says it renamed the product after legal threats over the old name’s perceived association with LEGO. In its rename notice, APP Helmond wrote, “The good news is: the application hasn’t changed a bit!” That is the vendor’s statement at the time, not an independent guarantee that every control or compatibility detail stayed the same.
The current product is called Brickaizer. APP Helmond’s product page lists version 8.0.48, dated 5 April 2026. Because the picture-mosaic tutorial describes the older Legoaizer interface, control names and steps may differ in the current release.
How the picture-to-mosaic process works
A mosaic is a pixelated version of a two-dimensional image recreated with bricks, as BrickLink Studio’s help puts it. The software reduces the image to a grid and maps the grid’s colors to available parts. A finer grid can preserve more detail, but also means more studs and pieces to assemble.

APP Helmond’s historical Legoaizer tutorial documents two approaches to representing parts: generate them from a brick-color table, or use photographs of actual bricks and plates. The latter can create a preview based on the appearance and pattern of photographed pieces. It takes longer because the software compares candidate brick images with the requested source colors.
Use the built-in brick-picture library
The tutorial says Legoaizer includes a RealBrickPictures library with 177 images covering 11 basic shapes and 17 commonly used colors. These are counts stated by APP Helmond; the tutorial does not give a publication year. To use this image-based approach, its instructions say to enable the picture-based layout and both photo-mosaic options so the software uses the image engine and picture imagery. These names apply to the documented Legoaizer interface; check the current Brickaizer interface for equivalent controls.

Build a custom library from your own parts
If the supplied pictures do not represent the pieces you plan to use, the tutorial describes making a custom library. Consistent cropping matters because the software infers part dimensions from each image’s pixel dimensions.
- Photograph the bricks or plates you intend to use, keeping the images clear and consistently framed.
- Crop each image to 60 pixels per stud. For example, use 60×60 pixels for a 1×1 piece and 120×60 pixels for a 2×1 piece.
- Save the images as BMP files.
- Name each file with the color name, an underscore, and any note that should be discarded. The tutorial says the underscore separates the color name from the note.
- Load the custom images into the picture-based workflow and check that the inferred part dimensions and colors match your actual inventory.
These preparation steps come from the APP Helmond picture-mosaic tutorial; confirm the supported file handling and controls in the current release before relying on a legacy-interface detail.

Set the mosaic size, crop, and palette
APP Helmond’s Functions help documents controls for horizontal and vertical stud dimensions, automatic vertical sizing to preserve the source image’s aspect ratio, automatic cropping, color matching, transparency, and filters. These choices affect both the look of the preview and the build: a crop may remove parts of the original image, while changing the grid dimensions changes the number of pieces and the amount of visible detail.
- Choose dimensions: Set the horizontal and vertical stud counts, or use automatic vertical sizing when you want the source proportions preserved.
- Check cropping: Use automatic cropping only if trimming the source to fit the chosen grid is acceptable.
- Review color mapping: Matching depends on the colors and parts available in the selected palette or picture library.
- Consider transparency and filters: These can affect how the source is interpreted and displayed; inspect the output before ordering or sorting parts.
Export a design or a build plan
The documented output formats are PNG, JPG, and BMP. The help also describes spreadsheet output listing piece quantities, costs, positions, and orientations, provided an Excel-compatible reader is available. Treat these as documented product capabilities, not a guarantee that a specific current version or license exposes every output in the same way.

Before building, compare the exported part list with your inventory and the selected palette. A generated color match is a design suggestion; it does not ensure that you own the corresponding pieces or that a particular listing uses the same part or color.

Brickaizer is software for planning mosaics and exporting designs; LEGO Mosaic Maker 40179 is a separate physical kit with LEGO’s own image-to-grid process. They serve different needs rather than acting as interchangeable versions of one product.

See the respective documentation for LEGO Mosaic Maker 40179 and BrickLink Studio’s Mosaic tool. For a custom build, compatible 1×1 plates or tiles and a suitable baseplate are a practical parts route, but check the generated dimensions, palette, and quantities against the specific parts you can obtain.
Check platform and licensing before installing
APP Helmond describes Brickaizer as standalone Windows software and says Windows 7 and later are supported. Its product page advises macOS users to verify their Windows-under-macOS setup before purchase. The vendor describes a free grace period followed by restrictions on some professional features; its interface help says a license is required for output after a 15-day freeware period. Confirm the current version, operating-system requirements, output restrictions, and licensing terms on the product page and interface help before relying on them, since these details can change.
