You can create a handwritten-looking signature with a laptop trackpad, but the steps depend on whether you are signing a PDF or a Word document. On a Mac, Preview can capture a signature directly from the trackpad. For PDFs on other laptops, Adobe Acrobat Reader offers draw, type, or image options. In Word, use inking if your version supports it, or insert a picture of your signature.
Sign a PDF on a Mac using the trackpad
Preview has a built-in trackpad signing tool. Apple also supports capturing a signature with a Mac’s built-in camera or, when Continuity requirements are met, a nearby iPhone or iPad. See Apple’s Preview for Mac instructions.
- Open the PDF in Preview.
- Show the Markup toolbar if it is hidden, then select Sign.
- Choose Trackpad and follow the on-screen prompt.
- Write your signature on the trackpad with a finger. Press any key, then select Done. If the result is not right, choose Clear and try again.
- Select the saved signature, drag it to the right place in the PDF, and resize it using the handles.
If your Mac has a Force Touch trackpad, Apple says pressing more firmly can make the line heavier and darker. The camera and iPhone or iPad capture choices are alternatives if drawing on the trackpad is difficult.
Sign a PDF on another laptop with Acrobat Reader
Acrobat Reader lets you draw a signature with the touchpad, type one, or use an image. Adobe’s workflow adds the signature to the PDF; it is an appearance-based signing method, not necessarily a certificate-based digital signature. For the steps and current interface, see Adobe’s guide to signing PDFs.
#1 Best Overall
- Magic Trackpad is wireless and rechargeable, and it includes the full range of Multi-Touch gestures and Force Touch technology.
- Sensors underneath the trackpad surface detect subtle differences in the amount of pressure you apply, bringing more functionality to your fingertips and enabling a deeper connection to your content.
- It features a large edge-to-edge glass surface area, making scrolling and swiping through your favourite content more productive and comfortable than ever.
- Magic Trackpad pairs automatically with your Mac, so you can get to work straightaway.
- The rechargeable battery will power it for about a month or more between charges.
- Open the PDF in Acrobat Reader.
- Select the Sign icon, or go to Tools > Fill & Sign.
- Choose the option to add a signature, then select Draw, Type, or Image.
- Apply the signature and place it where it belongs in the document.
- Save the PDF. Adobe says the signature and any added text become part of the saved PDF, and saved signatures can be reused.
Do not assume that a visible signature graphic provides certificate-based digital signing. If a recipient requires that, check the document’s certificate or signature panel and follow the recipient’s requirements.
Add a signature to a Word document
Word offers two practical routes: insert a picture of a handwritten signature, or use inking if your installation provides the needed drawing tools. Microsoft describes both signature-image and Signature Line workflows; available inking features can vary by device and software version. See Microsoft’s Word signature guidance and Office inking guidance.

- MULTI-TOUCH GESTURES: Wireless trackpad offers multi-touch control with up to four finger gestures and built-in left and right mouse buttons
- DUAL DEVICE CONTROL: Connects two devices at a time via Bluetooth; press the mode switch button to jump between the two devices
- SLIM DESIGN: Slim portable design with colored indicator lights for enhanced functionality
- RECHARGEABLE BATTERY: USB-C port for recharging the lithium battery
- DEVICE COMPATIBILITY: Compatible with Windows OS; not compatible with macOS, Chrome OS, or Linux
Option 1: Insert a picture of your signature
- Sign your name on plain paper, then photograph or scan it.
- In Word, insert the image using Insert > Pictures.
- Crop the picture to remove excess paper and position it in the document.
This is a useful fallback when the Draw tab is missing or the trackpad makes handwriting awkward. It also avoids trying to create a smooth signature with a small touchpad.
Option 2: Draw with Office inking
If your version of Word has a Draw tab and inking tools, choose a pen and draw on the document using the trackpad. Adobe describes this as a Word option with a trackpad or mouse, while noting that a touch-enabled device or stylus works best. The availability and feel of these tools depend on the device and Word version; see Adobe’s guide to signing a Word document.

Option 3: Add a Signature Line
Use Word’s Signature Line command when the document needs a designated place for someone to sign. A signature line is a document element; it is different from drawing a handwritten-looking mark with the trackpad.

- PDF on a Mac: Preview captures a signature directly on the trackpad and lets you position and resize it.
- PDF on another laptop: Acrobat Reader provides draw, type, and image choices, including reuse of saved signatures.
- Word file: Use the Draw tools if they are available and comfortable, or insert a cropped signature image. Use a Signature Line when you need a designated signing area.
These methods address how to add a signature’s visible appearance. Whether a particular method meets a legal, workplace, or institutional requirement depends on what the recipient accepts.
