Do not use a carrier’s display name—or a tracking number’s shape—as the sole identifier in a tracking integration. Store carrier identity and tracking number separately, prefer the API’s documented carrier code or enum, and treat number-format matching as a way to generate candidates. If formats overlap or the carrier is unknown, preserve that uncertainty and ask for context rather than silently choosing.
Why a carrier name is not a reliable key
A tracking number identifies a shipment within a carrier’s tracking system. It is not, by itself, a globally unique carrier identifier. API schemas reflect this distinction: PayPal’s tracker object has separate required tracking_number and carrier fields, while Amazon Seller Central shipment data separates carrier code, carrier name, and tracking number. See PayPal’s tracker definition and Amazon Seller Central’s shipment guidance.
A carrier name is useful for display, but it may not be a stable or unique machine identifier. Prefer a documented code or enum for the integration’s carrier field, and keep a display name separately. Where the API requires country or other context, include it rather than assuming the name alone resolves the carrier.
What tracking-number shape can—and cannot—tell you
Number shape can help identify possible carriers, but it cannot always identify one uniquely. A multi-carrier API reference documents overlapping plain-numeric formats and returns multiple candidates for an ambiguous number. It also describes using a carrier or country hint to narrow the result. That is an example of one vendor’s behavior, not a universal carrier-format standard: ShipShim’s carrier-detection reference.

- Larger battery enables longer continuous usage and twice the stand-by time. With the unique battery indicator light showing the remaining battery level, no more Low Battery Anxiety.
- The curved handle is extended and widened. With specially designed smooth and flat trigger for a better grip.
- The orange anti shock silicone protective cover can prevent scratches and friction even when dropped from up to 6.56 feet. IP54 technology protects the wireless barcode scanner from dust.
- Plug and play with the USB receiver or the USB cable, no driver installation needed. Easy and quick to set up. Wireless transmission distance reaches up to 328 ft. in barrier free environment.
- Supports almost all 1D Barcodes: Febraban Bank Code, Codabar, Code 11, Code93, MSI, Code 128, EAN-128, Code 39, EAN-8, EAN-13, UPC-A, ISBN, Industrial 25, Interleaved 25, Standard 25, Matrix. Reads damaged, fuzzy, reflective and smudged barcodes.
Consequently, avoid treating a list of patterns or a regular expression as an authoritative global catalog. The available documentation does not establish a complete, definitive set of current formats for every carrier, nor a universal rule for inferring a carrier from a number alone.
Design the integration around separate fields
Keep the tracking number and carrier identity distinct
Represent the tracking number and carrier as separate values in your data model and API request. Use the stable carrier code or enum documented by the receiving API; retain a human-readable carrier name for display where appropriate. PayPal’s tracker schema also defines a separate carrier_name_other field for the OTHER case, rather than asking clients to invent an enum value. See the PayPal tracker definition.

Use carrier and country context when known
If checkout, order, or upstream shipment data supplies a carrier, use that information as the primary selection rather than overriding it based on number shape. Use country context when the API distinguishes global and country-specific carrier entries. PayPal’s carrier guidance says to choose the appropriate global or country-specific carrier for the shipment’s country and to use OTHER with the carrier name when the carrier is not listed: PayPal Add Tracking API carrier guidance.
Handle unsupported carriers explicitly
Follow the target API’s documented fallback. For PayPal, that means the supported OTHER value and its designated carrier-name field—not an improvised carrier code. Other APIs may reject unsupported carriers or provide a different fallback, so implement the behavior their schema documents.
Quick Recap
Best Value

What to do when a number is pasted without a carrier
- Normalize conservatively. Apply only transformations the receiving API or carrier documentation supports. Do not discard characters or rewrite the number merely to make it match a pattern.
- Generate candidates from shape. Use format matching as a candidate-generation step, not a declaration that a carrier has been identified.
- Resolve with context. If there is more than one candidate, use a known carrier or country hint when available. If the result remains ambiguous, return or store the candidate set and ask the caller or user to choose.
- Validate separately. Check whether the number is acceptable for the selected carrier, but do not silently replace the caller’s carrier choice because a pattern points elsewhere. A mismatch may indicate a typo, an unsupported format, or an incorrect carrier selection.
- Preserve the outcome. Represent a single match, multiple matches, and no match as distinct states. Do not turn an uncertain result into a confident carrier assignment in downstream tracking or user-facing messages.
Choose an identification approach based on the input
| Approach | Input certainty | Ambiguity behavior | Context and fallback | Source of truth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Use carrier supplied by an order or user | Carrier is provided, though it may still need validation | Do not replace it silently if the number’s shape conflicts | Use country context and the target API’s unsupported-carrier behavior | Order or user data plus the receiving API’s documented carrier codes |
| Infer candidates from number shape | Carrier is not known; only the number is available | Must accommodate one, multiple, and zero matches | Use carrier or country hints; expose unresolved ambiguity | A format database or matching API; coverage and accuracy depend on that source |
| Use a carrier’s own tracking documentation | Carrier is known or selected | Can validate against that carrier’s documented expectations, but does not resolve an unknown carrier by itself | Follow the carrier’s regional and service-specific guidance | The carrier’s own documentation |
Practical rules for a robust implementation
- Use a stable API carrier code or enum as the machine-facing identity; do not use a display name as a database key.
- Store country or other required context alongside the carrier selection when the API uses it to distinguish entries.
- Keep number-shape validation separate from carrier selection and preserve user-provided values unless the API’s documented rules require a change.
- Make ambiguous and unsupported outcomes visible to the caller instead of selecting the most likely candidate without consent.
- Use a documented fallback such as PayPal’s
OTHERonly where the target API supports it.
