A browser such as Playwright can open each public pricing page, wait for it to render, and save a timestamped full-page or regional image. The image preserves what visitors saw at that moment. It does not, by itself, prove that you identified the right plan, normalized the currency, matched an equivalent offer, or detected the actual commercial reason for a visual change.
A defensible system therefore combines stable browser capture with metadata, review rules, and—when needed—separate price extraction and offer matching.
What an automated screenshot can—and cannot—establish
A screenshot is visual evidence of a page state at a particular time. It can show a displayed monthly price, a crossed-out annual price, a promotion banner, plan names, availability text, or a changed layout. A full-page capture also preserves content below the fold; an element capture can isolate the pricing table or one plan card.
It cannot independently establish that the number is the correct price for your comparison. Location, tax, currency, logged-in status, cookies, promotion eligibility, product identity, and availability may change what appears. A visual diff can tell you that pixels changed, not whether the underlying price increased, a product was renamed, or a rotating testimonial moved.
Define the monitoring record before writing code
Choose the exact offer
Record the competitor URL, plan name, billing interval, currency, region, and whether the offer is for new customers, existing customers, or a particular business size. If a page contains several products, define the CSS selector or page region that matters.

Set a capture schedule
Use a cadence that matches the decision you are making. A weekly capture may be enough for a slowly changing public plan page; a daily run is more appropriate when you need an audit trail for promotions. Keep the schedule, timezone, and run identifier with every image.
Retain context
Store the URL, capture timestamp in UTC, browser and version, viewport, device scale factor, locale, timezone, response status, and any selector used. Save the original image rather than only a compressed thumbnail. These details make later comparisons explainable.
Build the workflow with Playwright
Playwright’s Page API supports navigation and screenshot output. The following Node.js script captures a stable, full-page image and a focused pricing-region image. It waits for network activity to settle, then adds a short delay for client-side rendering.

await browser.close();Replace the selector with one verified in the target page. If no stable selector exists, capture the full page and document that limitation. Playwright also supports screenshot scale and output settings; choose them once and keep them unchanged.
Make rendering comparable
Visual comparisons are sensitive to operating-system fonts, browser version, hardware, headless mode, viewport, device scale, locale, timezone, animation, and dynamic content. Pin your Playwright and browser versions, run on the same image or host, use a fixed viewport, and disable or wait out animations where practical. A change in the capture environment can create a diff even when the competitor’s price did not change.

Capture only after the relevant content exists
For a client-rendered table, wait for a selector rather than relying only on page load:

Playwright Test can compare a current screenshot with a stored reference. Use a stable reference environment and a review threshold appropriate to the page. Dynamic timestamps, rotating testimonials, ads, and personalized recommendations should be masked or excluded; otherwise they produce noisy alerts.
When a diff appears, inspect the before and after images and record the cause. A price conclusion should include the visible plan, currency, billing interval, region, and offer conditions—not merely “the image changed.” If you need machine-readable prices, add a separate parser that extracts text or structured data and validate it against the screenshot. Keep the image as the evidence trail.
Operational safeguards
Respect access controls
Technical ability does not establish permission to automate a site. Check the site’s terms, robots guidance, authentication requirements, rate limits, and applicable law. Use the lowest practical frequency, identify your internal owner, and stop when the site blocks automation.

Handle geography and personalization
Prices may differ by country, currency, tax treatment, experiment cohort, cookie state, or login. Run separate, explicitly labelled contexts for each region or account state. Never merge them into one time series.

Keep an audit trail
Use a predictable path such as competitor/plan/2026-09-29T00-00-00Z.png and a manifest containing the capture settings and outcome. Hashing files can help prove that an image was not altered after collection, but it does not prove that the displayed offer was valid for every visitor.

Troubleshooting
The capture is blank or incomplete
Wait for the specific pricing selector, scroll if the site lazy-loads content, and allow a short post-render delay. Save the HTTP status and a diagnostic screenshot. Do not interpret an incomplete page as a price change.
Every run produces a diff
Pin the browser and host, fix viewport and locale, disable animations, and mask rotating or personalized regions. Compare the focused pricing element as well as the full page.

Stop retrying aggressively. Lower the frequency, review permission and rate limits, and mark the run as blocked. A blocked capture is not evidence of a price.
Prices appear in different currencies
Separate captures by geography and currency. Store the displayed currency and tax wording; do not convert values without a documented exchange-rate policy.

The page changed but the offer did not
Inspect plan text, billing interval, and promotion conditions. Layout, testimonials, scripts, or navigation can change independently of commercial pricing.

Can screenshots prove a competitor raised its price?
They can document that a different number appeared under stated capture conditions. Confirmation still requires checking the same plan, interval, currency, region, taxes, and promotion terms.
Should I monitor the whole page or only the price card?
Use both when practical: the focused element reduces visual noise, while the full page preserves surrounding terms and context.
Is a hosted screenshot service a price-intelligence system?
Not automatically. Verify whether it extracts, normalizes, matches, and validates offers; otherwise treat it as the visual evidence layer.
