Open Visual Traceroute is a free, open-source Java desktop app that traces the network hops between your computer and a destination, then plots them on a 3D world map. It can help you inspect hop-by-hop latency and DNS information, but its map is an approximate visualization—not proof of the physical path your traffic takes.
What Open Visual Traceroute shows
Traceroute identifies responding network hops between your device and a target server and measures round-trip delay to those hops. Open Visual Traceroute presents that route on a geographic 3D map alongside a hop table. The project describes the map as showing the path data takes from your computer to the target server; its GitHub project provides the application and source code: Open Visual Traceroute on GitHub.
Features documented in project history include hop latency, DNS lookup information, route distance, country flags, route replay, and synchronized map and table views. The map is useful for a quick visual overview; the table supplies the per-hop details that are easier to inspect closely.
How to interpret the route and latency
Each plotted point represents a responding hop as reported by traceroute. Its apparent location is based on IP geolocation, which is an estimate; it does not establish the router’s exact physical location or the precise cable route taken by packets. Route distance is likewise a visualization derived from those estimated points, not a measurement of network cable length.
#1 Best Overall
- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Use the display to look for unusually high round-trip delays, hops that do not respond, or differences between runs. A missing response does not by itself show that traffic is broken: routers or networks may decline to answer traceroute probes while forwarding other traffic. Delay can also vary between measurements.
- Trace the destination you are investigating and note which hop first shows an unexpected delay or stops responding.
- Repeat the trace to see whether the pattern persists or changes between runs.
- Compare the visual result with a command-line traceroute or a network monitoring service before treating it as evidence of a persistent fault.
Java and graphics requirements
The project README lists Java versions 11 through 17 and tested systems including 64-bit Windows 11, Ubuntu 20.04, and OpenSUSE Leap 15.3. These are the environments documented by the project, not a guarantee for every operating-system release or Java configuration. - 【Five Gigabit Ports】1 Gigabit WAN Port plus 2 Gigabit WAN/LAN Ports plus 2 Gigabit LAN Port. Up to 3 WAN ports optimize bandwidth usage through one device.
- 【One USB WAN Port】Mobile broadband via 4G/3G modem is supported for WAN backup by connecting to the USB port. For complete list of compatible 4G/3G modems, please visit TP-Link website.
- 【Abundant Security Features】Advanced firewall policies, DoS defense, IP/MAC/URL filtering, speed test and more security functions protect your network and data.
- 【Highly Secure VPN】Supports up to 20× LAN-to-LAN IPsec, 16× OpenVPN, 16× L2TP, and 16× PPTP VPN connections.
- Security - SPI Firewall, VPN Pass through, FTP/H.323/PPTP/SIP/IPsec ALG, DoS Defence, Ping of Death and Local Management. Standards and Protocols IEEE 802.3, 802.3u, 802.3ab, IEEE 802.3x, IEEE 802.1q
The 3D view has a separate graphics dependency. The README warns: “Systems that don’t have a graphic card/drivers that supports required OpenGL features will not be able to use the 3D map.” If the map does not appear or render correctly, check that your graphics hardware and drivers support the required OpenGL features. Traceroute results may still be more useful in the table or a command-line tool if the 3D visualization is unavailable.
What changed in version 2.0.0
Earlier releases included packet sniffing and Whois features. The version 2.0.0 README says the sniffer features were deprecated as the project refocused on visual traceroute. Do not assume the current application is a general packet analyzer; its central use is visualizing traceroute results.

When this tool is a good fit
- Use it for a one-off desktop view of the route from your own computer to a destination.
- Use another diagnostic or monitoring approach when you need recurring measurements, alerts, remote probe locations, or a persistent record over time.
- Prefer command-line traceroute or other diagnostic tools when raw protocol controls, export, or detailed reporting matter more than a geographic overview.
