To check a GST refund, open the GST Portal and go to Services > Refunds > Track Application Status. Choose the filing year or enter your Application Reference Number (ARN), then select SEARCH. You can also track an application without signing in through Services > Track Application Status > Refund by entering the ARN. Use the Public Financial Management System (PFMS) separately when the GST Portal shows that the claim has moved toward payment and you need to check bank-account validation or disbursement.

This guide explains both GST Portal routes, how to find an ARN receipt, what RFD-06 outcomes mean, why an approved refund may not yet be credited, and which system answers each part of the “where is my refund?” question.

What do I need before checking a GST refund?

The most useful item is the refund application’s Application Reference Number (ARN). GSTN generates the ARN after the refund application is submitted and sends the receipt to the registered email address and mobile number. Keep that message or the downloaded receipt available before you start.

You may also need to know the filing year if you use the logged-in tracking page. The tracking record can display the tax period, GSTIN, transmission date and time, and the status of the RFD-06 refund order. These details help you confirm that the record belongs to the correct claim when more than one refund has been filed.

  • ARN: the primary lookup reference for a submitted refund application.
  • Filing year: an alternative input offered on the logged-in tracking page.
  • Registered email and mobile: the channels GSTN uses to send the ARN receipt.
  • GSTIN and tax period: details to verify after the record opens.

How do I check GST refund status after logging in?

The logged-in route gives you the account-specific tracking page and lets you search by filing year or ARN.

  1. Open the GST Portal and sign in with the taxpayer account associated with the refund application.
  2. From the main menu, select Services.
  3. Choose Refunds, then select Track Application Status.
  4. On the tracking page, either select the relevant Filing Year or enter the application’s ARN.
  5. Click SEARCH.

When the result appears, check the GSTIN and tax period first. If the record is the expected claim, review the displayed stage, transmission date and time, and any RFD-06 order information. If you have several applications, repeat the search with each ARN rather than assuming that the newest record is the one you need.

Can I track a GST refund without logging in?

Yes. GSTN documents a pre-login option that searches by ARN. It is useful when you need to confirm the stage of a submitted application but do not want to open an authenticated taxpayer session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the GST Portal.
  2. Select Services from the public menu.
  3. Choose Track Application Status.
  4. Select Refund as the application type.
  5. Enter the refund application’s ARN.
  6. Submit the search.

The pre-login result presents completed stages in green and pending stages in grey, according to GSTN’s functionality note. Use the ARN exactly as shown on the receipt. The pre-login route is ARN-based; it does not provide the logged-in page’s filing-year alternative.

What is the difference between the logged-in and pre-login routes?

Both routes are for tracking the GST refund application, but they differ in how you identify the claim and how much account context is available.

Route Login required Search input Best use
GST Portal refund tracking Yes Filing year or ARN Reviewing a refund from the taxpayer account and checking the associated record details
Track Application Status (pre-login) No ARN Quickly checking the submitted application’s stage with the reference number
PFMS Separate government payment-status service Payment and bank-validation information Checking whether the bank account has been validated and whether a sanctioned amount has been disbursed

The two GST Portal routes are alternatives for the application-processing view. PFMS is not a replacement for either route: it addresses the payment stage after the refund order has progressed toward disbursement.

Where do I find my ARN and ARN receipt?

GSTN says the ARN is generated after submission and the receipt is sent to the registered email address and mobile number. Search those messages for the refund submission confirmation and copy the ARN without changing its characters.

If you are signed in and need the official record again, open Services > Refunds > My Saved/Filed Applications. Locate the relevant application and select its ARN hyperlink to download the ARN receipt. Save the downloaded file with the tax period or filing year in its filename so that you can distinguish it from later refund applications.

The receipt is useful when the tracking page does not immediately identify the claim you expect. It also provides a fixed reference for communicating about that application, rather than relying only on a descriptive label such as “export refund” or “input tax credit refund.”

How should I read the GST refund tracking result?

Start with the identity fields, then read the stage and the RFD-06 result. The page can show the tax period, GSTIN, transmission date and time, and the status of the refund order in RFD-06.

Completed and pending stages

On the pre-login tracker, a green stage is shown as completed and a grey stage is pending. A grey stage means the workflow has not been marked complete in the tracking view; it is not, by itself, a rejection. Read the named stage and any order status alongside the colour.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Refund Sanctioned in RFD-06”

This status means the refund order has sanctioned the claim in RFD-06. It answers the application-order question, but it does not by itself confirm that the money has reached the bank account. For the payment result, use PFMS to check validation and disbursement.

“Refund Partially Sanctioned in RFD-06”

A partially sanctioned result means the RFD-06 order sanctioned only part of the claimed refund. Treat the sanctioned amount and the payment stage as separate matters: the order outcome is visible on the GST Portal, while bank validation and disbursement are checked through PFMS.

“RFD-06 issued, Refund rejected”

This status indicates that an RFD-06 order was issued with the refund rejected. Keep the RFD-06 record and ARN receipt for your files, because they identify the application and the order outcome. The tracker’s rejection wording should not be read as a payment delay; it is an adverse order status for that application.

Why does the GST Portal show a sanctioned refund but the money is not credited?

The GST Portal tracks application processing and the refund order. PFMS handles the bank-account validation and disbursement part of the workflow. Therefore, a sanctioned RFD-06 result can appear before the final credit is reflected in the bank account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Note the ARN and confirm the GST Portal result is the expected application.
  2. Check whether the status indicates that the claim has moved toward payment or disbursement.
  3. Open PFMS separately and review the bank-account validation and disbursement status for the refund.
  4. Compare the PFMS result with the GST Portal’s sanctioned or partially sanctioned outcome.

These systems answer different questions. The GST Portal tells you where the refund application is in processing and what the RFD-06 order says. PFMS tells you whether the account passed validation and whether the sanctioned amount was disbursed. Checking only one system can therefore leave the status picture incomplete.

What should I do if the ARN search does not show my application?

First, verify that you copied the ARN from the GSTN receipt and selected Refund on the pre-login tracker. If you are using the logged-in route, try the filing year shown on the application record or use the ARN instead.

  • Check for a transposed character, missing character, or extra space in the ARN.
  • Confirm that you are searching the refund application, not a different GST service.
  • If you have multiple claims, compare the tax period and GSTIN shown in the result.
  • Use Services > Refunds > My Saved/Filed Applications to confirm that the application and ARN receipt exist in the account.
  • If the application still cannot be located, retain the receipt and the submission messages before seeking assistance through the GSTN support channels.

Do not substitute an invoice number, payment reference, or a bank transaction number for the ARN. The GST refund tracker is designed around the application reference.

What if the result is pending or grey?

A pending or grey stage means that stage has not been shown as completed in the tracker. Record the exact stage name, the ARN, and the date and time you checked. Then check again through the same route or the other GST Portal route to rule out a search or session-specific issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single universal processing-time figure in GSTN’s tracking instructions. The official material explains navigation and status meanings rather than promising that every refund reaches a particular stage within a fixed number of days. Avoid treating a pending colour as an automatic approval, rejection, or payment confirmation.

How do I use PFMS after GST refund sanction?

Use PFMS when the GST refund workflow has reached the payment side and you need information about the destination bank account or disbursement. GSTN explains that payment order and final disbursement depend on PFMS validation.

  2. Open PFMS through its official service and use the refund-payment tracking option provided there.
  3. Review whether the bank account has been validated.
  4. Check whether the sanctioned amount has been marked as disbursed.
  5. Compare the PFMS result with the amount and outcome shown for the application on the GST Portal.

If PFMS shows validation or disbursement information while the GST Portal still displays an earlier application stage, treat the systems as stage-specific records rather than assuming that one has overwritten the other. Keep screenshots or downloaded records only if your organisation’s record-retention policy permits them, and protect any document containing GSTIN or bank details.

Which records should I save after checking?

For each refund application, retain a compact record that lets you reconstruct the status without searching through old messages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • ARN and downloaded ARN receipt.
  • GSTIN and tax period shown in the tracker.
  • Filing year used for a logged-in search, when applicable.
  • Transmission date and time displayed by the GST Portal.
  • RFD-06 result: sanctioned, partially sanctioned, or rejected.
  • Date on which you checked the GST Portal and PFMS.
  • PFMS bank-validation or disbursement result, when payment tracking was required.

Keep the ARN receipt and any RFD-06 order with the tax-period file. This prevents a later status check from being confused with a different refund application filed for another period.

Common mistakes when checking GST refund status

  • Looking only at the bank account: A bank statement cannot explain whether the application is still being processed or whether the RFD-06 order was partially sanctioned. Start with the GST Portal tracker.
  • Stopping after an RFD-06 sanction: Sanction is an order outcome; PFMS is needed for bank validation and disbursement status.
  • Using the wrong route: The logged-in page supports filing year or ARN, while the pre-login page requires the ARN and the Refund selection.
  • Interpreting grey as rejected: Grey denotes a pending stage in the pre-login display. Read the named stage and RFD-06 outcome.
  • Confusing ARN with another reference: Use the application reference generated after submission, not an invoice, challan, or bank reference.
  • Ignoring the tax period: Verify the tax period and GSTIN before acting on a result, especially when several refunds are open.

Is there an official processing-time guarantee?

The GSTN material supplied for tracking explains where to search and how to interpret statuses, but it does not provide a universal processing-time statistic for every refund type. A pending result therefore cannot be converted into a reliable “credit by” date from the tracker alone.

For a precise status record, note the date and time displayed in the GST Portal, preserve the ARN, and use PFMS once the workflow has moved to bank validation or disbursement. This separates an application-stage question from a payment-stage question without inventing a deadline.

How do I protect GST refund information while checking online?

Use the official GST Portal and PFMS services, and avoid sharing the ARN, GSTIN, login credentials, or bank information in public messages. The pre-login route is convenient because it does not require a login, but the ARN still identifies a specific refund application and should be treated as confidential business information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Download receipts and orders only to a controlled location, sign out of authenticated sessions on shared computers, and verify the tax period and GSTIN before forwarding a status record internally. If a message asks for credentials or payment to “release” a refund, do not enter those details into an unverified page; return to the official portal directly.

Your question Open Input or evidence
Where is my submitted refund application? GST Portal > Services > Refunds > Track Application Status Filing year or ARN
Can I see the application stage without signing in? GST Portal > Services > Track Application Status > Refund ARN
What did the refund order decide? GST Portal tracking result RFD-06 outcome and application details

When in doubt, begin with the GST Portal because it establishes the application and RFD-06 status. Move to PFMS only for the bank-validation and disbursement part of the workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ARN in a GST refund application?

ARN stands for Application Reference Number. GSTN generates it after the refund application is submitted and sends the receipt to the registered email address and mobile number; it is the reference used by the refund tracker.

What is the difference between RFD-06 and the ARN?

The ARN identifies the submitted refund application. RFD-06 is the refund order whose result may show that the claim was sanctioned, partially sanctioned, or rejected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does PFMS show why a GST refund was rejected?

No. Rejection is an RFD-06 application-order outcome shown through the GST refund record. PFMS is used for bank-account validation and disbursement information after the payment stage.

What details prove that I checked the correct refund?

Match the GSTIN and tax period in the result with your records, then verify the ARN. The GST Portal may also show the transmission date and time, which helps distinguish similar applications.

Can I use the filing year on the public, pre-login tracker?

The pre-login refund tracker is ARN-based. The filing-year alternative is documented for the logged-in GST Portal tracking page, so use the ARN when checking without signing in.
