If your TP-Link Wi-Fi 6 router is slower than expected, compare speeds in a few controlled tests before changing settings: test a wired device through the router, test directly through the modem, then test Wi-Fi close to the router. These checks help identify whether the limit is likely the internet service, modem, Ethernet path, router, wireless conditions, or client device. Exact speeds and available settings vary by TP-Link model and hardware revision.
Start with a wired speed test
Connect a computer to the router with Ethernet and run a speed test. Use the same computer and test service for comparisons, and avoid other heavy network traffic during the tests. A wired result helps separate Wi-Fi limitations from problems affecting the whole connection.
Next, connect that computer directly to the modem, bypassing the router, and run the test again. Follow your ISP’s instructions for connecting a device to the modem; some modem setups may require a restart when you change the connected device.
- Direct-to-modem and through-router results are both similarly slow: TP-Link says the issue is likely with the modem or ISP, rather than the router. See TP-Link’s slow-internet troubleshooting guide.
- Direct-to-modem is faster, but wired through the router is slow: investigate the router and its Ethernet path, including the cable between modem and router.
- Wired through the router is normal, but Wi-Fi is slow: focus on the wireless environment, Wi-Fi client, band, and router settings.
If the wired connection is slow, check the modem and Ethernet path
Restart the modem and router in order
If all connections are slow, TP-Link recommends unplugging both the modem and router, waiting two to three minutes, powering the modem back on, waiting for it to reconnect, and then restarting the router. The wait time and sequence are TP-Link’s troubleshooting procedure, not a guarantee of a speed increase. TP-Link support
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Try a known-working modem-to-router cable
Check that the Ethernet cable between the modem and router is firmly connected, then test with a known-working cable. TP-Link recommends Cat6 or higher for best performance. Replacing the cable is useful only if the existing one is faulty or limiting the connection; try a cable you already know works before buying another. TP-Link’s cable guidance
Check the client’s wired link on a very fast plan
If your broadband plan exceeds 1 Gbps but a wired PC test remains below 1 Gbps, the computer’s network adapter and negotiated Ethernet link can be limiting factors. TP-Link’s guidance for faster-than-gigabit service also calls out the direct-to-modem result and Cat6-or-higher cabling. Check the adapter’s supported rate and the negotiated link speed, as well as the speeds supported by the router’s and modem’s Ethernet ports; port capabilities differ by model. - Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
If wired is fine, test Wi-Fi under controlled conditions
Test with the wireless device six to nine feet from the router, with no walls, furniture, or other barriers between them, and keep the device and router at the same horizontal level. This close-range check gives you a useful comparison with the wired result; it does not predict the speed you should get in every room. TP-Link’s suggested Wi-Fi test setup
If close-range Wi-Fi is much slower than wired, compare another Wi-Fi device if possible. A slower result on only one device points toward that device’s Wi-Fi adapter or configuration; slower results on several devices make the router’s wireless settings or local radio conditions more likely areas to investigate. Wi-Fi 6 on the router does not mean every connected device uses Wi-Fi 6 or supports the same wireless capabilities.

Investigate wireless interference and settings
Nearby Wi-Fi networks can interfere with your connection. TP-Link suggests checking the Wi-Fi channel and channel width, with examples of 40 MHz on 2.4 GHz and 80 or 160 MHz on 5 GHz. These are options to investigate, not universal best settings: suitable channels and widths depend on nearby networks and what the exact router model supports. TP-Link’s channel guidance
Router menus and controls vary. Use the settings available for your specific model rather than assuming every TP-Link Wi-Fi 6 router has the same channel options or interface. If a setting change makes performance worse or causes connection problems, restore the previous value before trying another change.

Temporarily test QoS and Parental Controls
TP-Link’s slow-speed guide suggests temporarily disabling QoS and Parental Controls to see whether they contribute to the slowdown, where those features are available. Change one setting at a time, test again, and turn it back on if it does not improve the result. QoS prioritizes selected devices or applications when a network is busy; it cannot add bandwidth to your ISP connection. The controls and their behavior depend on the router model. If the connection remains unstable, check the support page for your exact router model and hardware revision. TP-Link’s download pages distinguish hardware revisions and regions, and firmware may not be interchangeable. Confirm the model, revision, and region before installing anything; follow the instructions on that product’s official support page. For example, TP-Link’s Archer AX6000 download page provides model-specific support information. A different router may have a different page, firmware, or update process. For continuing instability, TP-Link also provides a router connection troubleshooting guide.
