Neither TP-Link nor ASUS is a proven universal winner for router security or ease of use. ASUS says routers launched since 2020 receive at least three years of security updates; the TP-Link sources reviewed do not establish a matching brand-wide commitment. Compare the exact model and hardware revision, its current firmware and support status, included security controls, subscription requirements, interface, and mesh compatibility before choosing.
How long will a TP-Link or ASUS router get security updates?
Update support depends on the model and hardware revision. ASUS’s U.S. Product Security Advisory page states that routers launched since 2020 will receive at least three years of security updates. This is ASUS’s stated baseline, not a guarantee that an unspecified model will receive support indefinitely. Check the router’s launch date, current support status, and latest firmware on its official product or security page.
The TP-Link material cited here does not establish a comparable, brand-wide update-duration commitment. That does not by itself show how long any particular TP-Link router is supported: check the exact model and hardware revision against TP-Link’s current support information.
What the Archer AX55 V4 advisory shows
TP-Link’s security advisory, updated September 3, 2026, identifies two vulnerabilities affecting the Archer AX55 V4 and lists fixed firmware as version 1.2.1 Build 20260527. The advisory says CVE-2026-18167 is a buffer overflow in the EasyMesh module that may permit remote code execution by a LAN attacker when Mesh mode is enabled; TP-Link assigns it CVSS v4.0 7.7 (High). CVE-2026-18330 concerns a hard-coded shared RSA-1024 private key in the web login module that may expose the administrator password from a captured HTTP login session; its score is CVSS v4.0 6.1 (Medium). See TP-Link’s security advisory for the affected revision, firmware, and any applicable guidance.

#1 Best Overall
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
This is evidence about one model and revision, not a measure of TP-Link routers overall. If you own an Archer AX55 V4, compare its installed firmware with the fixed version listed in the advisory and follow TP-Link’s instructions. TP-Link recommends promptly applying available firmware updates or using documented workarounds where provided. ASUS likewise advises that keeping automatic firmware updates enabled can help strengthen security because updates often include patches for newly discovered vulnerabilities; see its router security guidance.
What security features do the brands offer, and do they cost extra?
Both brands describe router-level security and network-checking features, but feature names alone do not establish comparative security effectiveness. Availability can depend on the router model, operating mode, region, app, and subscription.

| Option | What the documentation describes | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| ASUS AiProtection | Router security assessment, malicious-site blocking, Two-Way IPS, infected-device prevention, advertisement blocking, and tracker blocking. ASUS says AiProtection uses Trend Micro cybersecurity solutions. | Availability varies by model. ASUS says AiProtection does not work in Access Point mode and may be incompatible with certain dual-WAN configurations. Check the exact model and intended configuration. |
| TP-Link HomeShield | Network checks and real-time protection. On the Archer BE450, the Network Check screen checks items including firmware version, remote management, response to WAN pings, port forwarding, port triggering, DMZ, and wireless encryption. | TP-Link’s cited Real-Time Protection guide requires Security+, a supported HomeShield router, and the Tether or Deco app to configure the feature. Availability varies by model and region; do not assume every HomeShield feature is included at no extra cost. |
Before treating a feature as included, confirm whether it works in your router or access-point mode, whether it covers the devices you intend to protect, and whether it requires a paid plan in your region. Compare the specific protections you would use rather than assuming similarly named vendor features are equivalent.
Which router is easier to set up and manage?
Official documentation describes app and browser-based management for both brands, but it does not establish which is easier for a typical household. ASUS says firmware can be checked in its Router app or Web GUI. TP-Link’s cited HomeShield flow uses the Tether or Deco mobile app. These workflows do not provide comparative evidence about setup time, accessibility, or user satisfaction, so a brand-wide ease-of-use winner is not supported.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
For a practical comparison, look up the exact router’s app and web interface before buying. Check whether the settings you need—such as firmware updates, guest Wi-Fi, security controls, or device management—are available in the interface you prefer.
Will a TP-Link or ASUS router work with a mesh extender?
Mesh compatibility is model-specific; do not assume that an extender or second router will join a mesh system just because it shares a brand. ASUS says supported range extenders can work as AiMesh nodes, but they cannot serve as the primary AiMesh router. ASUS also advises checking product compatibility and firmware, and compatibility is not universal.

Before buying an extender or second router, verify the exact model, hardware revision, firmware, region, and its intended role in the mesh. For a TP-Link HomeShield feature or mesh setup, check the relevant product documentation for the specific router and app; the cited HomeShield material does not establish universal cross-model mesh compatibility.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between TP-Link and ASUS
- Check support for the exact router. Find the model and hardware revision, then review the manufacturer’s current support and security-advisory information. For ASUS, also check whether the router’s launch date falls within the stated update baseline.
- Match security features to how you will use the router. Confirm which controls are available on that model and whether they work in your intended router or access-point mode.
- Check ongoing costs and regional terms. Verify whether a protection feature needs a subscription and whether the plan is available for your model and region.
- Inspect the interface you will actually use. Compare the app and browser interface for the specific candidates; official feature descriptions alone cannot determine which is easier for you.
- Confirm mesh roles and compatibility. Check whether the candidate supports the extender or satellite you plan to use and whether that device can fill the role you need.
Whichever router you choose, enable automatic firmware updates when available or check the manufacturer’s support page regularly. Use a unique administrator password, and avoid enabling remote management unless you need it.
