For a safer TP-Link home network, use WPA3-Personal when both your router and devices support it; otherwise use WPA2-PSK [AES]. Set unique Wi-Fi and router-admin passwords, turn off WPS and web remote management if you do not need them, and give visitors a separate password-protected guest network. Check firmware for your exact router model and hardware revision before considering a replacement.
Which security setting should I use on a TP-Link router?
Choose the strongest mode supported by both the router and the devices that connect to it. TP-Link recommends WPA2-PSK [AES] or WPA2/WPA3-Personal depending on the model; its WPA3 guide says both the router and client device must support WPA3 for that protection.
| Setting | When to use it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| WPA3-Personal | When the router and every device that needs access support WPA3. | Confirm compatibility for the exact router model and client devices. |
| WPA2-PSK [AES] | When WPA3 is unavailable or a device requires WPA2. | Select AES rather than an obsolete, weaker security option. |
| WPA2/WPA3-Personal mixed mode | When the router offers it and WPA2-only devices need to coexist with WPA3 devices. | Mode names and behavior vary by model; check the router’s available options. |
TP-Link’s Wi-Fi settings guide describes changing wireless security and credentials, but menus differ across product generations and firmware. Use the guide for your model rather than assuming every router has the same labels. TP-Link also says most settings are preconfigured for performance and security, so avoid changing advanced wireless options without a specific reason.
Change the Wi-Fi password and router admin password
The Wi-Fi password controls who can join your wireless network. The administrator password controls access to router settings. They protect different things, so use a distinct, strong password for each and replace any default or reused credentials.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
After changing the Wi-Fi name or password, devices using the old details will disconnect. Reconnect them with the new network credentials. TP-Link’s wireless settings guide covers the setting options; the exact path depends on the router.
Turn off WPS and web remote management if you do not use them
Disable WPS when you do not need its setup convenience
TP-Link recommends disabling WPS as a security precaution. The control and its location are model-dependent, so check the router interface or manual rather than expecting a universal menu path.

Keep web remote management off unless remote administration is necessary
Web remote management makes the router’s administration interface reachable from the internet. If you need it, TP-Link advises using a strong admin password and limiting access where possible, such as to a known IP address. On supported models, TP-Link’s Tether app is an alternative that does not require opening the router to direct internet access. See TP-Link’s remote-management setup guide for model-dependent controls.
Give visitors a separate guest network
A guest network lets visitors connect without sharing your main Wi-Fi credentials. Set a separate network name and password, then choose the strongest security mode the router offers. Guest-network controls and isolation options vary by model, so do not assume that every guest network provides the same separation from your home devices.

TP-Link’s general guest-network guide and its Archer A9 V6 instructions illustrate how available modes can differ across generations. Use the instructions for your exact model.
Check firmware and WPA3 support before replacing the router
Look up the router’s exact model and hardware version on TP-Link’s support site, then check for applicable firmware updates and WPA3 support. Some compatible routers can gain WPA3 through a firmware update, so a new router is not automatically required. TP-Link’s WPA3 explainer describes compatibility and firmware support. Install only firmware intended for the exact hardware version and region.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Leave advanced Wi-Fi options alone unless there is a clear problem
Hiding the network name is not a substitute for a strong password and modern security mode; it also means guests must enter the name manually. Unless you are troubleshooting interference or another specific issue, leave channel and channel width at their defaults or automatic settings. TP-Link’s current Wi-Fi settings guidance notes that most settings are preconfigured for typical performance and security.
