A torpedo travels underwater; an anti-ship missile flies through the air toward a surface vessel. The distinction is about how the weapon moves and, typically, what it is meant to attack: torpedoes can be designed for submarines or surface ships, while anti-ship missiles are intended to attack surface ships. Neither category has one universal range, speed, launch method, or guidance system.

What is the core difference?

Comparison Torpedo Anti-ship missile
Travel medium Underwater Through the air
Typical target Submarines or surface ships, depending on the model Surface ships
Launch platform Depends on the model; examples include submarines, surface ships, and aircraft Depends on the model; Harpoon can be launched from surface ships, submarines, shore batteries, or aircraft
Guidance Varies; the MK-48 is described by the Navy as acoustic-homing, with digital guidance and control Varies; Harpoon uses mid-course guidance and a radar seeker

These categories are not perfectly parallel. “Torpedo” describes a weapon that travels underwater, while “anti-ship” describes a target and mission. A missile can even carry a torpedo as its payload.

What targets can each weapon engage?

Torpedoes can be anti-submarine or anti-surface weapons

The role depends on the torpedo. The U.S. Navy describes the heavyweight MK-48 as a submarine-launched weapon for both anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare. By contrast, the lightweight MK-54 is identified as an anti-submarine weapon launched from surface ships and aircraft. The Navy’s FY2025 procurement highlights describe the MK-54 as designed for shallow-water acoustic and environmental conditions while also capable in deep-water engagements. Navy MK-48 fact file; Navy MK-54 fact file; Department of the Navy FY2025 procurement highlights.

Anti-ship missiles are intended for surface vessels

Harpoon is an all-weather, over-the-horizon anti-ship missile system, according to Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR). The Navy’s Harpoon fact file lists several launch platforms, but that does not mean every Harpoon variant can be used from every platform. The platform and configuration depend on the variant. How do launch and guidance differ?

There is no single launch arrangement or guidance method for either category. Compare named systems rather than assuming a capability applies to all torpedoes or missiles.

  • MK-48: Used by submarine classes; the Navy describes it as an acoustic-homing heavyweight torpedo with sonar, digital guidance-and-control, and digital fusing systems. The Navy fact file identifies MOD 7 as the latest version on that page, which was updated on November 15, 2023. Navy MK-48 fact file.
  • MK-54: A lightweight anti-submarine torpedo launched from surface ships and aircraft, according to the Navy. The cited fact file, accessed October 5, 2026, did not display an update date. Navy MK-54 fact file.
  • Harpoon: NAVAIR describes mid-course guidance with a radar seeker; its page also describes active radar guidance and terminal sea-skimming or pop-up maneuvers. The Navy fact file describes a low-level cruise trajectory and active radar guidance. Details can vary by variant. NAVAIR Harpoon description; Navy Harpoon fact file.

Can a missile carry a torpedo?

Yes. The Navy’s Vertical Launch Anti-Submarine Rocket, or VLA/ASROC, illustrates how the terms can describe different stages of one weapon system. It is a surface-ship-launched missile designed to deliver an MK-46 or MK-54 torpedo to a water-entry point near a targeted submarine. The Navy fact file describes a solid-propellant booster and a ballistic trajectory for delivering the torpedo. Its operational transition and status details were published in 2021, so the page supports the delivery concept, not a claim about current inventory. Navy VLA/ASROC fact file.

Why range, speed, and effectiveness cannot be ranked by category

“Torpedo” and “anti-ship missile” each cover different systems, configurations, and operating conditions. The official descriptions cited here do not provide a fair, like-for-like comparison across the two categories. A claim that one is always faster, longer-ranged, cheaper, or more effective would therefore overstate what these sources establish.

For another example of variation within the missile category, NAVAIR describes LRASM as a long-range air-launched anti-surface weapon for high-threat maritime targets. Its program description says the weapon is designed to reduce reliance on ISR platforms, network links, and GPS, and uses semi-autonomous guidance algorithms. Those are NAVAIR program descriptions, not independent comparative test results. NAVAIR LRASM description.
