There is no single benchmark score that captures a PC’s “true power.” Choose a test that matches what you want to measure: 3DMark for gaming graphics and GPU stability checks, PCMark 10 for everyday whole-system activity, Geekbench 7 for cross-platform CPU and GPU compute, or Cinebench 2026 for CPU and GPU rendering. Scores from these different workloads are not interchangeable.

Which benchmark fits your goal?

Start with the work you want to evaluate, not a universal ranking. A score is meaningful only in the context of its specific benchmark, test, hardware, and settings.

Tool Best fit What it tests or provides Key limitation
UL Solutions 3DMark Gaming graphics and GPU stability checks Graphics tests for different GPU classes; score comparisons and game-performance estimates; charts for CPU/GPU temperature, clock speed, and frame rate; looping stress tests. Pick a test that matches your hardware and intended workload. A stress-test failure is a reason to investigate, not proof that a particular part is defective.
UL Solutions PCMark 10 Everyday whole-system performance Activities such as web browsing, video chat, writing, spreadsheets, editing, and gaming. A broad system score does not replace a targeted GPU or rendering result.
Primate Labs Geekbench 7 Cross-platform CPU/GPU comparisons and general compute CPU single-core and multi-core results, plus GPU compute workloads for machine learning, image processing, and video editing. Listed platforms include Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, and Linux; GPU APIs include OpenCL, Metal, Vulkan, and CUDA. Results belong to Geekbench’s workload and version. Cross-platform availability does not make different workloads or versions identical.
Maxon Cinebench 2026 CPU and GPU rendering Rendering performance using Redshift and the same scene file for CPU and GPU tests. Maxon lists support for x86/64 on Windows and macOS, Apple Silicon on macOS, and Arm64 CPUs on Windows. It measures rendering performance, not every gaming or everyday task.

For gaming graphics: 3DMark

3DMark offers different tests for different graphics workloads and GPU classes. For example, Steel Nomad is a demanding non-ray-traced test, Time Spy targets DirectX 12, and CPU Profile samples performance at different thread counts. Check the current product page and each test’s requirements before running it; a demanding test is not automatically suitable for every PC.

For general PC use: PCMark 10

PCMark 10 is the closest fit when you want a broad view of common activities rather than a specialized component result. Its workload includes activities such as browsing, video calls, writing, spreadsheets, editing, and gaming. It should not be used as a stand-in for a focused graphics or rendering benchmark.

For compute across platforms: Geekbench 7

Geekbench 7 provides CPU single-core and multi-core scores and GPU compute tests. Its broad platform and API support can help with comparisons across supported devices, but a fair comparison still requires the same Geekbench version and relevant workload. Do not interpret a CPU score as a GPU result, or either as an all-purpose measure of responsiveness.

For rendering: Cinebench 2026

Cinebench 2026 focuses on CPU and GPU rendering with Redshift. Because it uses the same scene file for both kinds of test, it can help compare rendering performance between those paths. That focus makes it useful for rendering workloads, not a substitute for a game benchmark or an everyday-use suite.

How to get repeatable benchmark results

Background activity, setup work, drivers, and environmental conditions can affect a run. UL Solutions recommends current system updates, approved drivers, closing other programs, and multiple runs. Its more controlled procedure adds a restart and a settling period before testing.

  1. Install critical operating-system updates and the latest approved drivers for the hardware being tested.
  2. Restart the PC, wait for startup activity to finish, and close other programs.
  3. Let the system settle, then run the benchmark with the same test and settings you plan to use for comparison.
  4. For a controlled comparison, keep the PC in the same location and at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and other heat sources.
  5. Repeat the run at least three times. UL recommends discarding the first run in its detailed PC performance guidance because one-time work such as driver initialization, cache generation, or shader compilation may affect it.

UL says its benchmark scores are “usually better than 3%” in precision when repeated on a consistently performing system in a well-controlled environment. That is UL’s qualified statement, not a guarantee for every PC. The methodology page does not state a publication year. UL also notes that multitasking operating systems and systems with inconsistent performance can produce outliers; in those cases, multiple runs and an average or mode can be more informative than a single result.

How to interpret a score

  • Compare the same benchmark and test. A PCMark 10 result, a 3DMark graphics result, and a Cinebench rendering result represent different work; their numbers cannot be compared directly.
  • Match the hardware and conditions. Compare systems with the same or relevant CPU/GPU combination, benchmark version, test, and settings. UL’s 3DMark comparisons can include systems sharing the same CPU/GPU combination.
  • Use a score to answer a defined question. For example, use a graphics test to evaluate gaming-oriented GPU performance, rather than treating its result as a measure of office-app responsiveness.
  • Look for repeatability. If repeated runs vary substantially, background processes or inconsistent system performance may be affecting the result. Use several runs rather than drawing conclusions from one outlier.

Using a GPU stress test to investigate stability

3DMark stress tests repeatedly loop a graphics benchmark. UL says the default 20-loop test takes around 20 minutes; the support page does not state a publication year. Crashes, hangs, or visual artifacts can indicate a reliability or stability issue, while a shutdown caused by overheating may point to a need for more cooling. None of these outcomes identifies a failed component by itself.

Check the test’s requirements before treating a failure as a stability problem. UL cautions that failing a test on hardware that does not meet its requirements is not, on its own, evidence of instability.

Check version, requirements, and license details

Benchmark features, supported hardware, operating systems, versions, and license terms can change. Before installing or following setup instructions, check the publisher’s current page for the version and requirements that apply to your system. The publisher descriptions establish the workload fit and platform support summarized above; they do not provide a consistent basis for comparing current prices across all four tools.

Which tool should you install?

  • Choose 3DMark for a gaming-focused graphics result or a GPU stress test.
  • Choose PCMark 10 for a broad view of routine PC activities.
  • Choose Geekbench 7 for CPU and GPU compute results, especially when cross-platform comparison matters.
  • Choose Cinebench 2026 when CPU or GPU rendering is the workload you need to compare.

One user framed the broader question as “what software should I be using to monitor/benchmark/stress my system?” That combines distinct jobs: benchmarks measure performance under a defined workload, while a stress test checks how a system behaves under sustained load. Select the tool for the job, then compare only results produced under relevant, matching conditions.
